The happiest person about the two dads returning was Su Youli. That evening, when Pei Yi came to pick up his nephew after work, the little guy, whose face was flushed from playing with Dad, came over and grabbed Pei Yi’s pant leg.
“Uncle Pei, my dad is back.”
Pei Yi pinched his cheek and played along. “Oh, where is he?”
The little guy ran off with a “heave ho” and rushed into the kitchen, pulling out Qin Kun, who was cooking.
“This is my big dad. My big dad is a great cook.”
Pei Yi nodded slightly at Qin Kun as a greeting, then deliberately asked, “Then do you have a little dad too?”
Su Youli thought Uncle Pei was very smart, but he hadn’t been able to show Uncle Pei his little dad. Little Dad was very tired from the flight and had just gone to the room to rest.
“Pei Yi, don’t leave. Stay for dinner.” Shen Minyan’s voice came from the kitchen.
It was common for the two families to visit each other for meals. Pei Yi immediately agreed and called Hua Zhao to tell her to come straight here after work.
Dinner time.
The Shen family’s dining room was packed. Shen Yan and Chu Ying were busy entertaining the guests. Shen Minyan was in the kitchen helping Qin Kun. The two children sat in their high chairs, already eating the steamed egg Qin Kun had made. At first, Chu Ying and Shen Minyan hadn’t quite agreed to let Qin Kun cook, but who made their little son a little foodie?
In Country D, seven days a week, he ate Qin Kun’s steamed egg four or five times. Because the little guy liked this dish, when Shen Minyan returned to China, he had specifically asked the family chef to learn it. The little guy ate it a few times. The chef uncle’s steamed egg tasted good, but not quite right.
When Qin Kun steamed eggs, he added a few shrimp, chopped not too finely, retaining a bit of texture, delicious and bouncy. There was no need to elaborate on how rich the dinner was. The menu had been planned a week in advance, plus two dishes Qin Kun made himself. During dinner, the little guy sat beside Su Siwen the whole time.
“Dad, this is so good. For you.” Every time the little guy ate something delicious, he would put a bite in Su Siwen’s bowl.
Siwen smiled and ate it. “Thank you, baby.”
The little guy didn’t forget Big Dad either. He put the garlic sprouts he didn’t like from his bowl into Qin Kun’s. “Dad, you eat too.”
Qin Kun was both amused and exasperated. He picked it up and ate it in one bite. “So I’m your food processor, is that it?”
The little guy grinned and got away with it.
After dinner, the little guy clung to Qin Kun, asking when he would accompany Dad to rehabilitation training.
Qin Kun picked him up. “After the New Year. I’ll definitely bring you along then.”
The little cub in his arms held out his little hand. “Kun Kun, pinky promise.”
The two pinky promised, and it was settled. He had been so excited all day that just half an hour after dinner, Su Youli fell asleep leaning against Su Siwen. Chu Ying looked at the time. It wasn’t even eight yet. Seeing Youyou sleeping so deeply, she was a little worried and tested his temperature with the back of her hand. Su Siwen was already used to the little guy getting sleepy easily. Qin Kun took the little guy and held him. The little guy in his arms had his eyes closed, long eyelashes, small hands on his chest, sleeping very obediently.
“He might be food-comatose. He ate two bowls of rice tonight, plus a buttered bun.”
Simply put, food coma. Su Siwen remembered when Youyou was younger; he often fell asleep at the table while eating. He couldn’t help but smile. Chu Ying found it funny just thinking about it. She reached out to take Youyou back to the room to sleep. Qin Kun didn’t object and handed the child to her. Just as he was about to let go, the little guy in his arms twisted, his little hands grabbing Qin Kun’s clothes, holding on tightly and refusing to let go.
Chu Ying looked at the little guy’s round little head. “You two sleep with Youyou tonight. Don’t go over there.”
Su Siwen didn’t agree immediately. He carefully observed Chu Ying’s expression. Chu Ying was much older than them, so she naturally knew what they were thinking. Su Siwen and Qin Kun had a rough youth, and their minds were more delicate and sensitive than ordinary people. She sat down beside Su Siwen, patted his knee, and looked into his eyes sincerely.
Su Siwen and Qin Kun’s backgrounds and experiences had made them accustomed to not relying on anyone. Even when others offered help, their first reaction wasn’t gratitude, but questioning whether the other party had ulterior motives. At every stage of their growth, they had walked it step by step on their own.
Facing Su Siwen’s somewhat puzzled expression, Chu Ying first smiled, glanced at her milky son, and said softly, “If someone else had found Youyou, they might be worth over a hundred million by now.”
Su Siwen: “…”
Chu Ying added, “I’ve never seen anyone as silly as you two.”
Qin Kun: “…”
Why did she suddenly start scolding people?
After she said this, Su Siwen actually smiled. “Maybe because we haven’t seen much of the world. To be honest, when we saw the card Brother Shen left us, my first reaction was to be startled. I felt that card was especially hot to the touch.”
Chu Ying smiled. Since birth, she had been surrounded by hypocritical and sycophantic people. Everyone who approached her had impure motives, all wanting to gain something from her. Her gaze moved between the two young men in front of her. Yes, only people as resilient and grounded as they could have raised Su Youli so well.
After spending a few hours together, the unfamiliarity and restraint gradually faded. Su Siwen hadn’t expected Youyou still couldn’t sleep independently and was a bit worried. He had heard that children who needed parents to sleep with them every day were mostly spoiled, and when they grew up, it would be hard for them to be independent, hesitant in doing things, and lacking in opinions.
Su Siwen paused, then decided to discuss this with Chu Ying. It was best to let Youyou sleep on his own as soon as possible. The little guy had been back at the Shen house for less than a year, and he was as good as a kitten, not naughty, not troublesome, simply too easy to care for. Who would be willing to let such a little one sleep alone and face a dark room by himself?
The parents discussed at the door of the children’s room. Shen Minyan had little say in raising the child. When the other three suggested letting the little guy try sleeping alone tomorrow, although his heart ached a little, he still steeled himself and nodded. He hoped the little guy wouldn’t cry tomorrow, or at least cry quietly. The little cub on the bed was sound asleep, not knowing at all what kind of life he would face starting tomorrow.
In the morning, the little cub on the bed turned over, his nose twitching. A very familiar smell. Dad’s smell. The little guy rolled into Dad’s arms, his furry head nudging Qin Kun awake. Qin Kun’s jet lag hadn’t worn off yet. He was terribly sleepy, his mind hazy. He probably wasn’t used to Beicheng’s weather either. His whole state was terrible.
But he was used to getting up early. He scooped up the little guy making mischief in his arms. “Youyou, good morning.”
Su Youli was very good. “Good morning, Kun Kun. Can we have noodles today?”
