This shout of “Mom” not only shocked Song Li, but Mother Song was likewise startled in no small way. Indeed, she had inexplicably ended up with such a big, fully grown son all of a sudden, as if she had gotten him as part of a deal; anyone in her position would have found it awkward.
However, an old ginger is always spicier than a young one. Having seen all kinds of turbulent scenes throughout the greater half of her life, Mother Song quickly recovered her normal state. Smiling, she stepped aside to make way.
“Come inside first, don’t just stand there at the doorway.”
He Muyan nodded before casting a glance at Song Li beside him.
Song Li smiled at him and walked in first while carrying the items.
Mother Song watched the natural little gestures between the two of them but said nothing.
After changing their shoes and walking into the living room, they first heard the sound of the television. Father Song was sitting on the sofa, pinching his chin with a face full of contemplation as he stared at the chessboard set out on the coffee table.
Mother Song walked over and gave him a slap on the back, “Why are you still playing? The children are already here, hurry up and pack everything away.”
“Ah, they’re here already? What time is it even?”
Father Song rubbed his forehead, his eyes still glued to the chessboard, clearly rather reluctant to pack it up.
From behind, Song Li spoke to He Muyan in a small voice, “My dad hasn’t had any other hobbies in his life; he just drinks a bit of aged liquor and plays chess. He’s a veteran player, and he even frequently participates in the community’s chess tournaments.”
He Muyan nodded. Seeing that Mother Song was still nagging Father Song to pack up the chessboard, he set down the items in his hands and walked straight over.
Song Li looked at his silhouette, not knowing what he wanted to do again.
He Muyan walked to the opposite side of the coffee table and stared at the chessboard layout for a moment.
He was tall and his aura was too powerful. Even if he just stood there saying nothing, it was very difficult for anyone to ignore his presence.
Seeing him staring at the chess game so seriously, Mother Song found it hard to disturb him for the moment.
“Dad, the white piece’s next move should be cut off here; otherwise, it will be a dead game next.”
Father Song was just about to say “who are you calling ‘Dad’ here”, but his hand was faster than his brain as he placed the white piece onto the exact grid line He Muyan had pointed to. Right after that, his eyes brightened instantly, and he clapped his two hands together, speaking excitedly, “This move is wonderful! A stroke of genius!”
With that said, he hurriedly waved his hand to invite He Muyan to sit down, “Impressive. You’re so young, yet your chess style is so seasoned. Hurry, come over, play a couple of moves with me.”
“How are you two starting a game now? I told you…”
Seeing these two men who looked like monks entering meditation, Mother Song was just about to fly into a rage when Song Li pulled at her sleeve from behind.
“Mom,” Song Li called out to her in a small voice, “I see that Dad’s chess addiction has kicked in. Let him play for a bit.”
Mother Song gave him a disgruntled glare, “What time is it already? I’m waiting for him to act as my assistant and cook for me.”
Song Li smiled, pushing her toward the kitchen, “I know how to do the assistant work too. What big dish does Mom plan to make today? We few big men are certainly in for a treat.”
Mother Song slapped his hand, “Slick-tongued. Go wash that bag of shrimp for me.”
“Got it.” Song Li answered cheerfully before rolling up his sleeves to go wash the shrimp.
The mother and son duo, one directing and one working. The last time they had such a harmonious and happy scene was back during the Lunar New Year; in the blink of an eye, another year was about to pass.
From outside, the sounds of Father Song and He Muyan discussing the chess game came over from time to time. Father Song hadn’t met a worthy opponent in a long time lately, and it was obvious his spirits were very high today.
Mother Song went out once midway through to pour tea for them. After she came back, she kept staring at the back of her son’s head.
Song Li’s scalp went numb from her staring, and he helplessly stopped the work in his hands, “Mom, if you want to ask something, just ask.”
Mother Song let out a cold snort, “So you still know I have questions to ask. Then why didn’t you just confess everything yourself?”
Song Li thought about it and smiled bitterly, “It’s not that I don’t want to confess, I just don’t know where to start.”
