MHWFYYTMDF Chapter31

Let's Talk it Out

This guy, even though he’s this angry himself, is still here flirting with him! He’s flirting with him!

Did he really think he could just be flirted with so easily and forgive you just like that!

Song Li’s face was burning terribly, not knowing whether it was from anger or from being flirted with so hard by He Muyan’s words. When he turned back to look at him, he once again met his laughing eyes.

Song Li’s heart skipped a beat, and unable to take it anymore, he reached out and covered his eyes.

“If you keep doing this, I’m really going to get mad.”

He Muyan withdrew his hand, his fingers brushing away the redness at the corner of his eyes. “My wife is not only obedient and adorable, but also thin-skinned. I can’t even praise you a little without making you embarrassed.”

Song Li felt extremely embarrassed and looked at him pleadingly, “He Muyan.”

He Muyan stopped teasing him, held his hand, and sat face-to-face with him, saying seriously, “What you mentioned is precisely what I wanted to talk to you about today. It’s about my family, my friends, as well as about myself.”

Seeing how serious he was, Song Li became nervous too, swallowing hard.

He Muyan had already begun speaking unhurriedly, “You should be able to tell that my relationship with my family has never been very good, so I don’t usually initiate conversations about them. I have an older brother four years older than me, and a younger sister below me. You’ve met her, she’s not yet eighteen this year and is still in high school. The family spoils her terribly, and honestly, her personality isn’t very pleasant either.”

Song Li thought back to the situation when he first met his sister-in-law that night and smiled awkwardly, “A teenager in adolescence, it’s understandable.”

He Muyan shook his head, seemingly not wanting to say much more, “My family’s business was built from scratch by my grandfather and expanded and strengthened in my father’s hands. My father is a very successful businessman, but not a qualified father. He desperately wanted to cultivate his two sons into people like him. My brother grew up step by step according to the path he planned from a young age and eventually became a successor who satisfied him. He’s already the youngest vice president of the group company now.”

Song Li listened to him quietly, blinked, and asked him, “Then what about you?”

“Me?” He Muyan gave a little laugh. Looking at the way Song Li was tilting his head up slightly and listening so attentively, he truly seemed adorably obedient, and He Muyan couldn’t resist leaning down to kiss his cheek again.

Song Li pushed him away, urging anxiously, “Hurry up and tell me!”

He Muyan smiled softly, “It’s nothing much. I’m not the kind of son that satisfies my father, and I don’t share my brother’s personality either. I had no interest in what they were doing, so while I was still attending university abroad, I tried starting my own business. To my surprise, I ended up making a bit of a name for myself. Later on, I moved out of the family home. Because of this, my father has always resented me deeply, believing that I brought shame upon the He family, to the point that he simply refuses to acknowledge me as his son. I have plenty to deal with at my own company too, so one thing led to another, and I rarely go back home. On the rare occasions I do return, it mostly ends in arguments, leaving the whole family feeling miserable.”

Song Li was stunned listening to him. He never expected He Muyan’s situation with his family to be like this. No wonder he had always been so aloof and cold, throwing himself into work with almost obsessive dedication, it turned out his family background was the reason after all.

He suddenly felt a pang of heartache for him, squeezing his hand tightly, “It’s alright, you have me now.”

He Muyan held his hand in return, sliding his fingers through the gaps between his until their fingers were tightly intertwined. “That’s right, I have you now.”

Song Li bit his lip, and for some reason, acting on a sudden impulse, he unexpectedly reached out, took He Muyan’s hand, and placed it against his own stomach.

Under He Muyan’s surprised gaze, his face flushed red as he whispered softly, “And the baby too.”

He Muyan froze for a moment as a flicker of delight flashing through his eyes as his hand instinctively tightened around Song Li’s. “Lili, do you mean… you’re willing to keep this child?”

Song Li rarely saw him lose control of his emotions like this and found it quite novel. He deliberately slowed down his tone, speaking word by word, “If I didn’t plan to keep it, I wouldn’t have come back with you today.”

He Muyan seemed deeply thrilled. He gently stroked Song Li’s lower abdomen with his large hand, extremely cautious, as if terrified that the slightest carelessness might hurt him.

Song Li watched as he kept his head lowered, his long, thick, jet-black eyelashes trembling painfully like cicada wings soaked by rain. Only after a long while did he hear him say in a low voice, “Lili, that’s truly wonderful.”

A sour feeling welled up in Song Li’s heart, and he reached out to cup his face, “Don’t get emotional just yet, we’re not done talking.”

He Muyan’s pitch-black pupils trembled slightly and was filled with a bit of confusion.

Song Li let out a breath and asked him in a heavy voice, “I remember before we went to get our marriage license, I asked you why you were in such a hurry to get married. Your answer back then was that your family was pressuring you. But your relationship with your family is already so strained. Knowing what you’re like, why would you care what they think?”

He Muyan frowned slightly, as if trying to recall, “It’s a long story. I did have an arranged fiancé of sorts, though calling him my fiancé would be a bit of a stretch. It was nothing more than a joke the elders made during business dinners. It just so happened that he and I grew up together and were similar in age, so they often brought it up as a casual joke. Over time, everyone seemed to take it as the truth.”

As Song Li listened to him, his hands clutched tighter and tighter.

He Muyan continued, “I remember it was right around the time I graduated from university. Under pressure from the people around us, we dated briefly for a period. During that time, my company had just gotten on track, and I was busy around the clock, completely unable to attend to someone by my side. So, he got angry, tearfully accusing me of not being serious about dating him at all. After that, he disappeared from my life. Only later did I find out that he had gone abroad.”

