Even if it really was a bother, Ogiwara couldn’t be convinced unless he heard it from Minato himself. He said that to his brother, Masayuki, who told him to wait until Minato graduated. He was lectured earnestly about how important this time was for Minato. And so, Ogiwara decided to wait until spring—or perhaps Minato would reach out to him before then. He hoped, albeit faintly, that Minato would contact him.
“But even when spring came, there was no contact. Your phone, emails, and apartment were all… unreachable. Inquiries at the university were also futile. When I resorted to pressuring my brother for information, even the contact numbers he knew were no longer reachable.”
“Ogiwara-kun…”
“I can laugh at myself now, but even then, I still didn’t understand my own feelings. Despite having done something like that, I still thought that being with another man was impossible. I suppose it’s partly because I never really had any interest in romantic matters in the first place.”
For the next ten years, Ogiwara always had Minato in his heart. The reason he started taking up photography in his senior year of high school was because of Minato, and every time he saw a photo contest or exhibition, he unconsciously searched for Minato’s name.
He even considered hiring someone to look for Minato, but didn’t follow through because he didn’t understand why he wanted to do that in the first place. Still, his desire to see Minato never wavered, and that’s why the joy of their reunion and the indifference in Minato’s reaction were so shocking.
“Threatening you and having you do as I said… the only time I was satisfied was at the very beginning. You were so distant, even though you were close to me. Eventually, I realized you never even smiled in front of me anymore.”
Ogiwara let out a small sigh, his eyes shifting to the sea beyond the windshield.
“You smiled when you were on the phone with friends or with your students, and that was a shock to me. I started thinking about how I could make you smile in front of me too.”
“Is that why you asked me to go out and have fun… the way I wanted to?”
Ogiwara smiled, looking troubled, and nodded briefly. He said his next sentence almost like a sigh.
“In the end, you ended up getting hurt protecting me.”
“That’s not what we’re talking about here.”
“When I saw you lying unconscious at the bottom of the stairs, I was terrified. I didn’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t regained consciousness. That’s when I realized… back when I hurt my knee, you must have been even worse off. I wanted to punch myself for threatening you over my knee. But… when you gave me that ultimatum ten days ago, I repeated the same mistake. I couldn’t find any other way to keep you from leaving me.”
Ogiwara admitted that by that point, he had lost his confidence that Minato still liked him. He realized that Minato was only doing what he did because of the guilt over the knee incident from ten years ago.
“It was all just my selfishness. I made you go through so much, and in the end, I caused you a lot of pain. So, I should be the one to pay the compensation.”
“Th-that’s not necessary! Because I…-“
Minato flinched and shook his head, but he couldn’t continue after that. Looking down at the confused Minato, Ogiwara smiled wryly.
“I thought you’d say that. So, I don’t intend to force anything on you. But if you ever find yourself in trouble or need something, I want you to contact me anytime. I’ll never change my phone number.”
“…Ogiwara-kun?”
“I won’t contact you, and I won’t show up in front of you. I swear I won’t come near you without your permission. So, there’s just one thing I want to ask. I can’t easily give up, so can I continue loving you as I do now?”
His gaze, fixed intently, looked almost as though he were praying for something. Still not fully understanding the situation, Minato opened his mouth.
“You said you love me… what about your girlfriend, the one you’re living with?”
“I don’t have anyone like that. It’s not something to brag about, but I’ve never had anyone close enough to live together with or have a long-lasting relationship. I guess I’m too indifferent and not suited for being a boyfriend.”
Ogiwara shrugged with a self-deprecating smile, and Minato pressed on.
“Irino-kun said your girlfriend is beautiful, and your uncle is jealous of her.”
“That was just a joke. He was just saying that casually.”
“But when I said it, you didn’t deny it, did you?”
“Back then, I still believed that you liked me, Minato-sensei. But since you kept running away, I thought maybe if I said something like that, it would make you jealous… I really was just an idiot, wasn’t I?”
