“Is it okay if we go to the beach?”

As Ogiwara said this, he got into the car that had been parked in the parking lot.

Since their reunion, Minato had ridden in this car countless times, but this was the first time he had been asked permission about the destination. Surprised by this, Minato silently nodded.

After that, the car became quiet. As Ogiwara drove with his usual skilled handling of the steering wheel, he occasionally glanced at the passenger seat. It seemed as though he was making sure Minato was there.

The car passed through the night streets and soon reached the coastal road. Minato wondered if it was the same road they had driven on during their reunion, but it was hard to tell in the dark.

Looking ahead, all Minato could see was the road stretching in front of him and the coastline. The scenery seemed monotonous in the darkness, and as he stared at it, the words he had heard at the coffee shop earlier began to resurface one by one.

If he were to fit those scattered pieces back into place, would a picture begin to emerge, like a jigsaw puzzle? He thought this, but his mind wasn’t working clearly.

The car, twisting along a narrow road, stopped at a wide shoulder by the coast. Before them, stretched a sandy beach. Beyond that, the dark ocean. A crescent moon high in the sky shone brighter than expected, casting light on the surface of the sea.

“About the conversation…”

Minato started to speak but then fell silent. Just as Ogiwara had once said, he realized that he had only been the one asking questions.

When he turned to look at Ogiwara, he saw him smiling softly. Ogiwara was looking at him, resting his elbow on the steering wheel.

It was a genuine smile that Minato hadn’t seen since their reunion. Minato felt his own expression soften as he thought this.

“Um… I’m sorry for always pushing you.” Although he said this humbly, it seemed that Ogiwara smiled again.

Even with the lights off, there was still a faint glow in front of the driver’s seat. Combined with the moonlight, Ogiwara’s expression was clearly visible.

“Well, the thing is… I think it will only sound like an excuse to you, Minato-sensei… but is it still okay to tell you the truth?”

“When we broke up, I was the one doing all the talking, so I’ll listen to anything you have to say.”

“Thank you. Then, here.” Ogiwara handed him an envelope, which was the alimony that had been given to him. Minato noticed that the wrapping had not been opened, and there were no signs of it being disturbed.

“I’m returning this. I really can’t accept it.”

“Ogiwara-kun, but—”

“The injury to my right knee was the result of an accident. I’ve thought that way since ten years ago, and it is indeed what happened. However, I did use it against you as a form of threat, knowing that it was something you were concerned about. That’s the truth. So, first of all, I want to apologize for that. I’m really sorry.”

After saying all this in one breath, Ogiwara bent deeply, lowering his head in a profound apology.

The sincerity of his apology reached Minato. Even so, unable to remain silent, he opened his mouth.

“Even so, it’s clear that I’m partly to blame. So, you don’t have to apologize that much.”

“I’ve been treated so well by you after the accident. I think it was more than enough, probably even too much. So, I don’t want you to feel guilty about it anymore.”

Minato, unable to either accept or refuse the envelope that was pressed on him again, hesitated.

Then why, he wondered, did Ogiwara keep bringing up his right knee? Why had he even resorted to threatening him and chasing after him?

Leaving the envelope on the space between the passenger and driver seats, Ogiwara gave a wry smile. It was as if he had read Minato’s thoughts.

“I thought that unless I used that against you, you’d run away from me again.”

“Eh?”

“When we accidentally reunited during the arranged marriage meeting, you pretended not to know me. I thought maybe you didn’t want to see me at all. I wondered if you really didn’t want to be involved with me that badly.”

“That’s not—” 

Minato reflexively shook his head, but part of what Ogiwara said was true. At that time, he had tried to avoid being seen, hoping to get through the situation without recognizing Ogiwara.

“It was shocking to me… I…- I missed you all this time,” Ogiwara said quietly.

The words made Minato’s heart race. As he looked up from where he had been unconsciously staring down, his eyes met Ogiwara’s, and by then, he couldn’t look away anymore.

“I even asked Nana to find out where you worked and waited for you. But you still avoided me, so I decided I wouldn’t let you get away. Minato-sensei, when it came to me, you always gave in first, didn’t you?” Ogiwara said. It seemed that he never expected to be rejected.

“It’s like a child’s selfishness. But I couldn’t let you go, and when I was close to you and could feel your warmth, I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to touch you. The more you resisted, the angrier I got. So I used my right knee as the most effective way to force you. I knew that would make it so you couldn’t refuse.”

Minato was stunned by his self-deprecating words. He had never imagined that Ogiwara was thinking like that.

“I know I don’t have the right to say this, but just let me say it once… Minato-sensei, I love you. I think I’ve probably loved you since high school.”

“Misunderstood?” Ogiwara hesitated for a moment before replying, his voice low.

“I believed that you’re mine, Minato-sensei, so I thought I could do whatever I wanted with you. I wouldn’t let anyone else have you, and I wouldn’t let anyone else do anything with you.”

“……”

A shiver ran through Minato, as if his whole body had gone numb from the hesitation in Ogiwara’s voice. He even held his breath, staring at the young man sitting in the driver’s seat.

“I wanted to know what kind of person your friends were, and every time I was treated like a minor, I got frustrated because I felt left out… I heard that you were meeting someone at night, so I secretly went to check. I saw you kissing a man I didn’t know, and I completely lost control—eventually, I couldn’t stop myself, and I forcefully did ‘that’ to you.”

Minato, who had stopped breathing, shifted his gaze to the windshield, and Ogiwara continued as if confessing.

“…When my head finally cooled down, you were limp in my arms. I panicked and tried to call an ambulance, but you stopped me. So, I went to the pharmacy to buy medicine, thinking I could at least help that way. When I returned, the room was empty, and I freaked out, wondering where you had gone in that condition. I rushed to your apartment.”

“I waited until morning, but you didn’t come back. When I tried calling you, I couldn’t get through. I couldn’t ignore the persistent calls from my brother anymore at the time, so I answered, and he immediately yelled at me. Then, he told me that I was a bother to you and that I should never come near you again.”
