“Liu Bingwei, again?”

As soon as the bell signaling the end of class rang, Fang Zhengwen looked toward Liu Bingwei, who was standing outside the classroom, with an annoyed expression.

Liu Bingwei, who strode in briskly with his backpack slung over his shoulder, shot back, “What? Is there some rule saying I can’t come here?”

“My juniors keep thinking you’re one of our seniors. You’re a student in the law department—what are you doing in the finance department?”

“It’s not like I came to see you.”

Acting as though he couldn’t care less, Liu Bingwei waved his hand dismissively and sat down in the empty seat in front of Zhou Shuyi.

“We’re all going to karaoke with the club. Wanna come?”

“Not interested.”

“I see. Then I won’t go either.”

When Zhou Shuyi stood up with his backpack, Liu Bingwei asked, “Where are you going?”

“Piano practice.”

“I’ll come with you.”

Saying that, he got up, slung an arm around Zhou Shuyi’s shoulder, and walked out of the classroom with him.

“Haah…”

Watching their backs disappear down the hall, Fang Zhengwen let out an involuntary sigh and shook his head.

If he remembered right, that guy had absolutely no interest in music—and every time he listened to Zhou Shuyi’s piano, he’d fall asleep. Yet he still went with him every single time.

Feelings are full of irrational things. Even doing something so foolish… that guy still looks happy.

“Gao Shide! I like you! I like you. Ever since you transferred here and we became friends… I’ve always liked you”

“I know.”

“You… knew? If you knew I liked you, then why didn’t you push me away? Watching me cling to you like an idiot — was that funny to you, Gao Shide?”

“I’ve always thought of you as a close friend.”

“But I don’t!”

“Zheyu, don’t force your feelings onto someone else. Love isn’t something you give expecting a return. I’m sorry if I made you misunderstand. I can’t return your feelings, but I do think of you as a real friend — someone I can talk to about anything. And I hope we can stay that way.”

Tears blurred everything before his eyes.

As if exhausting his strength could somehow purge the pain of rejection, Shi Zheyu couldn’t stop his legs from running wildly.

“Why not me? Why can’t it be me?”

The wind blew away his tears, leaving cold streaks on his cheeks. His throat burned as he gulped down the chill night air, screaming his frustration into it. And yet, his mind still clung to reason.

Gao Shide was right—feelings couldn’t be forced, couldn’t be imposed, and couldn’t be rewarded just by giving.

Thud!

Just as he was about to stumble, he crashed into someone rushing out from around the corner of a building.

Shi Zheyu fell to the ground. The other person didn’t fall but staggered back two steps, rubbing his forehead as he shouted angrily,

“Hey! Watch where you’re going!”

It was Liu Bingwei. Still rubbing his forehead, he lowered his hand—and finally looked at the person he’d bumped into. When he saw the tears streaming down Shi Zheyu’s face, he froze.

“Shi Zheyu… are you crying?”

“Leave me alone.”

“Pfft!”

Liu Bingwei couldn’t hold back a laugh, which only made the already-upset Zheyu even angrier.

“What the hell are you laughing at?”

“Sorry, sorry. I just remembered—you said that same thing at the event that night.”

―――“What’s wrong?”

―――“Just leave me alone.”

―――“If you’re that scared, why’d you even sign up for this? I’ve got an idea. How about we team up? Let’s go through it together. There are lots of prizes this time — it’d be a shame to leave empty-handed. You were about to say ‘leave me alone,’ weren’t you? Then give me twenty minutes instead — I promise we’ll make it through.”

―――“Fine. But if I say yes, your prize is mine too.”

―――“Deal! Now give me your hand — let’s go collect those stamps.”

―――“…Alright.”

Remembering that day, Shi Zheyu stood there dazed.

He’d originally joined the event because of Gao Shide, but somehow ended up teamed with Liu Bingwei instead. Without him, he probably wouldn’t have completed a single mission—he might not even have had the courage to turn back to the entrance.

Now, as he lay on the ground again, Liu Bingwei extended a hand toward him and said, “Give me your hand. There’s somewhere I want to take you.”

“Where to?”

“You’ll see when we get there.”

He gave a little beckoning wave with his outstretched hand and waited with a grin.

That gentle smile—like magic—swept away all the pain in an instant. Shi Zheyu reached out, took Liu Bingwei’s hand, and let himself be pulled up.

They went to the student bike parking area, where Liu Bingwei handed him a spare helmet. Shi Zheyu took it, climbed onto the back of the bike. They rode off, stopping in front of a building with a glowing ‘karaoke’ sign.

“Come on, let’s go in and sing! There’s no problem that can’t be solved with music and good food. And if it doesn’t work the first time, we’ll just eat again!”

Beaming, Liu Bingwei flashed a peace sign with his fingers. Then, without caring about Shi Zheyu’s protest, he went to the counter, rented a room, slung an arm around Zheyu’s shoulder, and led him inside.

They ordered a ridiculous amount of food, grabbed microphones, and sang their hearts out—loudly, off-key, and without a care in the world. Between songs and laughter, they dug into the food, the heavy air of sorrow gradually lifting, replaced by warmth and light.
