“Hosokawa-sensei! Is it okay if I talk to you for a moment?”
Minato, who had just finished answering a barrage of questions after class, turned around immediately when he heard the voice calling out to him as he was about to leave the classroom.
“Sure, but what’s up? The next class is about to start, you know?”
“Yeah, I’ll be back soon. Um, I brought this over from Yuki-chan. She said to give it to you.”
Irino, with his usual carefree attitude, handed over what seemed to be an envelope with a letter. Minato hesitated for a moment before taking it, but Irino pressed it into his hand.
“You know, the other day I gave Yuki-chan the stuff you wanted me to pass along, right? This is the thank you note for that.”
“…A thank you note?”
“Yeah. It’s a thing of adult common sense, apparently. Anyway, I’m heading back to class now.”
Irino stretched his neck as if noticing the time on the clock in the classroom, then quickly darted back inside.
Left alone in the hallway, Minato let out a short sigh.
He wasn’t in charge of the last class of the day that was about to start. However, he still needed to prepare a quiz for tomorrow, so it would be a while before he could go home.
In any case, work came first. Switching gears, Minato placed the envelope into his personal clear folder and quickly headed towards the staff room.
It would soon be ten days since he had told Ogiwara that it was over.
The daily routine that had returned as if nothing had happened was calm and uneventful. In the mornings, he left his apartment while checking the time, blended into the crowd, and took the usual train to work. After finishing work for the day, he would take the train back, stop by the store, and return to his apartment. Once home, he’d finish any work he brought back and go to bed early. It was a repetitive cycle.
Ogiwara had left nothing behind in Minato’s apartment, and Minato hadn’t prepared anything for Ogiwara, either. After he had cleared out the items he had sent over on his return from the apartment, all traces of the days spent with Ogiwara had vanished.
There had been no word from Ogiwara. Minato had learned from Irino’s chatter that Ogiwara had finished his work here and had quickly returned to the town where he lived.
―――I wonder if Ogiwara will come back here again. Or rather, don’t you hang out with him, Hosokawa-sensei?
Every time Minato was asked that, he would always give a vague answer. Perhaps because of that, recently Irino had stopped mentioning Ogiwara’s name. Most likely, that’s how memories gradually fade into the past.
After finishing the quiz questions in the staff room, Minato transferred the data into the proper format and saved it. He printed the necessary number of copies for tomorrow’s class plus a few extra. When he placed them into the locked drawer, the workday was finally over.
Before preparing to leave, he took the envelope out of the clear folder. The writing on the front caught his eye: “To Minato-sensei,” written in neat handwriting.
Since he had occupied her apartment for ten days, Minato had entrusted Irino with a small token of thanks and an apology for Nakamori Yuki.
Inside the envelope was a card. On it, adorned with cherry blossoms in a spring-like design, was a message in the same handwriting as the address: “I’ll be waiting outside around the time you finish work today.”
“……Huh?” Minato glanced at the card again, surprised by the abrupt message. He couldn’t believe it, but the writing remained unchanged, and he quickly checked the time. — It was already about fifteen minutes past the end of the workday.
“Just as expected…”
His reflexive thought was whether lovers end up resembling each other. Though the methods were different, in the sense that both had created situations where Minato couldn’t escape, it was the same as Ogiwara.
As much as he wanted to avoid it, Nakamori Yuki probably didn’t know anything about this. Once that thought crossed his mind, he couldn’t bring himself to ignore it.
Feeling half nervous and half resigned, Minato got ready and went outside.
She was leaning against a building near the entrance of the cram school, waiting for him. Her outfit—jeans, a shirt, and a jacket—was casual, yet the soft colors and style gave off a distinctly feminine vibe.
When she smiled and waved, calling, “Minato-sensei!” there was no choice but to hurry over to her. As he approached, slightly out of breath, she looked up at him with an untroubled expression.
“You’ve finished work for the day. Where can we go? Are you hungry, sensei?”
“Not really. I had a light meal in the afternoon… What about you, Nakamori-san?”
“I ate already too. In that case, how about something sweet? You’re okay with that, right, sensei?”
It was said casually but with strong insistence, and Minato nodded without resistance. For now, anywhere other than the coffee shop right in front of them would be fine.
“The place is so close, shall we walk?” she suggested, and Minato agreed. They walked for a few minutes to a small coffee shop. It was a relatively new place, located in the opposite direction of the station.
She didn’t seem to be a first-timer, as she went straight to the window-side seat at the back of the shop without hesitation. After she ordered without even looking at the menu, Minato followed suit and ordered a coffee.
