After this little incident, the planned welcome dinner was canceled. It was safest to go home.
Shen Lin thought his dad was overreacting. He turned his face in the passenger seat and said, “Mom and Auntie are still waiting in the private room.”
The little guy had been away from home for so long. Chu Ying had booked the best restaurant in Beicheng, gone early to prepare, and hired a professional team to decorate the private room. Shen Minyan didn’t want to waste Chu Ying’s efforts either, but if they went to the hotel, there might be sasaeng fans. While he was hesitating, his phone rang. Shen Yan reached over and picked up the little guy, holding him so his father could answer the phone.
It was Chu Ying. Her voice was very nervous: “Hello, Old Shen, did you pick up Yanyan and Youyou?”
Shen Minyan said, “Mm.”
The little guy was playing happily with his brother. Shen Lin had stuffed a piece of milk candy in his mouth, his cheeks puffed out.
“Good, good. Don’t come over. Go straight home.”
Shen Minyan was silent for a moment: “But…”
Chu Ying interrupted: “No buts. You take them home. I’ve already had the food sent back. We’ll eat at home.”
Shen Minyan nodded: “Okay.”
Chu Ying was still worried and asked to speak to the little guy.
Shen Minyan held the little guy with one arm and said softly, “Youyou, it’s Mom.”
“Mom.” The little guy held the phone and called out sweetly.
The little guy’s voice was normal. Chu Ying’s heart finally settled. She smiled and answered: “Yes.”
Chu Ying asked if the little guy missed Mom. The little guy nodded vigorously in his father’s arms: “Yes, super much.”
After talking for a bit, the little guy handed the phone to Shen Yan: “Big Brother, Mom wants to talk to you.”
After calling her son, Chu Ying left the hotel. Chu Ying’s car happened to arrive, and they drove back to the Shen house. The family, reunited after a long time, returned home safely. The little guy was carried by his father. As soon as he got out of the car, he saw Grandpa Butler holding Su Yuanzi.
“Woof, woof woof!”
The leash restricted Su Yuanzi’s movement. The dog’s paws clawed at the ground, his tail wagging frantically.
“Yuanzi!”
The familiar voice of his little master made Su Yuanzi even more excited. He ran forward, tongue out. Shen Minyan had just put the little guy down when Su Yuanzi ran to him, dragging the butler.
Su Youli crouched down and petted the dog’s head, hugging his neck, saying in his milky voice: “Yuanzi, did you miss me? I missed you so much. In Country D, I met lots of dogs. One was named Lala, a Corgi with a tail, only one year old.”
Su Yuanzi licked his tongue, barking, his tail wagging against Su Youli. The little one and the dog were overjoyed. Shen Lin stayed in the yard with his brother. Shen Minyan called Chu Ying to ask where she was. Shen Yan contacted Tang Dou. Tang Dou was returning with the bodyguards and would arrive in two minutes. Behind the bodyguard car was a big G. Tang Dou recognized it as Pei Yi’s car.
Pei Yi had gone to pick up his wife and nephew. Just as he had picked them up and was about to greet Shen Yan, the fans rushed out. The sudden crowd surrounded Shen Yan and Su Youli. Fortunately, the Shen family’s bodyguards were strong, and Shen Yan and Su Youli were not hurt. Pei Qiqi was held by his uncle, his expression serious. He kept asking how much longer until they got home and if Youyou was safe.
Pei Qiqi and Hua Zhao also met a few fans, all girls, standing far away. They first waved uncertainly: “Hello, are you Hua Zhao and Qiqi?”
When Hua Zhao smiled and nodded, the girls clenched their fists, excitedly took two steps forward, and bent down to ask quietly if they could take a photo. The fans felt super lucky to run into celebrities at the airport. It was the popular Pei Qiqi and his aunt from the recent kids’ show.
Pei Yi, seeing his wife signing autographs for fans, sighed: “When will you have so many fans picking you up? That would be great.”
Hua Zhao’s mouth twitched. She looked up and couldn’t see Shen Yan anymore, with a crowd following behind him. These people had professional equipment, almost as good as the show’s photographers. It didn’t feel like fans, but reporters. Only after getting in the car and seeing a video of Shen Yan being chased by fans online did Hua Zhao read the comments and realize those people weren’t fans but sasaeng fans and paparazzi. As soon as the car stopped, Pei Qiqi jumped out and ran to the Shen family’s door, standing on tiptoe to look inside.
“Qiqi?” Shen Lin noticed him first and waved him in.
On the green lawn, a small figure was running, followed by a fluffy white dog. Seeing that the little guy was okay, Pei Qiqi relaxed and greeted Shen Lin from outside.
“You saw Youyou, right? I told you he was fine, but you didn’t believe me.” Pei Yi raised an eyebrow.
