~Gao Shide’s House
The afternoon sunlight streamed in through the window, and the only sound in the quiet room was the soft rustling of pages being turned.
The two of them sat on the floor near the balcony, each studying their own exam material.
Zhou Shuyi spun a pen between his fingers, sneaking glances at Gao Shide out of the corner of his eye — completely absorbed in his book. It was the first time he’d ever seen that face from this close. And in that moment, he finally understood why, every Valentine’s Day, Shide always received several times more chocolate than he ever did.
“Focus,” came Shide’s calm voice, suddenly breaking the silence.
Zhou Shuyi folded his arms, frowning. “How can you stay so calm?”
―――Damn it!
Was he really the only one whose heart was racing like crazy, completely unable to concentrate?
“What do you mean?”
“Just follow me.”
He stood up, grabbing his notebook and yanking the textbook out of Gao Shide’s hands. Pulling the confused man to his feet, he dragged him to the living room and pushed him down onto the sofa, handing back the book.
“Sit still.”
“Alright.”
Gao Shide didn’t understand Zhou Shuyi’s intention, but he didn’t mind being ordered around either. With a small smile, he sat on the leather sofa. His lover threw a cushion onto his lap and lay down, resting his head on it, stretching out comfortably across the sofa.
“Shuyi?”
“Like this, I can read better,” Zhou Shuyi said, flipping through his notes as if nothing were out of the ordinary.
“The notebook’s upside down.” Gao Shide laughed, tapping the pages lightly with his finger. Shuyi’s lips twisted in embarrassment.
“Don’t you get nervous being around your boyfriend?”
Putting his textbook aside, Gao Shide reached out and held Zhou Shuyi’s hand — his palms faintly sweaty from tension.
“I am nervous,” he admitted softly.
“You? You get nervous too!?”
Feeling his cold fingertips, Zhou Shuyi couldn’t help but smile.
“It’s the first time you’ve come to my house… and the first time we’ve been this close…”
The confident man who once stood tall on the stage was gone. The Gao Shide before him now was trembling — his voice uncertain, his calm facade gone.
“My attitude before… was it really that bad?”
He asked in a low, guilty tone. But Shide’s answer caught him off guard.
“No. I wasn’t much better. I’d say we’re even.”
“Really? What did you do? I don’t remember anything.”
“I was terrible too. Because…”
He grinned mischievously.
“Ever since I met you, you’ve always been the ‘Forever No. 2’.”
That jab hit straight home. Zhou Shuyi shot up from the sofa and threw a light punch at Gao Shide’s chest.
“Ugh! This time, in the graduation exam, I will beat you!”
“You’d better give that up,” Gao Shide said, catching his wrist mid-swing. Bowing his head, he kissed Shuyi’s fingertips, speaking with quiet seriousness.
“I have a reason I can’t lose.”
“What reason?”
“Because only if I win… will you actually see me.”
――—“Are you Gao Shide?”
――—“Yeah.”
――—“Damn it! I’ll remember this!”
He’d learned it back in fifth grade, standing in front of the ranking board.
If he took first place, the boy in second — Zhou Shuyi — would finally notice him.
That’s why he had to win.
When Zhou Shuyi heard that, he couldn’t hold back the proud smile that rose on his face.
To be loved by someone this sincere — it felt like a medal of honor in his life.
There’s a saying, isn’t there? The one who falls in love first is the one who loses.
―――So, Gao Shide — in love, this round’s mine.
“How much do you love me?”
“I love you… I love you so much it hurts. So much I don’t even know what to do anymore.”
Gao Shide took Zhou Shuyi’s fingers in his hand, his cheeks flushed as he confessed the words he’d rehearsed thousands of times in his heart.
“Didn’t you say you hate being pinned down from above?” Gao Shide’s low voice carried a hazy warmth as he pressed his lips close to Shuyi’s ear.
“Did I… say that?” Zhou Shuyi’s body temperature shot up, his face flushed red, but he didn’t want to push Gao Shide away as he leaned in closer.
“But will you let me hold you down, just this once?” Gao Shide wrapped his arms around him, pulling him into his chest. They slowly sank back onto the soft sofa, lips about to meet when—
The front door, which had been locked, suddenly opened. A familiar voice rang out.
“I’m home!”
“—!”
The two froze, leaping apart at once and straightening their clothes in a panic. Gao Shide grabbed the fallen textbook from the floor, opened it to a bookmarked page, and pretended to read.
“Mom! Welcome home!”
He called out in an exaggerated tone toward the woman standing by the door — his cheeks and ears still flushed red.
“H-hello, ma’am,” Zhou Shuyi stammered. “I’m Zhou Shuyi, uh… Gao Shide’s… friend.”
Though flustered, he still managed a polite greeting.
The elegantly dressed woman instantly grasped what had just happened the moment she stepped in, but she held back her laughter and introduced herself smoothly.
“Hello. I’m Shide’s mother. It’s rare for him to have company. Why don’t you stay for dinner, Shide’s… friend.”
“Ah, th-thank you very much.”
She took a few steps toward the kitchen, then suddenly turned back with a teasing smile.
“By the way, our sofa bounces quite well, doesn’t it?”
Dangling the house keys from her finger, she cheerfully walked off toward the kitchen to prepare dinner.
“…”
The two young men — already blushing — somehow turned even redder.

~At the Dinner Table
On the table sat five dishes and one bowl of soup.
“Shuyi, here — try some of my cooking.”
Gao Shide’s mother picked up her chopsticks, took a piece of sweet-and-sour pork, and placed it into Zhou Shuyi’s bowl. But Zhou Shuyi just sat there, staring blankly at the food without moving his chopsticks.
“What’s wrong? You don’t like sweet-and-sour pork?”
“No, I love it. It’s just… seeing you reminded me of my mom. When I was a kid, she used to serve me food like this too…”
When the mother looked at her son, Shide silently mouthed, “She’s passed away.”
Understanding immediately, she nodded gently, then picked up another dish and added it to Zhou Shuyi’s bowl.
“Don’t be shy — eat as much as you want.”
“Thank you very much.”
Zhou Shuyi smiled brightly and took a mouthful of rice.
“Your cooking is incredible, ma’am,” he said sincerely.
“Eat more, alright? You’re so thin — my son might bully you.”
