DSMC Chapter 90.1

Attacking Dr. Peng (Part 1)

It wasn’t that Yan Jiyun didn’t want to do the mission to earn points; it was that all these missions were basically sending him to his death. The last time they took a sample, Dr. Peng’s shoulder had almost been bitten off. He was a non-medical person, so how was he supposed to draw blood from animals? What if improper operation caused the animals to bleed to death or get infected?

Dr. Peng seemed to have considered this point. Before he fainted, he said, “Xiao Jiang, don’t be afraid. You did very well just now when you drew the monkey king’s blood. My medical kit will also be a big help.”

Yan Jiyun: “……”

‘Are you kidding me?? Can drawing blood from large animals be done just by reading the manual? It’s not like I’m using home appliances!’

He told himself this was just an instance in a game. It’s not real, not real.

Two seconds before Dr. Peng closed his eyes, Yan Jiyun finally nodded and said, “Okay, no problem. Take good care of your shoulder.”

Only after receiving Yan Jiyun’s affirmative reply did Dr. Peng close his eyes in peace and faint.

The injured Dr. Peng was now in an offline-yet-not-offline state. He wouldn’t die, and the task of protecting him was still marked as “in progress.”

But how was he supposed to send Dr. Peng back to the infirmary now? Running back and forth had almost exhausted him to death. Did he have to carry the man back?

It would be great if he could find a gentle elephant to carry him back, but unfortunately, more than an hour ago Dr. Peng had offended all the elephants in the park to death. There’s no way through there.

Just as he was worrying, a park sightseeing vehicle suddenly appeared on the sightseeing road, its two headlights shining extremely bright.

Two security guards he had never seen before appeared. “Hello, what happened?”

Yan Jiyun thought to himself, as expected of a game, it can automatically push the plot forward. Turns out there are other staff on duty in the zoo besides him.

He polished the story a bit and said, “Dr. Peng was bitten while examining a zebra.”

Security guard: “Alright, Dr. Peng lost a lot of blood. We’ll take him to the infirmary right away.”

The guards seemed to be responsible only for picking people up for treatment and turned a blind eye to the crowd of big and small animals around them. The two brought a stretcher and carried Dr. Peng away, their movements swift and clean, without the slightest hesitation.

Yan Jiyun: “……” He overthinks for nothing. They didn’t need the player’s explanation at all.

He watched the small sightseeing vehicle carrying Dr. Peng away disappear into the dim road, and sighed in his heart. What had he been running himself to death for just now? If he’d beaten Dr. Peng up he could even have hitched a ride back, and wouldn’t have had to collect samples from large animals anymore.

Given the current situation, the monkey king no longer had much use. Yan Jiyun untied the gauze from its limbs. The monkey king looked at him and the big white tiger in terror and backed away, then led its underlings into the woods. This group of monkeys would probably go wreak havoc on other small animals.

Yan Jiyun looked over the task again: black panther, Orange, alpha wolf — the first three were manageable; his relationship with them was already fairly complicated. As for the later gorilla and brown bear, the key point was he didn’t know them either. Of course, this brown bear was definitely not the player he had met at the infirmary entrance.

While he was hesitating, the big white tiger suddenly sprang up beside the zebra and rammed its head into a low tree.

Yan Jiyun: “……”

What was the big white tiger player getting excited about?

Meng Changsheng was of course excited. He had finally received a mission!

His mission was to assist the zookeeper Jiang You in drawing blood samples from large animals.

Yan Jiyun watched the big white tiger player come over to him, only knowing that he was very excited but not guessing the specific reason, though it probably wasn’t that he suspected his identity.

He was worrying about where to find the Soy Sauce the black panther and Orange. He had to get blood samples from these two big guys first.

Where was the black panther?

It didn’t make any sound when it walked; it was very difficult to pinpoint its location.

At this moment, Yan Jiyun thought of his cat teaser wand. In the whole zoo, he was the only one who had this thing. It can be counted as his special identifier in front of leopards and tigers.

Hopefully this thing could lure out the black panther and Orange.

Yan Jiyun threw the ball he had just stuffed into his pocket to the big white tiger. “Go fetch it.”

Meng Changsheng thought the zookeeper might want to play with him, so he chased after the ball and ran off.

After he left, Yan Jiyun took his long cat teaser wand out of the item bar and sat down on a big wooden stump with open ground all around.

With one hand, Yan Jiyun held the instruction manual and tried hard to memorize the blood-drawing procedure and precautions, while with the other he swung the fishing-rod-like cat teaser wand. There was no fish hanging from it, only a bell about the size of a ping-pong ball.

What was he swinging?

Answer: of course, waiting for the willing to take the bait.

Ding ding ding.

Rustle rustle.

Ding ding ding.

Rustle rustle.

From the woods came the sound of bodies pushing through branches and leaves.

Are they coming?

Has a big cat that wants to play with the teaser wand taken the bait?

Yan Jiyun didn’t see any big cat jump out of the woods, but he heard it, and the big white tiger heard it too.

Such loud movement, yet unwilling to show its head. Then it definitely wasn’t Orange and the three Zhu sisters, nor was it the black panther, because the black panther basically never made any sound.

Who could it be?

Who was lying in the small woods, secretly looking over here?

Yan Jiyun already had the answer in his heart and felt a bit worried. He had indeed lured over a big one. This was something he hadn’t expected.

Meng Changsheng belatedly realized it. He had just adapted to being a tiger, and suddenly being made to distinguish among so many scents and subtle sounds was really difficult.

Immediately after, from the east came the sound of grass being lightly stepped on. This time not one, but several. Orange and the three sisters appeared together.

