~The Bar
“Just my luck. Even my after-work drink gets interrupted.”
“Ow!”
Pei Shouyi peeled off the backing of a bandage and slapped it onto the back of Zhou Shuyi’s neck, where his necklace had cut the skin. The injured man yelped with his head bowed, and the one sitting beside him — Gao Shide — immediately glared at Pei Shouyi in displeasure.
“Hey! Don’t hit him so hard.”
“What, trying to show off your love or something?” Pei Shouyi narrowed his eyes at Gao Shide, who hadn’t taken his eyes off Zhou Shuyi since they sat down.
Instead of getting angry, Gao Shide simply placed a hand on Zhou Shuyi’s shoulder and smiled.
“Let me introduce you to your future ‘family member’, Zhou Shuyi.”
“Family?”
When Zhou Shuyi looked at Gao Shide with a puzzled expression, he glanced over at the man with the bad reputation among the students — the school doctor — and said, “My cousin, Pei Shouyi.”
“Cousin? Wait— he’s the guy who said he wanted to pursue you back then, and because of that…” Halfway through his sentence, embarrassment caught up to him, and his voice trailed off.
“Because of that, what? You got jealous?” Gao Shide leaned in close to Zhou Shuyi’s ear and asked in a low voice.
“…” Avoiding his gaze, Zhou Shuyi refused to meet the eyes of the man who’d hit the mark.
Watching the two of them drift into their own little world, Pei Shouyi made a face like he couldn’t stand it anymore. Muttering complaints under his breath, he put away the first-aid kit he’d fetched from the bar’s storeroom.
“Ugh, I’m sick of babysitting brats. Tonight’s on me — order whatever you want. Once you’re full, get out of here. Don’t get in the way of business.” With that, he stood up and headed toward the counter, first-aid kit in hand.
As Pei Shouyi’s back receded, Zhou Shuyi watched curiously.
“Business? That delinquent school doctor owns this place?”
“Yeah,” Gao Shide nodded, leaning back casually.
There was a time when even this small closeness had been impossible — but now, he could naturally step into Zhou Shuyi’s private space.
They say the distance between bodies mirrors the distance between hearts. Someday, Zhou Shuyi would be the only one allowed inside his heart…
“Why run a bar, though?”
Gao Shide shifted his gaze from his lover’s face to his cousin chatting with the bartender at the counter, and sighed.
“He comes from what people call a ‘family of doctors.’ His father’s a physician, his mother’s a hospital director. He was groomed to be an elite from the time he was a kid. But his parents never cared about anything except his grades. They basically had him just to make sure someone would inherit the family legacy. So, after he got his medical license, he cut ties with them and became a high school doctor. Later, after some more drama, he transferred to our university.”
When they were kids, Gao Shide used to envy how talented Pei Shouyi was. But as they grew up, that envy turned into pity.
A cold family, suffocating expectations, parents who judged worth only by performance… All of it slowly closed Pei Shouyi’s heart, pushing him behind an invisible wall. And one day, the delicate balance inside him broke after years of strain.
―――“Shide, I don’t know how to feel happy anymore.”
At first, Gao shide thought he was just in a bad mood. It wasn’t until the diagnosis of emotional disorder came that he understood. He finally realized why Pei Shouyi always listened so intently whenever he talked about being happy, or sad, or embarrassed, or afraid.
――—“Why?”
―――Shide, why do you feel happy?
―――Shide, why do you feel sad?
―――Why do you feel embarrassed?
―――Why are you afraid?
―――Why? Why? Why? Why…
In Pei Shouyi’s world, all emotion had been cut off from consciousness — he couldn’t feel anything at all. That’s why he clung to the only cousin who didn’t push him away, who patiently answered every question — desperate to understand human emotion, desperate not to become a complete outcast.
“I see…”
Zhou Shuyi nodded, glancing toward Pei Shouyi with newfound understanding.
“He’s had it rough too, huh.”
“You both have. You and him are my precious family.”
Gao Shide smiled and pressed a light kiss to his lover’s cheek.
“You—” Zhou Shuyi’s face flushed as he covered the cheek that had just been kissed and glared at the man beside him.
“Embarrassed? Then kiss me back — that’ll make us even.”
“Like hell. I’ll still lose in the end, won’t I?”
“Then…” Gao Shide thought seriously for about two seconds, then—
Chuu!
He stole another quick kiss, wearing a triumphant grin.
“Leave it to me. You just stay right here and be good.”
“Gao. Shi. De!” Zhou Shuyi’s face turned crimson in an instant, his voice low and trembling with flustered fury as he called out his lover’s name.
Meanwhile, Pei Shouyi placed the first-aid kit on the counter and ordered a drink.
“The usual.”
The young bartender glanced over at the two men flirting in the corner and teased, “What’s wrong? Watching those two lovebirds makes you realize you’re just a lonely middle-aged man?”
Pei Shouyi didn’t answer. He took the glass and swallowed the fifteen-proof liquor in one go.
“I’m jealous,” the bartender said, wrinkling his nose wistfully before downing a tequila shot himself. “I wanna fall in love too.”