Ogiwara muttered as he held his forehead. He then suddenly looked at Minato with a serious expression.
“I’ll confess, but there were a fair number of people who came onto me in the past, and I never had trouble finding someone to casually have fun with. Nakamori-sensei knew about that. I’d been complicating things between him and Yuki-san for such a long time with my habit of teasing people.”
It seems that ‘Nakamori-sensei’ referred to Ogiwara’s mentor and Yuki’s husband, a professional photographer. Ogiwara, now also a professional photographer, had been studying under him since his university days.
“Thanks to that, now the two of them, as a couple, use me for fun. I was frequently used as a pawn in the last job too.”
“I see. I get it…”
That’s why Nakamori Yuki feels comfortable with Ogiwara. At the back of his mind, Minato barely manages to come to terms with it when Ogiwara speaks with a look of inquiry.
“Minato-sensei. Did you perhaps, even a little bit, care about me?”
Without thinking, Minato nods.
“I… really, did care. I thought it was impossible for you to get involved with me while you have a live-in lover, but I didn’t want to be apart from you. When you were kind, I hoped that… but then I thought you were just playing around with me for a temporary fix.” The words simply fall out of his mouth, almost without conscious thought.
Waiting for something that should have ended getting closer and closer. The wait was painful. Despite deciding to end it himself, it still felt agonizing, and he constantly felt the pain of being alone.
It felt like it was the same as ten years ago, but now it felt even emptier inside. He wondered how long it would take to get used to the pain and whether he would ever get used to it. He felt desperate, thinking it would take years—perhaps even more than that.
Unstoppable words are fragments of honesty that Minato had never expressed. Each one he lets out feels like the frozen feelings in his heart are slowly melting away, and he lets out a small breath. His back was suddenly gently caressed and he was softly pulled closer to Ogiwara.
With a faint sound, his right forehead touches a resilient fabric. When he raises his head, he meets Ogiwara’s eyes up close.
“…If you don’t want to, just push me away.”
The low voice resonates in his ear. At the end of the arm that wraps around Minato’s back, the palm holds Minato’s shoulder gently.
Somehow, Minato has ended up being enclosed in Ogiwara’s arms.
“Tell me the answer to the question I asked earlier… Is it alright if I continue to love you, Minato-sensei?”
Without thinking, Minato nods. He didn’t even realize the forehead that moved up and down was rubbing against Ogiwara’s shoulder.
“Is it not annoying for you, to have me do this?”
Again, Minato nods. Each time, Ogiwara’s arms grow stronger.
“Do you… not hate me, Minato-sensei?”
Without hesitation, Minato nods. For some reason, he couldn’t think of expressing it in words.
Silence falls as if creating a gap. With his head held by the palm that had been embracing Minato’s shoulder, he is pulled into a deep embrace by Ogiwara.
Minato is the one being embraced, yet for some reason, it felt as though he was clinging to Ogiwara, and he couldn’t shake the feeling.
“Minato-sensei… will you, at least, still like me a little?”
The voice he heard didn’t sound like a question.
Without being able to say anything, Minato lifted the hand that had been resting on the seat. He gently tugged at Ogiwara’s sleeve and nodded strongly once again.
There was a sense of relief nearby, a soft exhale. The fingers that had been pressing on Minato’s head moved and gently gripped his hair, and then, as though deciding something, Ogiwara spoke.
“May I kiss you, Sensei?”
This time, his question sounded more like a plea.
Minato nodded, slowly raising his face. When their eyes met from such a close distance, he felt Ogiwara’s warm lips brush against his before he even realized it. The kiss was gentle, first once, then twice, then a third time. Ogiwara’s hand caressed Minato’s temple and touched his forehead before eventually pulling away.
“…Won’t you say that you love me too?”
At the final question, Minato let out a small breath, swallowing. He gently parted his lips, ready to confess.
