Song Li also really wanted to ask her who she was and why she was here.
Before he could open his mouth, the girl had already jumped up, covering her chest with both hands as she took a violent step backward, “Help! A burglar broke in! Is anyone there? Someone comes quickly! A pervert here is trying to assault a teenage girl!”
Song Li was stunned by her few shouts, not expecting a girl who looked so thin and weak to have such a loud volume. Fearing that if she kept shouting it would disturb the neighbors; he hurriedly raised his hands in a gesture of surrender to pacify her.
“Wait a minute, wait a minute, I’m not a bad person, and I won’t hurt you. Calm down first, can we talk for a moment?”
Seeing that Song Li indeed had no intention of coming over, the young girl stopped shouting. However, she remained in a highly defensive posture by placing her hands on her hips to boost her presence, “Don’t you dare look down on me! This young lady here is no pushover; I can kick and crush your balls before you even manage to touch me!”
Song Li: ……
How can such a pretty and cute young girl completely change her style the moment she opens her mouth?
Song Li lowered his hands and spoke to her in as gentle a tone as possible, “Don’t worry, I won’t do anything to you. Look at me, do I look like a bad person?”
The girl scrutinized him carefully for a while, then popped the lollipop back into her mouth, speaking indistinctly, “You look quite handsome, you really don’t look like one.”
Song Li felt helpless. Although it was a good thing to eliminate her hostility toward him, as a public-school teacher, he couldn’t help but want to remind her that judging people by their looks was a bad idea.
The girl had already spoken up to question him again over there, “Who are you anyway? Why are you in my elder brother’s house?”
Song Li blanked, “Your elder brother?”
“Yeah, this is my elder brother’s house, I can come whenever I want.”
“Is your elder brother… named He Muyan?”
The girl nodded, looking quite surprised, “You know my elder brother? Are you his friend? But I’ve never seen you before.”
Song Li took a breath. So, it’s his sister-in-law.
No wonder he had felt a sense of familiarity ever since he looked at the girl’s features earlier. As it turned out, she resembled He Muyan; especially the eyes and the mouth, which looked as if they were cast from the exact same mold.
So, He Muyan has a sister. He had never mentioned it to him. Not just this sister, but also his family situation, background, and identity; Song Li knew absolutely nothing about any of it.
Even though they had already shared a bed for so long, aside from his name and this house, Song Li remained entirely in the dark about everything else related to him.
Realizing this point, Song Li suddenly felt a wave of powerlessness. With the young girl opposite him still waiting curiously for his answer, he could only force himself to cheer up, smiling as he said, “I… my name is Song Li. I’m a friend your brother just met recently, so that’s probably why you don’t know me.”
“Is that so?” The young girl nodded, staring at him for a moment before spreading her hands and shrugging, “Whatever, my brother has always been mysterious and hard to pin down, barely coming home a few times a year. How many friends he makes is none of my concern. But you’re good-looking, so I like you.”
This sister-in-law’s personality really was quite straightforward. Song Li smiled, then heard the girl questioning him again, “Are you very close with my brother? Why did you come to his house so late? What are you here for?”
Uh… close relationship?
What a great question.
Did a relationship where they had registered their marriage and rolled around in the sheets count as close?
Fearing he would scare her, Song Li naturally didn’t dare say any of this out loud. He laughed awkwardly and said, “It’s nothing, I just came to drop something off.”
“Oh, have you finished dropping it off?”
“I suppose so.”
“Then you can leave now.”
Song Li paused. Although there was nothing wrong with these words, he couldn’t actually leave. This was his home now too; if he left, where would he sleep tonight?
The sister-in-law didn’t seem to care about him anymore. Dangling the lollipop in her mouth, she walked over to the sofa to lie down, even opening a game on her phone to start a match.
Song Li couldn’t leave and just stood there, yet staying felt just as wrong. He was trapped in an awkward dilemma, at a loss for what to do.
Fortunately, the heavens hadn’t completely blocked his path. Just as he was filled with helplessness, the phone in his pocket suddenly vibrated with a loud “buzz-buzz.”
Startled, he hurriedly pulled it out to take a look; it was unexpectedly a phone call from He Muyan.
Looking at the name “President He” flashing on the screen, his previously anxious and helpless mood inexplicably settled down.
Letting out a breath, he answered the call.
“Hello.”
“Are you off work?”
He Muyan’s voice sounded a bit hoarse as if he had just woken up. He had likely pulled another all-nighter for work last night.
Song Li let out a soft “en”, “I’m already home.”
“Have you eaten dinner?”
Song Li glanced at his sister-in-law on the sofa, who was currently shouting curses while playing her game, and sighed silently, “Not yet.”
He Muyan seemed to catch some other noise on his end and asked in confusion, “Is there someone else next to you? Whose voice was that just now?”
As expected of President He, he was still this perceptive even from across the ocean.
Holding the phone, Song Li moved a bit further to the side and whispered in a very low voice, “There is indeed someone else at home. You definitely won’t guess who it is.”
He Muyan paused on the other end, and a moment later, spoke in a deep voice, “Is it someone from my family?”
Song Li took a sharp breath, practically wanting to clap and cheer for President He. If he hadn’t known He Muyan’s character well, he would have thought the man had installed surveillance cameras in the house and was remotely monitoring him from abroad; otherwise, how could he guess this so perfectly right on the mark?
Seeing that Song Li remained silent, He Muyan knew he had guessed correctly and let out a soft sigh, “Who is it? My mom?”
“No.” Song Li shook his head. “She says she’s your sister.”
