~The Campus and the Stage

After changing his clothes, Zhou Shuyi wandered aimlessly around campus until, before he knew it, he had arrived at the main hall. The entrance was decorated with balloons, and on a signboard was written the name of the play being performed by the drama club: ‘The Corpse in Love’.

It was an adaptation of ‘Fetish Class’, a novel by the popular Japanese mystery writer Natsuya Sonoko. The story took place in a provincial high school, where mutilated corpses were being found one after another — each missing a different body part. From the victims’ homes, pieces of other victims’ remains were discovered… As the investigation deepened, an eighteen-year-old murder case began to surface — a tragedy born out of paranoia and cruelty among classmates. The murderer had dismembered the bodies to fulfill a twisted sexual desire…

“…Wow, that’s dark,” Zhou Shuyi muttered with a wry smile, reading the bold red title on the signboard.

―――Murphy’s Law, huh. The more you don’t want to see someone, the more likely you are to run into them. The more you want to avoid something, the more it ends up right in front of you…

He had just gone through heartbreak — he wasn’t in the mood for love at all — yet somehow, he’d stumbled upon a play called ‘The Corpse in Love’.

The white balloon clouds decorating the entrance drew his attention. He stepped into the hall and walked up onto the stage, where the drama club members were busy preparing. He sat down in a chair at center stage, watching them rehearse, and murmured with a bitter smile, “It’s not even fair to call it heartbreak…”

He hadn’t even confessed his feelings. He didn’t even have the right to call it love, much less heartbreak.

―――Why Zhengwen?

―――Why not me?

―――What do I lack?

―――Or maybe… I’m just not someone who deserves to be loved at all?

Unanswerable questions swirled endlessly through his head. But one truth was undeniable — Jiang Yuxin liked Fang Zhengwen.

―――Why Zhengwen?

―――Because she just likes him.

―――Why not me?

―――Because I’m not him.

―――What do I lack?

―――No matter how hard I try, the only one who can make Jiang Yuxin’s heart flutter… is still Fang Zhengwen.

―――Maybe I don’t deserve to be loved at all?

―――Then I’ll just have to move on. Let go of these feelings and move forward — toward the person who’s meant for me. Someone who truly loves me, and me alone!

“Excuse me, sir — we’re about to start rehearsal, and I need that chair.”

A girl in a white dress walked up to him and bent slightly in polite apology.

“Oh, sorry! I’ll get out of your way.”

Snapping out of his thoughts, Zhou Shuyi immediately stood and left the stage to its rightful owner. The dark cloud on his face had cleared.

But he didn’t notice — in the corner of the stage, standing quietly and watching him — was the same man who was always chasing after him.

A Few Days Later―

Near the Faculty of Business Administration building, by the lotus pond, Fang Zhengwen noticed Zhou Shuyi sitting alone.

“Shuyi…”

He called out the name, his voice tinged with mixed emotions as he looked at the figure’s back.

Ever since he had witnessed Jiang Yuxin’s confession, Zhou Shuyi had been deliberately avoiding him. He stopped attending their shared classes and skipped meals at the cafeteria. Even when invited through the LINE group, he only left the messages on “read.”

The three of them had gone to the same schools since childhood, and their homes were close to one another. Compared to the lively Jiang Yuxin and Zhou Shuyi, Fang Zhengwen had always been the quiet one. Naturally, he became the caretaker of the other two, cleaning up after their mischief.

In their second year of high school, he realized he had fallen for Jiang Yuxin. But by her first year of university, she already had a boyfriend. So, he buried his feelings and continued playing the role of the kind and considerate ‘little brother’.

Around that same time, he noticed something else: the strong-willed yet lonely Zhou Shuyi liked the same girl he did. And just like him, Shuyi was treated as nothing more than a ‘younger brother’.

That was why Fang Zhengwen understood all too well what it felt like when the person you like falls for someone else. And so he thought—it was time to talk things out properly.

“Zhou Shuyi, there’s something I want to say. You—”

Before Shuyi could even think of escaping, Fang Zhengwen circled around the pond and stood directly in front of him, speaking before Shuyi could even turn toward the voice.

But before their conversation could continue, a girl with a white backpack came running toward them. She clutched a heavy reference book in one hand, panting as she spoke.

“Sorry! My advisor wouldn’t let me leave until I fixed my citations. I’m so sorry for being late.”

At first, Jiang Yuxin only looked at Fang Zhengwen. But as she got closer, she noticed Zhou Shuyi, half hidden in the shade. Naturally, she took Fang Zhengwen’s arm and smiled brightly.

“Oh, Shuyi, you’re here too! Perfect—let’s all go eat together. My treat.”

“…”

It was a simple, unconscious gesture. Yet it made Zhou Shuyi realize once again something he’d tried not to face.

A ‘younger brother’ and a ‘lover’ are not the same.

He had linked arms with Jiang Yuxin before—but never like this. To her, he was just the boy she’d played with since childhood, nothing more. Forcing a smile, he spoke awkwardly.

“I’d just be in the way. You two should go.”

“I still haven’t gotten a reply from Zhengwen,” Jiang Yuxin said. “I don’t know why.”

“You haven’t?”

Zhou Shuyi looked at his childhood friend in surprise.

“I…―” Fang Zhengwen stared back blankly, not sure how to answer.

He had intended to respond to Jiang Yuxin’s confession after clearing things up with Zhou Shuyi first—but her sudden appearance had thrown his plan off completely.

“It’s okay,” she said, smiling as she stood beside him. “I gathered my courage to confess, so I don’t mind waiting a little longer. But…”

Then, pretending to threaten him playfully, she added with a teasing grin: “If you say no, you’d better be ready for the consequences.”

“…”

Watching their sweet, easy banter, Zhou Shuyi suddenly felt like the unwanted extra in the scene.

Then Jiang Yuxin reached out her other hand and took hold of Shuyi’s arm. One hand held her ‘lover’, the other her ‘younger brother’.

“Shuyi, you like spicy food, right? Let’s get some mala hotpot! And sweet-and-tangy suanmeitang too… just thinking about it is making me hungry.”

“But…”

He glanced down at her hand gripping his arm, wondering how to politely excuse himself.

Just then—

“Zhou Shuyi! There you are.” A clear voice cut through the awkward air.

“Come on, let’s grab lunch. You promised, remember? We’ve got lectures again this afternoon.”

Gao Shide reached out, took Zhou Shuyi’s arm, and turned to the other two.

“Sorry, I’m borrowing him for a bit.”

“When did they get so close?”

Watching the two walk off together, Jiang Yuxin blinked in surprise and asked Fang Zhengwen, who stood beside her.

Fang Zhengwen merely shook his head, took the heavy reference book from her hands, and began walking toward the campus gate.

I translate not simply to change words from one language to another, but to build a bridge between stories and the people who are waiting to discover them.
