Even earlier, when Jiang Yuxin had confessed, Fang Zhengwen hadn’t known how to respond—because part of him was worried about Zhou Shuyi.
“Don’t stare at me like that—look at her, alright? I’m bowing out. Wishing you two happiness.”
With that, Zhou Shuyi pinched Fang Zhengwen’s cheeks, forcing him to face Jiang Yuxin. Then he gave his shoulder a firm pat and hurried away from the heavy atmosphere before his emotions could betray him.
Tears blurred his vision, and the world that had been full of color drained into lonely shades of gray.
He sprinted through the familiar classrooms and hallways, ignoring the stares that followed him. Even as his backpack slipped from his shoulder, he didn’t stop running.
“What the hell are you doing? That’s dangerous—don’t run on the stairs!”
Shi Zheyu shouted when Zhou Shuyi nearly crashed into him on the stairway between the second and third floors.
The person walking just behind Shi Zheyu noticed the tears on Zhou Shuyi’s face—and instinctively turned back to chase after him.
“Shide?”
Shi Zheyu, startled by the sudden movement, grabbed his arm. But Gao Shide brushed off the hold, gripping Shi Zheyu’s wrist and pulling free.
“I’ve got something to do. Go to class without me.”
“Gao—”
The hand that had been reaching for him hung helplessly in midair.
Shi Zheyu had quietly watched Gao Shide since their sophomore year, his gaze always drawn to him from afar.
Now, watching that familiar back disappear down the hall, his face showed only a silent, aching sadness.

“Why Zhengwen? Why him and not me? Damn you, Zhengwen… damn you, Yuxin… damn you both! I’ve loved you for so long…”
Sitting alone in the stands, Zhou Shuyi removed the necklace he’d always worn — the lucky charm Jiang Yuxin had given him. Clutching it tightly, he shouted toward the empty pool.
He had once believed that the girl he’d secretly loved for years might one day become his girlfriend — that the two of them could be the kind of couple others envied. But instead, he had witnessed her confessing to Fang Zhengwen with his own eyes.
A first love that ended before it could even begin. His heart shattered, and he’d run from the scene, eventually bursting into the deserted indoor pool.
“Idiots! All of you… idiots!”
Crying, he staggered to his feet and walked toward the pool, then dove in.
Splash—
The sound of water echoed through the empty building, heavy with the scent of chlorine in the humid air. Under here, it was okay to cry.
No matter how many tears he shed, they would all dissolve into the water.
Here, there was no one else— so no one would see how pathetic he looked, no matter how broken he was.
As the strength left his hand, the necklace slipped free and slowly sank to the bottom of the pool…
It was something he had always treasured, removing it only during swim meets and locking it safely away.
But the girl who had given it to him had now found someone more important than him.
Maybe it was time for him, too, to let go— to release these feelings, just as he had released the necklace.
Suddenly, a strong current swept past him.
Startled, he turned—and to his shock, he saw Gao Shide swimming rapidly toward him. With an angry expression, Gao Shide grabbed his arm and tried to haul him up from the bottom of the pool.
Zhou Shuyi was furious. He struggled, trying to kick away, but Gao Shide held firm. The more they fought, the more irritated they both became. Finally, Gao Shide hooked an arm around Zhou Shuyi’s waist and yanked him closer.
In truth, Gao Shide had been chasing after him ever since leaving the piano room. He had seen everything— how Zhou Shuyi recoiled from him in disgust, how Jiang Yuxin confessed to Fang Zhengwen, how Zhou Shuyi’s tears had fallen in silence…
And now— Gao Shide pulled him in with sudden force and crushed their lips together in a fierce kiss.
“…”
“…”
Under the water, one of them widened his eyes in shock, while the other remained calm, kicking off the bottom of the pool. The recoil and buoyancy lifted them both upward— two figures rising together toward the surface.

“Zhou Shuyi, stop being stupid! Are you trying to get yourself killed?”
“You’re the stupid one! Why the hell did you kiss me?”
The moment they climbed out of the pool, still gasping for breath, the two immediately began to argue.
“I called out to you so many times!”
“It’s none of your damn business!”
Zhou Shuyi kept wiping his lips over and over with his arm. His expression and gestures were full of disgust, and Gao Shide frowned at the sight.
“So you really like Yuxin that much? Her confessing to Zhengwen hurts you that badly, huh?”
Gao Shide’s tone was colder than Zhou Shuyi had ever heard before—but those words struck Zhou Shuyi’s ears with a completely different meaning.
“Wait a second… how do you know about that?”
The scene of the confession flashed through his mind. So this guy… had followed him all the way from the piano room. He’d seen everything—the most humiliating moment of his life.
As soon as Zhou Shuyi realized that, anger surged up in him like fire.
“You were spying on me?”
“I was just—”
Gao Shide started to speak, but stopped halfway.
That hesitation only deepened Zhou Shuyi’s misunderstanding. He thought Gao Shide had found out his weakness and was trying to use it—taking ‘revenge’ for those pranks from before.
Zhou Shuyi pointed furiously toward the pool exit and shouted,
“Yeah, fine! Those pranks were my doing, alright? You just needed a funny story to tell people about me, didn’t you? You’ve got your laugh now—are you satisfied? Then get out!”
“It hurts, doesn’t it? You don’t have to pretend to be fine…”
“Get out! Or do you want me to hit you?!”
The hand he’d been pointing with curled into a tight fist.
“…”
Gao Shide looked at the stubborn Zhou Shuyi before him, worry flickering in his eyes, but he said nothing more. He simply turned his back and walked away in silence.
The scent of chlorine lingered in the air. Zhou Shuyi sat down on the cold tiles by the poolside, staring blankly at the turquoise-blue water. His voice trembled faintly as he murmured,
“So much for a ‘lucky charm’… what a joke.”
Zhou Shuyi didn’t know.
He didn’t know that, after he had left, the man who was supposed to have gone home had come back through the opposite entrance—
He didn’t know that Gao Shide had dived into the pool again to retrieve the necklace, and, dripping wet from head to toe, had gone into the swimming club locker room to quietly hang that necklace on the handle of Zhou Shuyi’s locker.