“Then came the first half of this year. Perhaps hearing the news from his uncle that the kid was returning to the country, my father somehow recalled the marriage agreement again. He called me for several days straight, urging me to go home and discuss it. I was thoroughly annoyed. It was around that time that I happened to meet you at a bar. I thought you were wonderful, and we seemed like a really good match. By then, I had already established myself in my career and was at the age where I was ready to settle down, so everything that followed just happened naturally.”

After listening to him finish, Song Li only found it absurd and surreal. If he weren’t the other party involved in this matter, there was no way he could ever believe these words.

Who would treat such a major life event as marriage so lightly and get it done like child’s play?

He Muyan would.

Song Li didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, momentarily unsure whether to say he was too carefree or that he simply never took this matter to heart at all.

Not knowing what his reaction meant, He Muyan asked him softly, “Lili, is there anything else you want to ask?”

Song Li raised his head to look at him, “One more question.”

He Muyan nodded, “What is it?”

Song Li let out a breath, “That arranged fiancé… did you ever like him?”

He Muyan didn’t expect that to be what he wanted to ask. His expression faltered for a moment, and a moment later, he let out a rather sarcastic laugh, “What is ‘like’? What I felt for him was nothing more than the affection of growing up together as children. When it comes down to it, the farce between us was nothing more than a bargaining chip the older generation wanted to use for business transactions.”

Having finally received the answer he had been waiting for, Song Li felt, for a fleeting moment, as though his heart might burst from beating so violently. His chest felt heavy and painfully sour, leaving him deeply uncomfortable.

He simply let his body slump limply against He Muyan, murmuring in a sweat, “That’s wonderful… so things between you two back then weren’t at all like what Pei Yuan said… that’s wonderful…”

The hand with which He Muyan was stroking his hair paused, “How do you know his name is Pei Yuan?”

Song Li snapped back to reality and felt there was no longer any need to hide it, “What do you think?”

He Muyan lifted his chin and looked straight into his eyes, “You know Pei Yuan?”

Song Li gave a bitter smile and did not answer him.

Seeing his reaction, He Muyan essentially understood everything. The coldness in his eyes deepened as he lowered his voice, “He came looking for you.”

Song Li turned his face away, letting silence serve as his answer.

He Muyan let out a sigh, seemingly understanding the whole picture now, “No wonder that friend of yours was so furious and said those baffling things. Song Li, you should have told me earlier instead of sulking all by yourself and running away from home.”

Song Li clenched his fists, feeling somewhat in the aggrieved, “At that time, I was just too angry and didn’t think that much at all. Besides…”

“Besides what?”

Song Li let out a breath, looking up at him, “Besides, I wasn’t sure what kind of relationship you two actually had. That Pei Yuan… he seems to know you very well. Much, much better than I do.”

“So what?” He Muyan held his hand, “Song Li, the Pei family and mine are prominent family friends. Pei Yuan and I grew up together from a young age, so it’s only normal that we’re a bit more familiar with each other. But so what? We’ve long ceased to have any connection; or rather, we never really had much of a connection to begin with.”

Song Li merely looked at him with reddened eyes. He Muyan sighed and gently wiped the corners of Song Li’s eyes with his fingers, “Song Li, I didn’t expect he would come looking for you. This was my oversight. But why didn’t you tell me right away, choosing instead to run away like this?”

Song Li sniffled, feeling a bit aggrieved, “I was scared…”

He didn’t dare say what he was scared of. He Muyan couldn’t bear to see him like this and pulled him into his arms, “It’s my fault for not giving you enough of a sense of security.”

Song Li closed his eyes, curling up in his embrace.

He Muyan gently stroked his back, whispering near his ear, “Don’t run off like this again next time. Your body is in a special condition right now, and I can’t rest easily at all when you’re out of my sight. Be good, alright?”

Song Li seemed unable to speak, only nodding vigorously.

The two had finally cleared up the misunderstanding between them, and the heavy stones in both their hearts settled down. Nestled in He Muyan’s arms, Song Li felt so warm, almost a little too warm, and couldn’t help shifting slightly. “What time is it? Is it time for dinner yet?”

He Muyan looked down at him, “Hungry?”

“Not really hungry, just suddenly craving something to eat.” As Song Li spoke, he placed his hand on his stomach.

He Muyan smiled softly, “Then it’s not you who’s hungry; it’s the little guy who’s hungry.”

Song Li blinked, suddenly realizing, “I see. No wonder I haven’t really felt hungry recently, but sometimes I just get this inexplicable craving to eat, turns out this little thing is causing trouble.”

He Muyan found Song Li exceptionally adorable in this state and couldn’t resist leaning down to kiss him.

“From now on, your body doesn’t just belong to you alone. You can’t be this careless anymore.”

Song Li retorted indignantly, “How was I being careless?”

He Muyan patted his head, “Pregnancy causes three years of brain fog.”

Furious, Song Li grabbed a pillow to throw at him, “You’re the foolish one! If you’re so capable, why don’t you get pregnant instead? I didn’t even want to be pregnant in the first place!”

Fearing that continuing the banter would genuinely upset him, He Muyan raised his hand to block the pillow and stepped off the bed with a chuckle, “I’ll go downstairs to see if Auntie Chen has come to make dinner. Lili, rest a bit longer, and I’ll call you once it’s ready.”

Lying in bed, Song Li gently patted his belly, “Then hurry up, the baby seems starving.”

He Muyan smiled, walked out of the bedroom, and softly closed the door behind him.

The moment the door shut, the smile on his face vanished completely. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

“Pei Yuan, let’s talk.”