Yan Jiyun almost cried when he saw them. They had come at just the right time.

“Orange, come quickly.” He waved to Orange and the three Zhu sisters, unable not to suspect whether the four of them were born from the same mother. Why were they together everywhere they went? They should all be South China tigers.

Orange didn’t hurry forward, but instead circled around Yan Jiyun, smelling the scent of the big white tiger. They had always stayed in the tiger zone, so Orange had no reason to be wary of the big white tiger. Only after finishing smelling and confirming the other party posed no threat did it walk over to Yan Jiyun at ease.

Yan Jiyun patted the spot beside him on the rock. “Orange, come here.”

Orange hesitated for a moment, but still jumped up.

Seeing that it was quite cooperative, Yan Jiyun reached out to rub its chin. Orange relaxed completely, and only then did he open the medical kit and take out the blood-drawing syringe.

He gently patted Orange’s head. “I’m going to draw some blood from your tail for a test. It might hurt a tiny bit. Can you bear it?”

This time he really was going to touch a tiger’s butt. Yan Jiyun was genuinely afraid it would kick him off the rock with one blow, and if he fell down, he might lose half his life.

Orange flicked its tail, clearly a bit unhappy, but under Yan Jiyun’s soothing, it still cooperated.

Yan Jiyun communicated with it for a bit, and only after it was willing to offer its tail did he start.

Very soon, he successfully drew Orange’s blood. The guidebook seemed to be somewhat useful after all.

[Player has successfully collected the South China tiger’s blood sample (1/6).]

Meng Changsheng was surprised watching from the side. In real-world zoos, drawing blood from a tiger required anesthesia first. Were the tigers here really that easy to coax?

But it was strange. Why didn’t the zookeeper draw his blood?

On second thought, it wasn’t strange that he didn’t draw Meng Changsheng’s blood.

He was a player and not within the scope of “berserk animals.” Drawing his blood would be useless, so the system NPCs would naturally avoid players. Cooperating properly with the zookeeper on the task was the right thing to do.

As for the importance of sticking with the right zookeeper, that was double the happiness.

Yan Jiyun only drew Orange’s blood. Afterward, he talked to it for a while, though it was unknown whether Orange understood.

Strangely, the black panther still hadn’t appeared. There was also a big one in the woods, but it wasn’t the black panther.

“Willing bait” really wasn’t an easy thing.

The black panther had been injured before. Could it be hiding somewhere licking its wounds?

After Dr. Peng had run back to the elephant area alone to get the medical kit, he hadn’t mentioned encountering the black panther either. That meant the black panther had been protecting Dr. Peng in secret, or hadn’t protected him at all. Maybe it had run into other dangerous animals.

But the most dangerous animals in the zoo were tigers and lions, right?

The black panther’s escape speed wasn’t slow either. It shouldn’t have been pinned down by them, and at that time it had also separated from him, this deadweight.

What now? If it didn’t show up, he couldn’t complete the task. He wanted to look for it but didn’t know where to look. He couldn’t possibly turn back into a cat again and call it out by asking for help. But that wasn’t realistic either.

Besides the black panther, he also had to draw blood from a lion, the alpha wolf, and a brown bear.

Where was the wolf now? He had to find it too.

After playing with the cat teaser wand with the three Zhu sisters for a while, Yan Jiyun took them to look for the wolf.

This time he had a bicycle, so going anywhere was convenient. It’s much better than walking.

This mission only needed to be completed before dawn. As for protecting Dr. Peng, that mission was still marked as “in progress.” The man had already gone into the infirmary, so why wasn’t it marked as complete? Did he have to wait until the other party woke up?

Forget it. He’d finish the current mission first. He’d have to go to the infirmary eventually anyway, and could look into it then.

Yan Jiyun took several big guys straight toward the artificial lake, but didn’t find the alpha  wolf. Only two gray wolf corpses were left on the ground, possibly because it wasn’t yet dawn, the system hadn’t recycled the corpses.

So who won between the alpha wolf and the wolf player?

Yan Jiyun pointed at the gray wolf corpses and said to Orange, “Can you find them?”

Orange not only understood him, it also led them running in another direction. Yan Jiyun quickly rode his bicycle to catch up.

In the end, they went two kilometers before finding the alpha wolf and its group. There was an artificial hill cave here, with a pack of gray wolves hiding inside. The leading alpha wolf stared at the group of tigers standing at its cave entrance.

Before they could start fighting, Yan Jiyun came panting out from behind the tigers. It had taken him some time to park the bicycle, so he was a step slower.

Yan Jiyun realized that perhaps because he himself was a cat, the animals seemed to automatically receive what he said, at least able to distinguish goodwill from hostility.

The alpha wolf growled at Orange and the others, thinking they wanted to fight. After Yan Jiyun came out, the alpha wolf became uncertain.

“Don’t fight, don’t fight. Wolf King, I’m here to see you about something.” He had to negotiate properly with the other party.

But the alpha wolf didn’t show any intention of lowering its guard, so Yan Jiyun said again, “Your cub is recovering from its injuries at the infirmary. It’s doing quite well, no big problems.”

After hearing this, the alpha wolf seemed less on guard. Yan Jiyun took the opportunity to ask whether he could draw a tube of blood.

Meng Changsheng thought to himself, ‘The wolf king couldn’t possibly be stupid. Would it really let itself be bled just because the zookeeper casually asked?’

The next second, Meng Changsheng was slapped in the face. The alpha wolf actually lifted its leg for the zookeeper to draw blood!

Jiang You must be the chosen one, right??

Then he must be the protagonist of this instance. Following him was definitely right!

Meng Changsheng praised his own cleverness.