“Hand the phone to her, I’ll talk to her.”
Holding the phone, Song Li walked over to the front of the sofa. His sister-in-law had just lost a game, and her face looked incredibly sour. Seeing him approach, she was a bit surprised, “Why haven’t you left yet!”
Song Li pointed at the phone, “Your brother wants to say a word to you.”
“My brother?” The sister-in-law furrowed her brows in confusion while murmuring in a low voice, “Why is my brother calling you if he wants to talk to me?”
Muttering under her breath, she took his phone, held it to her ear, and gave a loud, casual “Hello.”
“Oh, you’re on a business trip again.”
“Yeah, so what if I came over to have some fun?”
“I know, I know. You’re so naggy.”
“Huh? You mean this friend of yours…?”
The two siblings seemed to be talking about him. Song Li saw the sister-in-law look up toward him as she spoke, “He’s really good-looking, completely my type.”
“What do you mean? I just happen to like this type. Look who’s talking, aren’t you the same yourself?”
Song Li: …What is up with these two siblings!
“Oh, oh, what?!”
Just as Song Li was feeling speechless, he was suddenly startled by the sister-in-law’s soaring volume. He snapped completely awake in an instant and looked down at her.
The sister-in-law had already jumped up from the sofa, shouting into the phone, “What kind of joke are you playing! He Muyan, you must be crazy!”
“Shut up, shut up! I don’t believe it!”
“Stop talking, you scumbag!”
After roaring this final line, she hung up the phone with a loud snap, slammed the phone hard onto the sofa, and abruptly lifted her head to glare straight at him.
Startled backward a step by her vicious gaze, Song Li wondered why her emotions had completely shifted so rapidly all of a sudden.
“W-What’s wrong?”
The sister-in-law’s eyes had turned completely red as she extended a finger to point at him, “Where did a fox spirit like you spring up from, you shameless third party! Who allowed you to seduce my brother!”
Song Li was completely bewildered, “What are you talking about?”
The look the sister-in-law gave him grew increasingly full of disgust, and her finger trembled unstoppably, “So what if you’re good-looking? Compared to Brother Xiao Yuan, you’re far from it. You can’t even compare to a single one of his fingers!”
Hearing her speak more and more outrageously, Song Li looked at her inexplicably, “What on earth are you talking about? Who is Xiao Yuan? I…”
“Shut up! Shut up! You don’t deserve to mention Brother Xiao Yuan’s name!”
The sister-in-law suddenly became highly agitated. She reached out and pushed him hard, then grabbed her bag from the side and ran toward the door.
Losing his balance from her push, Song Li stumbled backward. He wanted to stand up and chase after her, but suddenly felt a wave of dizziness and vertigo, forcing him to reach out and hold onto the back of the sofa nearby. At the same time, a strong surge of nausea welled up in his stomach, and he couldn’t help but cover his mouth and dry heave twice.
This bout of dizziness and nausea lasted for a long time. Devoid of any remaining strength to go after the sister-in-law who had run off, he leaned against the sofa to compose himself for a while.
The phone that had been dropped into the crevice of the sofa kept vibrating continuously with a “buzz-buzz.” Song Li reached out to fish it out and swiped the answer button.
“Hello.”
Hearing his voice, He Muyan didn’t speak immediately. Only after quite a while did he speak up softly, “Has Tingting left?”
Tingting? Song Li thought about it; Tingting must be his sister-in-law’s name. So, he answered him, “She left. She ran out crying.”
“Did she… say any strange words?”
Song Li let out a soft “Yeah”, “She said a whole bunch.”
He Muyan fell silent for a moment, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know she would suddenly rush over there. I’ve caused you trouble.”
Song Li froze. After knowing He Muyan for so long, this was the first time he had ever heard him speak to him in such a tone.
His heart softened instantly, and he smiled, saying, “It’s fine. She’s just a kid after all. It’s common for them to be willful and throw tantrums.”
Seeming to detect the unnaturalness in his tone, He Muyan asked, “What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?”
Having experienced the previous few times, Song Li was no longer as surprised by President He’s sensitivity in certain areas.
“It’s nothing, I just suddenly felt a bit dizzy and nauseous. Maybe I didn’t rest well last night. By the way, it’s so late, will your sister be okay running out alone? Should I go out and look for her?”
“Don’t worry about her,” He Muyan’s tone was somewhat cold. “She’s used to acting willfully; she’ll be fine.”
Song Li let out an “Oh,” and had nothing else to say.
Neither of them spoke again. After a moment of silence, He Muyan suddenly called him in a low voice, “Song Li.”
“Hmm?”
“I will try my best to finish my work and come back early.”
Song Li froze for a moment. A warm, heated feeling surged in his heart, and his voice softened unconsciously, “Okay, I’ll wait for you.”
After hanging up the phone, Song Li clearly felt his body was much better than before. He rubbed his chest with his hand, wondering what that intense feeling of nausea from just a moment ago was all about. Could it be that he had eaten something bad in the cafeteria today?
Song Li didn’t actually pay much attention to this matter, simply assuming it was because he hadn’t rested well lately and so much had happened, leading to high pressure.
It wasn’t until two days later, when he returned to the office after finishing his class, that this feeling of dizziness and nausea struck him again; this time, it was even more intense than the last time. He covered his mouth and ran toward the restroom, dry heaving in front of the toilet for a long time.
The teachers in the office saw him return with a pale face while walking unsteadily and worriedly advised him to hurry to the hospital to get it checked out. Song Li waved his hand, but before he could even walk to his own desk, his vision went black and he collapsed.