Pei Qiqi’s ears turned red. He grabbed his backpack from his uncle, slung it over his shoulder, and took Hua Zhao’s hand. The child was shy. Hua Zhao smiled and led Pei Qiqi into the house. Pei Yi, who was miserably unloading the luggage, was speechless. Su Youli played with Su Yuanzi in the garden for twenty minutes. Chu Ying and Chu Ying arrived. The moment the little guy saw his mother, he threw himself into her arms, calling “Mom” softly, hugging her and acting spoiled.
Shen Yan arrived with two lawyers, who distributed a supplementary confidentiality agreement to everyone in the studio. Everyone signed it. Xiao Gao led the pledge of loyalty, and the others followed. Shen Yan was busy until the afternoon. On his way home from work, he stopped at a cake shop to buy a cake for the little guy. It was a private cake shop near the office building, catering to white-collar elites with high standards for life.
The clerk was familiar with Shen Yan and recognized him even with the mask. Seeing him bending over to choose, the clerk smiled: “Teacher Shen, do you still want the little rabbit cake? We just sold the last one. The baker is still making more. It’ll be a while.”
Shen Yan, one hand in his pocket, asked: “Do you have a Stitch cake?”
The clerk shook his head. Shen Yan thought it was a pity.
“Do you need a recommendation?” the clerk asked, seeing him hesitating.
“Please,” Shen Yan nodded.
The clerk came out from behind the counter and introduced the best-selling desserts. Shen Yan looked at them all and wasn’t satisfied. Not that he was picky, but his mother had said the little guy couldn’t eat too many sweets. Only twice a week, one at a time. Otherwise, cavities would find him. If not for the restriction, he would buy all the desserts. The clerk, hearing it was for Youyou, immediately got starry-eyed, hands clasped under her chin, a doting smile.
“It’s for Youyou! How about this little pig custard bun? It has custard filling.”
The cute little pig custard bun shape- no child could resist. After confirming the custard buns had no additives and used pure ingredients, Shen Yan packed all four remaining buns.
“Please put them in two bags, and add a coconut milk jelly.”
The clerk packed them carefully, using the cutest bags in the shop.
When Shen Yan went to pay, the male clerk pushed his hand away, smiling: “I’m a fan of Youyou. He’s so cute. These are on me.”
How could that be? Shen Yan insisted on paying. The clerk blocked his phone, so Shen Yan put two red bills on the counter.
“Teacher Shen, no need to pay.”
The two pushed back and forth, drawing glances from other customers. The clerk, afraid of exposing Shen Yan, took the money and gave him a six-inch mille crepe cake as well.
“Teacher Shen, take care. Please let Youyou eat it. If he likes it, I’ll make something else next time.”
Shen Yan carried the bags in both hands. Walking away, he saw the male clerk waving at the door. Sure enough, the little guy was thrilled to see the little pig custard buns, drooling as he leaned on the table. Shen Yan had also bought a portion for Pei Qiqi and had Tang Dou deliver it across the street. The two little ones couldn’t be separated once they met, sitting in the yard eating the custard buns together.
After dinner, Pei Qiqi came to play with Youyou. The two little ones and the dog followed Shen Lin to the second-floor playroom for crafts. After the children left, the adults on the first floor began to discuss serious matters. Both little ones were at the right age for kindergarten. Having been neighbors for a while, the Shen family thought Pei Yi and Hua Zhao were good people. Qiqi was well-behaved and polite. Pei Qiqi had been through something bad, so Pei Yi was very cautious about choosing a kindergarten. He had looked at over a dozen and hadn’t decided.
Shen Minyan was also anxious. He felt guilty about Youyou. The shadow of the child being stolen hadn’t faded in three years. He didn’t really want Youyou to go to kindergarten. He felt safe only when the child was within his sight. But he knew that wasn’t good for the child. So the two families decided to send the two little ones to the same kindergarten, so they could look after each other.
Chu Ying asked with concern: “How is Qiqi now?”
“I took him to the hospital yesterday. Doctor Du said Qiqi has no problems with basic communication and can go to kindergarten,” Hua Zhao said.
“That’s good.” Chu Ying was happy for her.
Shen Yan pressed the remote, and a screen descended in the living room, showing the kindergartens Shen Minyan had screened.
“There are many kindergartens in Beicheng. There are five near us.”
Two were deleted: a public kindergarten was too far, and a private one had only been open for a year. Shen Minyan had visited and felt the classrooms and playrooms smelled of formaldehyde, so he crossed it out.
“These two each have their pros and cons. Let’s look together.” Shen Minyan stood by the screen, taking the remote from Shen Yan.
At home, Shen Minyan wore simple casual clothes. But his aura made Pei Yi feel like he was at a major decision-making meeting. However, Shen Minyan knew he wasn’t at the company, and the people below weren’t his subordinates. After listing the pros and cons, he cleared his throat: “Do you have any better choices?”
Pei Yi did. He had been dealing with early childhood education units since returning to China.
“I consulted a professional teacher. They suggested a long-term plan. If you want the child to study abroad, an international kindergarten is best; if in China, some public and private kindergartens are good choices.”
Pei Yi sent the information to Shen Minyan, who projected it on the screen.
