At that, Gao Shide set down his chopsticks and protested with a hint of jealousy. “Mom, you’re spoiling Shuyi too much. I’m your son, remember?”
“I can’t help it. Shuyi’s just too adorable.”
She shrugged and replied without hesitation, then turned back to Zhou Shuyi with a smile. “Would it be alright if I call you Shuyi-chan?”
“Of course.”
Just a moment ago, he’d been nervous about whether she’d like him or not — but she turned out to be kind, funny, and easy to talk to. He found himself relaxing completely.
“Shuyi-chan!?” Gao Shide’s eyes widened in disbelief as he repeated the nickname. “Shuyi-chan? You’re really okay with that?”
He had only been joking a moment ago, but the jealousy he felt now was real.
Zhou Shuyi hated being called by anything other than his name — not even his boyfriend was allowed to call him anything but ‘Shuyi’.
And yet, in less than thirty minutes since meeting, his mother had already earned the rare privilege of calling him ‘Shuyi-chan’.
“Shut up. Only your mom can call me that. You can’t.”
Meeting Zhou Shuyi’s gaze, Gao Shide’s mother raised an eyebrow proudly and said to her son, “You hear that? It’s my special privilege. You’re not allowed.”
“Unbelievable. Fine, you two eat together. I’m done.” Crossing his arms, he set down his bowl with a sulky look.
“Aw, are you sulking?” The two said it in perfect unison — and burst out laughing.
To tease her son even more, Shide’s mother leaned closer to Zhou Shuyi and playfully pinched his left cheek.
“Oh, don’t mind him. He’s just a big kid. Come on, let’s eat. I just love Shuyi-chan — you’re so cute.”
“I love you too, Auntie.”
“…!” Gao Shide scowled, glaring at the pair who had now teamed up to tease him.
“Alright, alright, don’t pout,” his mother said between chuckles. “Here, I’ll give you some too. Don’t get jealous.”
Still smiling, she picked up another piece of sweet-and-sour pork and placed it into her son’s bowl. Then she spooned a bit of pickled lotus root onto Zhou Shuyi’s rice and looked at the boy tenderly — a boy who had lost his mother at such a young age.
“Shuyi-chan, eat more, okay? I also have some fruit. Oh, and I bought a cake yesterday — we’ll have it together later.”
“Yeah. Thank you, Auntie.”

After Dinner―
After dinner, Zhou Shuyi offered to help wash the dishes.
But his idea of ‘washing dishes’ was simply dipping the greasy plates into the soapy sink for about two seconds, then taking them out and setting them aside to dry.
“You seriously think that’s washing… dishes?”
Seeing what was happening, Gao Shide — who had been wiping the table — rushed into the kitchen. He snatched up the barely cleaned dish, stared at it in disbelief, and put it back into the sink.
“Oh… is that wrong?”
Seeing his innocent expression, Gao Shide couldn’t help but sigh. As expected of the young master of the Shouyi Group. He probably had never done a day of housework in his life — offering to help was just a polite gesture. He clearly had no idea what he was doing.
“Alright. I’ll teach you.”
Smiling affectionately, Gao Shide picked up a sponge and a plate, and began demonstrating step by step how to wash properly. Their fingers brushed together beneath the white foam — both of them smiling — and from the living room, where his mother sat with a plate of fruit, the sight looked like a picture of pure happiness.
“Ma’am, we’ve finished washing the dishes,” Zhou Shuyi called out.
“Mom, I’ve cleared the table too,” Gao Shide added.
Having finished their chores, the two returned to the living room and reported to the mother sitting on the sofa. She patted the spot beside her, inviting Zhou Shuyi to sit down, and handed him a fork with a piece of sliced fruit. “Good work, Shuyi-chan. Have some fruit.”
“Thank you, Auntie.”
“What about me?” Gao Shide protested.
“Go grab a chair,” she said curtly, pointing toward the dining room.
“…”
Completely ignored again, he gave up and sat down on the floor, eating a piece of sliced pear from the table.
His mother smiled faintly, glancing at Zhou Shuyi sitting upright beside her. She gave his shoulder a gentle pat.
“Thank you for everything, Shuyi-chan. But really, you don’t have to go out of your way to help.”
“I just wanted to,” Zhou Shuyi said softly. “Though… I guess I wasn’t much help.”
Every time he tried to do household chores, his lack of experience only made more work for everyone else.
“I’m just so glad,” the mother said with a warm smile, “that the person Shide likes is someone as kind and thoughtful as you.”
“…”
Zhou Shuyi blinked in surprise, then turned toward Gao Shide, who was sitting on the floor. Did you tell her? ― His eyes asked silently. Shide quickly shook his head — I didn’t say a thing. He was just as shocked that his mother already knew.
“You think I wouldn’t notice? I’m his mother.”
She gave her son a knowing glance, then looked back at Zhou Shuyi and laughed softly.
“Ever since he met you back in fifth grade, he wouldn’t stop saying, ‘I want to transfer schools, I want to transfer schools!’ I didn’t understand why at first. But then he insisted on going to the same middle school, then the same high school… and even the same university. That’s when I realized — he just wanted to be wherever you were. Oh, and Shuyi-chan, didn’t you once say you were going to be his father?”
“Ah… yeah.”
Zhou Shuyi smiled, remembering that day long ago.
“See?” she said, laughing. “You only meant to ‘become his father’, but my son ended up chasing after you like a ‘wife’ for more than ten years.”
“Mom!”
Panicking, Shide shouted before she could reveal any more.
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop. He’s scolding me already,” she said, amused.
Zhou Shuyi hesitated for a moment, then asked in a trembling voice — the question that had been weighing on his heart.
“Auntie… do you… not disapprove of our relationship?”
“Of course I don’t.”
Her serious tone made both of them stiffen. But then, she continued gently.
“What I care about is whether you two are truly happy. Whether you cherish each other. Whether you have the strength to protect this bond, no matter what comes. Falling in love with someone — that’s a beautiful thing. But the world sometimes puts ugly labels on even the most beautiful love. If you truly love each other, don’t let anyone else’s opinions matter. Shuyi-chan, you and Shide are both my sons. If the world ever hurts you, you don’t have to hide it from me. A mother protects her sons — until the very end.”

*Translator’s Note: Do keep in mind the ‘Shuyi-chan’ part, Japanese context, since this translation is translated from the Japanese version. And also Zhou Shuyi said he will give himself to him (as a father I guess then) because he first offered his own father to Gao Shide back then, but Shide didn’t want it, so he offered himself instead. Lol. Meow meow~~~ -K