Mother Song poked his forehead, “Spineless. You’re already in your thirties, yet for something as important as marriage, you actually kept it from us and went ahead with it on your own. Weren’t you afraid that the other party might be some kind of bad person or a scammer who was after your house or your car?”
Song Li waved his hands, “Mom, I can guarantee you this much, his marriage to me is absolutely not after my house or my car. Let me put it to you this way: the very day we registered our marriage; he went over to look at my apartment. He found it too small and directly had me move into his place. Good grief, it was a three-story small villa, where the yard is big enough to build a runway. The next day he gave me a car key; as for that car, even if I sold my crappy Santana, it might not even buy one of his tires.”
Hearing him finish, Mother Song was also somewhat shocked, “Is he that rich?”
“Mhm.” Song Li nodded, not daring to mention that He Muyan seemingly also owned a massive corporation.
Mother Song took a breath, glanced outside the door, and then turned back to look at her son. Her expression slowly transformed from shock to confusion, “Then that shouldn’t be right.”
“What?”
Mother Song shook her head, “The man is so good-looking, and he’s also young and promising. He’s not after your car mor is he after your house. Then what exactly did he see in you?”
Looking at the look of profound bewilderment on her face, Song Li felt like he had just been thoroughly dissed by his own biological mother.
For a split second, he really wanted to loudly tell his mom: He’s not after your son’s house nor was he after your son’s car, he’s after your son’s body!
Mainly the backside!
Of course, there was absolutely no way he dared to say such shameless words out loud. He could only give a strained, insincere smile to cover up his embarrassment.
“Mom, you asked me to bring the person over, and I’ve brought him. Tell me the truth, what do you think of him?”
Mother Song washed two green peppers and said with a smile, “The marriage certificates have already been registered, and he’s already called me ‘Mom.’ Even if I wasn’t happy with it, could I really force the two of you to get divorced?”
Hearing that her tone sounded quite satisfied, Song Li let out a careful breath, only to hear Mother Song continue, “But Mom still has a question I want to ask you.”
Song Li nodded properly, “Ask away, Mom.”
Mother Song shook the water off her hands, narrowed her eyes, and deliberately leaned in a bit closer to ask in a small voice, “You and him; between the two of you, who’s on top and who’s on the bottom?”
Song Li froze, his face suddenly flushing red, “Mom! What are you asking that for!”
Mother Song slapped his arm, “What’s the rush? I’m your old mother, what’s wrong with asking? What are you being shy for?”
Song Li scraped the potato in his hand, his hands shaking violently, “Just… this kind of thing, you should be able to tell just by looking, right…”
By the time he finished speaking, his voice was already so small a mosquito could barely hear it.
Mother Song nodded, “I can tell. You’re definitely the one on the bottom.”
Song Li’s face was so hot it could almost fry an egg.
Discussing bedroom matters with his newlywed husband in front of his own mother; what kind of utterly mortifying, ultimate social death situation was this?
Mother Song wasn’t done yet as she let out a sigh of lament, “No wonder then. Turns out all that effort in the past was for nothing.”
Song Li looked at her strangely, “Mom, what are you talking about?”
Mother Song took the potato from his hand, rinsed it with water, and placed it on the cutting board, speaking as she chopped, “I was thinking, if I had known my son was the one on the bottom, I shouldn’t have kept finding you those fresh-faced types and kids with smaller statures than you every single time in the past. No wonder you went on so many blind dates and not a single one worked out. Turns out you simply weren’t into that type at all, so wasn’t it just a waste of effort?”
Hearing her words, Song Li only felt deeply embarrassed. How was he supposed to explain to his mom that it wasn’t like he liked being the one on the bottom right from the start; it was just that the person he met that night was He Muyan, so he naturally became the one on the bottom.
It was just that things had already reached this point, and explaining further didn’t seem to make much sense either. Song Li chose to keep his mouth shut and not mention it anymore.
