~Campus
“Hey, let’s go get some mala hot pot later. You love spicy food, right? I know this place that’s super popular online — how about it?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Lately we haven’t really gone out anywhere. How about a trip to one of the outlying islands? Or maybe stay at a cottage? Whatever you want — I’m fine with anything you like.”
Walking down the hallway, Liu Bingwei kept suggesting plans for after class, but Zhou Shuyi seemed distracted, barely hearing a word.
“Actually, the reason I wanted to invite you out is…”
Seeing Zhou Shuyi’s strange reaction, Liu Bingwei stopped in front of him, gently tugged at his jeans, and decided to finally say the words he’d been holding back for so long.
“Gao Shide?”
But Zhou Shuyi’s eyes were already fixed on someone else — the figure walking toward them down the corridor.
Gao Shide, who had been chatting with Shi Zheyu about class, looked up reflexively when he heard his name. But instead of walking toward Zhou Shuyi with his usual easy smile, he quickly averted his gaze, pretending to pat his pockets.
“I forgot my phone,” he mumbled — then hurried off without another glance.
Shi Zheyu, completely baffled, shot Zhou Shuyi an irritated glare before following Gao Shide out of the hallway.
“…”
A feeling like being ‘abandoned’ welled up inside Zhou Shuyi’s chest. He grabbed his backpack and turned abruptly in the opposite direction.
“The classroom’s that way! Where are you going? Hey! Shuyi! Hey!”
Liu Bingwei shouted after him several times, still unsure what was happening. Then he sighed, caught up to him, slung an arm over his shoulder, and quietly led the shaken Zhou Shuyi to the mala hot pot place — treating him to the meal instead.

~The Infirmary
“Aaaaaaah—! Have mercy—! Waaah!”
A bloodcurdling scream — like a pig being slaughtered — echoed from the infirmary all the way out into the corridor, making every passerby shiver.
Inside, Pei Shouyi was tending to a student’s injury. But instead of easing the patient’s pain like a normal doctor, he pulled the bandage tight — so tight it felt more like torture — until the poor male student howled from the pain.
“If you drive recklessly again, I’ll make sure you really do break a bone next time. You’ve got the guts to pull a stupid stunt like that? Then learn what pain feels like, so you’ll understand you’re not supposed to got hurt the body your parents gave you.”
The student, pale from pain, still found enough strength to talk back.
“It’s not ‘if you got hurt’, it’s ‘if you hurt yourself’, doctor. You should study your grammar again.”
Pei Shouyi gave a cold smile and pressed his fingers with a strong force against the freshly bandaged wound. The ‘little piglet’ he was tormenting screamed again.
“Ow! Owwww!”
“Get out!”
“Okay, okay, I’m going!”
The moment Pei Shouyi released him, the mouthy student tumbled backward and, with his friend’s help, hobbled out of the infirmary — away from that place more terrifying than hell itself.
Standing by the door, Gao Shide watched the whole thing. As the terrified students escaped from the merciless school doctor, he quietly stepped aside to let them through.
“Pei Shouyi.”
“…”
Pei Shouyi looked up. Standing there, with the sun at his back, Gao Shide’s figure overlapped with a memory —
A time long ago, when someone had silently watched over him as he ate cup noodles in the infirmary hallway.
“Pei. Shou. Yi!” When the other man didn’t respond, still seated in his chair, Gao Shide had already walked closer and finally raised his voice to pull him back to reality.
“Hm?” Pei Shouyi blinked, answering vaguely as he looked up at the man standing before him.
“Lost in thought?”
“No. It’s just… seeing you standing there at the door reminded me of a troublesome student from the high school I used to work at…”
Noticing how pale Gao Shide looked, Pei Shouyi quickly pieced things together and asked, “What happened? Did you two have a falling out?”
Otherwise, those two — who were practically inseparable until recently — would never be acting separately.
Gao Shide shoved his hands into his pockets and asked flatly, “Why did you deliberately mess with us that day?”
―――Why did you have to expose the secret I’d been hiding — right in front of him?
“Who said you could eat my instant noodles?”
“Instant noodles? That’s what this is about?”
“You can eat anything else you want, but not those. Because…”
Pei Shouyi caught himself before finishing the sentence. He grabbed a file, stood, walked around to the other side of the desk, and slammed it down.
“They were mine.”
“If you hadn’t interfered like that, at least until graduation, we could’ve stayed friends.”
“I don’t understand why you’re so angry.”
Taking off his white coat, Pei Shouyi sat down and looked at Gao Shide with calm, serious eyes.
“It’s better to make everything clear now than waste time pretending, isn’t it?”
Emotions are like fire — you can’t wrap them up in paper. And this man, of all people, wears his feelings on his face. Pei Shouyi had only set fire to the paper that was already wrapped around the flame; what was so wrong about that?
“Yeah, you’re right. A man with an emotional disorder who doesn’t even understand ‘happiness’ could never understand how I feel.”
“Gao Shide!”
Pei Shouyi glared sharply, a cold warning in his tone. Gao Shide realized he’d gone too far and lowered his head apologetically.
“…Sorry. I’ve got class.”
Leaving the awkward, heavy air behind, he turned and walked out of the infirmary toward the classroom.

~Piano Room
“Damn it…”
In the piano room, Zhou Shuyi leaned his elbow on the music stand, muttering under his breath as he stared at the phone sitting in front of him.
On the screen was his chat with Gao Shide — every message there brought back memories of the happy times they’d spent together.
“If you miss him that much, why don’t you just go see him instead of sulking here?”
Jiang Yuxin, who had been standing quietly at the door for several minutes, finally walked over to the grand piano. Zhou Shuyi didn’t even glance up; he just kept staring at the screen, not calling, not messaging, just… looking.
Still gazing at his phone, Zhou Shuyi replied, “If I go see him, it’ll look like I care. That’d be embarrassing.”
At his childish reasoning, Jiang Yuxin’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“What kind of nonsense is that? You’re being ridiculous.”
“Still… don’t you think it’s weird? We’re in different departments, different classes, even different buildings — but somehow, he always manages to find me every day. Why does he always hang around near me?”
He wanted to ask Gao Shide directly, but he had been avoiding him on purpose. So lately, Zhou Shuyi had been the one searching for him like an idiot — in classrooms, in the cafeteria — but the guy who used to be annoyingly everywhere was suddenly nowhere to be found.
Jiang Yuxin spread her hands and shrugged.
“It’s not weird at all.”
“Why not?”
“Because ever since we were kids, no matter where you were, whenever I looked around — he was always there, right beside you.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Did you forget? Whenever we played hide-and-seek, if he was ‘it,’ he always found you first. Because…”
