“Yes, yes, I’ll fix it, I’ll fix it.”

Zhou Shuyi pouted and repeated, properly this time:

“Mom’s home cooking is the best.”

“Much better.”

“Che.”

He glared at the smug look on Gao Shide’s face, took another sip of beer, then spread his arms wide and looked up at the sky.

“This place is really nice.”

“Give me your hand.”

“Huh?” Zhou Shuyi tilted his head, watching his boyfriend rummage through his backpack.

“When I was shopping with Mom, I saw this and thought it would suit you.”

Gao Shide took Zhou Shuyi’s wrist and wrapped a leather bracelet around his right arm, fastening it with a magnetic clasp. Then he took out another, identical one, and put it on his own right wrist.

“Don’t ever take it off.”

“Not even when I shower?” Zhou Shuyi blinked, teasing lightly.

“Well… I’ll make an exception for that. But from now on, the only things you wear should be what I’ve given you.”

“Why’s that?”

“I can’t change what’s in your past…” As he said that, Gao Shide brushed his fingers over the necklace Zhou Shuyi still wore — the one from Jiang Yuxin — then firmly took Zhou Shuyi’s right hand, the one now wearing the matching bracelet.

And in Japanese, the language his lover understood best, he confessed once more: “But your future belongs only to me.”

He pulled Zhou Shuyi into his arms and kissed him — a soft, lingering kiss that carried the chill of the night breeze.

Once, all he could do was watch the person he admired from afar.

But now, that person was right in front of him.

He could feel his breath, his heartbeat — and the rhythm of his own, pulsing with love, perfectly in sync.

A Few Days Later―

Gao Shide opened the taxi’s trunk and began loading the luggage inside.

At the front door, his mother hugged Zhou Shuyi — whom she now treated like a second son — and said her farewells with deep reluctance.

“I almost wish I could take you with me.”

Zhou Shuyi embraced the mother who was soon to depart for America, equally reluctant to let her go.

“Mom, if you need anything, please tell me. I’ll send it to you right away.”

“You really are such a sweet boy, Shuyi.”

She released her arms from around his neck and then turned to glare at her real son, who was standing nearby.

“You could learn a thing or two from him, my foolish son.”

“He’s only sweet to you, Mom. To other people— Ow!”

Before he could finish, his lover smacked him, shooting him a warning look that said, “watch it.”

“Well then, we should get going. I’ll make sure to return Shide to you as soon as possible. Or maybe… I’ll make sure he can never leave your side for the rest of his life.”

“Mom!” Zhou Shuyi burst out, half laughing and half crying.

The words ‘Your future belongs only to me’—which had slipped out of Gao Shide’s mouth days earlier—had since become his mother’s favorite line for teasing them.

Watching his mother settle into the taxi, Gao Shide muttered to the boyfriend standing beside him, clearly exasperated.

“I really don’t get it. Why does my mother like you more than her own son?”

“Because I’m just that lovable.”

Gao Shide tilted his head back dramatically, looking at the man he adored—and who drove him crazy—and said, in a tone that was both scolding and affectionate: “From now on, the only person who’s allowed to love you—besides my mom—is me.”

“You—!”

Zhou Shuyi’s cheeks flushed red in an instant.

That’s unfair! Completely unfair!

How could he just throw out such sweet words out of nowhere like that? It left Zhou Shuyi utterly speechless.

“Wait for me,” Gao Shide said softly.

His eyes lingered on the lover he had finally claimed—eyes filled with longing and reluctance to part.

Zhou Shuyi scrunched his nose, then opened his arms and pulled him into a tight embrace.

“I will. We’ll stay in touch. Take care, okay?”

The taxi carrying Gao Shide’s mother and her son gradually disappeared down the road.

But Zhou Shuyi stayed where he was, standing at the gate, waving until the car vanished from sight—seeing off two people who were both precious to him.

~On the Plane

[I don’t really like using email, but I made one just for you. Here’s a brain teaser — can you figure out what it means?]

Inside the plane that was about to depart, Gao Shide stared at the message on his phone, along with the teasing sticker that came with it.

[[email protected]]

(mailto:[email protected]) — that was the account Zhou Shuyi had made for him.

“You’re smiling like that… you actually like being called that?” His mother leaned closer to peek at the screen, sighed, and said: “Do you even know what Abruti means in French?”

Pointing at the email address, she chuckled. “It means idiot. Honestly, people in love are a special kind of crazy.”

“So that’s what it means, huh?” Smiling faintly, Gao Shide began to decode the rest of it.

“What does the number part mean then?” his mother asked.

Gao pointed at the address again.

“‘Abruti’ means ‘idiot,’ and 87887278—if you look at it in ASCII—translates to four English letters: W X H N. If you convert that into Chinese pronunciation, it becomes the initials for Wo Xi Huan Ni—‘I like you.’ So basically, the email means: I’m idiotically in love with you.”

Upon hearing that, his mother’s face softened into a sweet, almost melting smile.

“That’s… actually really romantic. Maybe that’s what happens when a bookworm falls in love. And you’re pretty clever yourself!”

“Of course. I take after my mother,” he said proudly.

“Well, that’s true,” she agreed, equally smug.

Then her tone softened. “If you really love him, take good care of him, all right? No bullying.”

“I know, Mom.”

Lifting her chin with mock authority, she added: “And just so you know, I’m on his side. Sorry, son.”

“What about me?” he protested.

“You?”

His mother averted her eyes, pulled the in-flight catalog from the seat pocket in front of her, and ignored her jealous son.

“You can take care of yourself.”

Just then, a flight attendant walking by noticed his phone.

“Excuse me, sir, we’ll be taking off shortly. Please switch off your mobile device.”

“Ah, sorry.”

He quickly typed a reply, hit send, and locked the screen.

“Come on, put it away already. You can talk to Shuyi once we land.”

“I know, I know. And stop spying on our messages,” he muttered, pressing the power button before slipping the phone into his jacket pocket.

***

On the other side of town, Zhou Shuyi sat by his window, reading the message that had just arrived.

[Shuyi, I love you too.]

He smiled faintly, gazing out at the sky.

“Loving someone really does make you an idiot, doesn’t it?”

The words escaped him along with a quiet laugh.

Yes—falling in love makes you a fool.

Then let’s stay that way forever—

laughing together, loving each other,

and being fools for each other for the rest of our lives.

I translate not simply to change words from one language to another, but to build a bridge between stories and the people who are waiting to discover them.
