*Foreword (by the Original Script Writer):

“I grew up reading Ms. Lin’s work!”

Those were the words Yuu-chan said the first time we met, but the only thing that popped into my head then was — I want to hang her up and beat her!

This girl doesn’t know how cruel I can be; even now, whenever we meet she still says things like that. And as punishment each time, I choke her — yes, she’s a masochist.

She, who grew up reading my books, now makes a name for herself in the BL novel world as ‘Yu Chenhuan’. But to me she’s not only a tomboy; she’s the kind-hearted ‘Yuu-chan’. Time has passed and our circumstances have changed, but our passion for creating and our friendship remain the same.

Well — even so, I still want to hang her up and beat her. Heh heh heh.

Reading the stories she wrote brought back the feelings I had when I created this work—

To speak of “hidden feelings” and “love” in a simple way.

Yuu-chan, with her seriousness and skill with words, turned the script into a novel and gave it imaginings that surpass drama. She fleshed out each character’s longing for that hidden love.

This is the second time I’ve had one of my BL scripts novelized. A novelist who tackles the work seriously and tries to get to the core of the script happened to be my friend, and being with her, needless to say, is very reassuring.

Now, instead of hanging her up this time, I think I’ll tie her up and smack her.

📝 Before returning to the room, Lin Peiyu decided to “punish” the mischievous child.

*Prologue:

“What’s so much better about that woman than me?”

“You’re far more wonderful.”

“Then why are you with her?”

“At least in front of her, I’m a man. I’m admired and needed as a man.”

A boy, just back from school, had a fifth-grade language textbook in one hand and reached for the doorbell with the other. But when he heard the voices inside, he lowered his hand. To block out the sound of the argument, he covered his ears with both hands. Even so, the cutting words pierced through his eardrums, telling him clearly what was happening inside the room.

He didn’t know what the word ‘infidelity’ meant. But his father spent less and less time at home, and his mother cried secretly more and more often. In a home that had once been full of laughter, only alienation and indifference remained.

Suddenly, the door banged open. The man who came out of the house noticed the boy standing there.

The boy, eyes full of fear, instinctively stepped back a few paces.

“You despise me too, don’t you?”

The man, forgetting the innocence of a ten-year-old, spoke with self-mockery. After one last look at his son’s face, he left the place that no longer had any value for him and where he no longer felt he belonged.

Through the open door, the boy could see his usually strong mother sitting on the living room sofa, hiding her face and crying. Not knowing how to comfort her, he quietly closed the door and decided to return to the one place he knew best — his school.

***

In the hallway beside the classroom, desks and chairs were stacked up, waiting to be replaced with new ones. At the end of the corridor, near the staircase, a boy sat hugging his knees, quietly crying.

“What’s wrong? Did you hurt yourself? Are you okay?”

Suddenly, an unfamiliar voice called out. A boy in a black shirt, speaking with a Japanese accent, approached the staircase and curiously asked the boy who had stayed behind after school.

“…”

The boy glanced up for just a moment before burying his face back into his arms. The sleeves of his light-blue shirt were damp with tears.

“Here.”

The boy in the black shirt pulled a handkerchief out of his pants pocket, sat down beside him, tugged gently at his shirt hem, and held it out.

“Don’t cry anymore. Your face is a mess with tears and snot.”

“Leave me alone.”

He refused the handkerchief, stubbornly wiping his tears with his sleeve instead.

“Why are you crying?”

“Dad… he abandoned me and Mom.”

Even at ten years old, though there were still many things he didn’t understand, he knew the meaning of the word ‘divorce’.

Divorce meant father and mother would live apart. From then on, he would have to choose whether to live with his father or with his mother—that was all. He had heard as much from classmates who lived with only one parent.

To live happily together again as the three of them once had… was no longer possible.

“It must be nice… having a mom.”

Clutching the handkerchief, the boy said this with a serious expression.

“My mom became an angel.”

“Became an angel? What do you mean by that?”

The boy patted his shoulder, speaking in the gentle way adults often use to comfort someone.

“You can still see your mom and dad, right? But me… even when I’m sad and my heart hurts, my mom will never come back.”

Seeing the sorrow on his face, the boy finally took the handkerchief from him and wiped away the snot and tears on his own face.

“Want my dad? Being with him isn’t any good anyway.”

“Who on earth gives away their dad?”

At those words, the boy nodded. “Then I’ll give myself to you. You can call me anytime you need me.”

“Pfft.”

The boy who had been crying with a runny nose broke into a smile, and seeing this, the other boy spoke in a childlike, earnest voice:

“Smile. Crying is just a waste of time. My dad said so. Instead of crying, smile, work hard, and become strong. Because when you cry, you only cry alone. But if you smile, the whole world will smile with you.”

“Smile… together?”

Hearing words he didn’t quite understand, the boy looked at the face of the one sitting beside him with a puzzled expression.

“Shuyi, where are you!?” Suddenly, a grown-up’s voice calling out in search of someone echoed from a distance.

“Over here!”

The boy stood up, brushed the dust from his backside, and ran down the stairs toward the voice. But then he suddenly stopped, turned back, and looked at the boy who was still sitting there. With a beaming smile, he said: “If you ever feel like crying, I’ll lend you my shoulder. I’m Zhou Shuyi, Class 5-1 at San Qiao Elementary. What about you?”

Standing against the backlight of the setting sun, the boy looked warm and gentle—like an angel straight out of a picture book.

“Gao Shide.”

Gazing at the boy wrapped in the evening glow, the teary-eyed child answered softly.

Zhou Shuyi nodded and smiled at his new friend.

“Gao Shide. I’m glad I met you. See you around.”

Waving at Gao Shide, he spun around and left.

Still sitting there, the boy watched the little angel’s figure recede into the distance, dazed and motionless…

*Translator’s Note: Do note that I’m translating this from the Japanese version of the novel (physical copy), not the Chinese one. If there are any mistakes with titles or names, please do inform me. This novel consists of a prologue, 6 chapters, and 3 extra chapters (249 pages). However, the numbering for my chapter will be different from the original novel. I don’t wanna divide my chapters into parts so we’ll just go slowly as chapter 1, 2, 3 until we reach whichever number of chapters we’ll get to. I’ve divided it so that each chapter that I’m posting on the site will probably be around 1K to 1.2K words (except for the Mature chapter which would normally be longer). For this novel, there is only one mature chapter. I will mark at the beginning of each chapter with ‘Chapter 1, Part 1’ and so on so that if you get your hands on the novel, you can still find which is which. By the way, I watched the series a long time ago, so I might forget a few things. I’ll appreciate some enlightenment along the way. With that being said, hop on and enjoy! -K

*P/S: I’ll announce head on that some of the novels that I have in hand which are adapted from or to series are these, ‘We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd’, ‘HIStory 3 Love Trapped’, ‘HIStory3 Make Our Days Count’, ‘The Red Thread (Until We Meet Again)’ vol. 1, and ‘The Red Thread (Until We Meet Again)’ vol. 2. They are all the officially-translated-to-Japanese versions. I might translate them all. Or I might not. Deep down, I really want to. If time and energy allow me in the near future, that is. -K

I translate not simply to change words from one language to another, but to build a bridge between stories and the people who are waiting to discover them.
