“What I care about is whether you two are truly happy. Whether you cherish each other. Whether you have the strength to protect this bond, no matter what comes. Falling in love with someone — that’s a beautiful thing. But the world sometimes puts ugly labels on even the most beautiful love. If you truly love each other, don’t let anyone else’s opinions matter. Shuyi-chan, you and Shide are both my sons. If the world ever hurts you, you don’t have to hide it from me. A mother protects her sons — until the very end.”

“Auntie…”

Overwhelmed by her kindness and strength, Zhou Shuyi’s eyes filled with tears.

“What’s this ‘Auntie’ business?” she teased gently. “If you don’t call me properly, no dinner next time.”

“…M–Mom.”

Blushing bright red, Zhou Shuyi finally spoke the word he hadn’t said in years.

“There, there. Good boy, Shuyi-chan,” she said warmly, wrapping her arms around him and pulling him into a tight embrace.

Sitting on the floor, Gao Shide quickly turned away and wiped his eyes, pretending not to cry.

Later, after chatting a while, Gao Shide walked Zhou Shuyi home under his umbrella. Near the park close to Zhou Shuyi’s house, a black car was waiting — the family driver, as always.

Standing on the sidewalk, Zhou Shuyi looked at him and said, “You have such a wonderful mother.”

“She’s yours too,” Gao Shide replied softly. He held the umbrella with one hand, and with the other, opened the car door for him.

“Message me when you get home, okay? I’ll worry otherwise.”

“Yeah,” Zhou Shuyi nodded, ducking into the car.

Even though the night air was chilly and the rain still fell, his heart felt warm.

“Oh, right,” he said, lowering the window. “My dad bought a vacation house in Pingtung. When are you free in July? Let’s go spend a few days there.”

But as soon as he said it, Gao Shide’s expression froze.

He had been so happy he’d completely forgotten — he was supposed to move to America with his mother after graduation.

“Shu—…”

“Go home before you catch a cold. See you at school tomorrow. Bye,” Zhou Shuyi said quickly, cutting him off.

The car engine roared. Under the softly falling rain, the black car sped away — leaving Gao Shide standing alone on the quiet sidewalk.

~Campus

When the bell marking the end of class rang, Zhou Shuyi immediately grabbed his backpack and dashed out of the room.

He sprinted to the Information Engineering building, hoping to catch the person he was looking for.

But even after checking the lecture halls and the infirmary, that person was nowhere to be found.

Left with no choice, Zhou Shuyi sent a message asking Gao Shide where he was, then wandered around campus hoping to spot him somewhere.

“Ever since we started dating, he’s been like a completely different person. He’s just… so cute,” Gao Shide said with a grin, sitting at one of the wooden tables shaded by the trees.

Across from him, the campus doctor, Pei Shouyi, gave him a cold glare.

“You’re getting way too mushy. Keep talking like that and I’m leaving.” Pei Shouyi exhaled a puff of smoke, stubbed out his cigarette, and spoke bluntly.

Coughing awkwardly, Gao Shide quickly changed the subject.

“When he invited me on a trip, I was surprised. But when I saw how happy he looked, I couldn’t bring myself to tell him I was leaving for America after graduation.”

“You’re going to America?” A startled voice suddenly cut into the conversation.

From a distance, Zhou Shuyi had spotted the two of them talking and had planned to sneak up and surprise them.

But instead, he ended up hearing something that he wasn’t prepared for.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were going to America? And even if you’re planning a long-distance relationship, shouldn’t you at least ask how I feel about it? Gao Shide—are you just ignoring my opinion completely?”

“Shuyi, listen to me.”

Gao Shide stood up quickly and grabbed Zhou Shuyi’s arm, trying to calm his angry lover.

Pei Shouyi brushed the ashes from the table, stood, and patted Gao Shide’s shoulder.

“Bring me back some cigarettes as a souvenir. You know the brand.” With that, he tactfully left the two of them alone.

“Why are you going to America?” Zhou Shuyi asked.

“Mom’s getting remarried—to an American. We’ll be living there after the wedding. I’m going mostly for the ceremony… but I also wanted to see if I can get along with the man who’ll be my stepfather, and his kids too. We’re going to be a family, after all.”

“I see…”

They walked side by side down the tree-lined path of the campus.

Zhou Shuyi had thought maybe Gao Shide was hiding something serious — but it turned out to be good news about his mother, or rather, their mother, as he’d begun to think of her.

“Any other questions?” Gao Shide smiled teasingly, moving a little closer, watching Zhou’s face turn pink from embarrassment at his earlier outburst.

“How long will you be gone?”

“A few months, probably. But you hate even a few months apart, don’t you?”

“Get lost.”

Zhou Shuyi shoved him lightly, trying to hide his flustered expression.

But Gao caught his hand and held it, stopping them both. Then he leaned in close to Zhou Shuyi’s ear and whispered: “Come over tonight.”

“No way.” Zhou Shuyi’s face turned bright red — assuming Gao was implying something indecent — and he instantly refused.

“What are you thinking?” Gao sighed. “Mom wants to have dinner together before she leaves. She wants to get to know you better.”

“Damn it—tell me that first!” Zhou Shuyi gave him a light punch in the chest, cheeks still pink.

“So… your answer?”

“I’ll go.”

After glancing around carefully to make sure no one was watching, Gao Shide leaned in, brushed his lips against Zhou Shuyi’s, and immediately darted away.

“I’m heading to class. Let’s meet at the school gate when you’re done,” he called over his shoulder, slinging his backpack on.

Zhou Shuyi froze, stunned. Then, realizing what had just happened, he touched his lips — now burning red — and shouted after him: “GAO SHIDE! YOU BASTARD!”

His voice echoed across the campus as the culprit disappeared around the corner, grinning.

“I see. Then go ahead with that plan. Thanks.”

A middle-aged man in a suit sat in front of a painting, speaking on the phone. When he hung up, he turned to the driver standing beside him.

“Did you make the restaurant reservation? I plan to have dinner with Shuyi — let him know.”

“Sir, the young master said he’ll be staying over at a classmate’s house tonight.”

“Is that so? He didn’t tell me that.”

“It seems the young master is… in a relationship. But…”

The driver hesitated, watching his employer’s expression carefully, his words trailing off.

“But what?”

“It’s just that… the other person is…”

After a pause, the driver bent down slightly and spoke in a low voice, reporting the recent situation of the company president’s son.

Hearing it, the man looked at him in disbelief. The driver only nodded, confirming that what he said was true.

“…”

The man turned his gaze toward the painting on the wall, lost deep in thought.

Under the veil of night, Gao Shide and Zhou Shuyi sat side by side on the steps of a park, sipping beer while gazing at the city lights.

“Auntie’s cooking is really good,” Zhou Shuyi said, patting his full stomach with a satisfied burp.

“Call her that again and I’ll tell my mom,” Gao warned with a smirk. “Let’s see if she’ll still feed you when we’re in America.”

“Hey! That’s mean!”

“Wanna correct yourself?”