At noon, the family sat together to eat. Mother Song had made a massive table full of food. Her mood seemed to be excellent, and she even specially permitted Father Song to drink alcohol today.
He Muyan then pulled out two bottles of wine from the items he brought like a magic trick. Although Song Li didn’t know much about wine, he recognized the brand; despite being just two small bottles, they were incredibly valuable things.
Sure enough, Father Song’s eyes brightened the moment he saw them, and he patted He Muyan’s shoulder, praising him, “Xiao He has great taste! Today, we two men must drink until we’re drunk!”
After that clash on the chessboard over those two games before lunch, the relationship between the two of them had already taken a qualitative leap. Father Song was now calling him “Xiao He” left and right while speaking of “us two men”, acting completely as though he already viewed He Muyan as half a son.
Song Li looked at the attentive smile on the face of the man beside him and his experienced posture as he poured the wine. Heavens, he really didn’t want to admit that the person in front of him was the same He Muyan he usually knew.
After finishing lunch, Mother Song was scheduled to go play mahjong with her sisters as per usual. Father Song had drunk quite a bit at noon and had already been helped into the bedroom to lie down by this time.
Mother Song sliced a fruit platter for them, telling them they could watch television if they felt bored.
Seeing her holding her bag and getting ready to go out out the door, He Muyan took out a card from a paper bag nearby and handed it to her.
Mother Song took it, looked at it, and asked curiously, “What is this?”
“Mom, you’re going to the chess and card club to play mahjong, right? I heard from Xiao Li that the environment at the club you frequently visit isn’t very good. I specially had someone arrange an annual card at the Liren Club. Every service is at the supreme VIP level, so you and your sisters can go whenever you like. Even if it expires, it will automatically renew.”
He Muyan finished speaking nonchalantly, but Mother Song was already so shocked she covered her mouth with her hand. She looked down at the gold card in her hand again, “I know about this Liren Club. It costs quite a bit of money to go there just once. This annual card must be very expensive, right?”
“Money is a minor matter. Playing happily and keeping a good mood is what’s most important.”
“Happy, of course I’m happy.” The corners of Mother Song’s mouth could no longer contain her joy. Her eyes were completely full of approval as she looked at He Muyan before reaching out to pat his shoulder, “Our Xiao He really is a sensible child. What do you want to eat tonight? Mom will make absolutely anything for you guys.”
Well, congratulations to President He for successfully conquering yet another massive mountain.
Song Li sat on the sofa, propping his chin with one hand as he watched them.
By now, no matter what He Muyan said or did, he wouldn’t feel the slightest bit of surprise anymore. After all, this was someone who had spent years navigating the ups and downs of the business world; grasping and controlling someone’s psychology through their weaknesses and desires, and tailoring his approach to the individual, was the most basic of operations for him.
The only blame lay in the fact that he was usually too taciturn and cold with a powerful iceberg aura. From his appearance, he looked completely like a flower on a high ridge that others could only look up to but never reach. That was why every time Song Li saw him welcoming others with such a smiling face, it created a very intense sense of fragmentation.
He Muyan even went out of his way to see Mother Song out the door. When he returned to the living room, he saw Song Li leaning half-crooked on the sofa, smiling at him.
He Muyan seemed to regain his composure, returning to his usual expressionless demeanor. Reaching up to tug at his tie, he walked over and sat down beside him.
The moment he drew close, Song Li caught the heavy scent of alcohol on him. Only then did he remember that He Muyan had also drunk quite a bit at the dining table just now. It was just that his expression had been far too calm, and his state from beginning to end had been no different from a sober person, so much so that Song Li had almost forgotten the fact that he had just drunk Father Song under the table.
Now that it was just the two of them, the string He Muyan had kept taut seemed to slacken quite a bit all at once. His shoulder even leaned slightly against Song Li’s as he rubbed his temples with his fingers.
It was rare for Song Li to see him in such a completely defenseless state. Although it was probably due to the alcohol, could he perhaps be a bit thick-skinned and think that He Muyan was already starting to want to rely on him just a tiny bit?
