~Ximending
When the sun went down, the sunlight was replaced by the glow of neon signs, one by one illuminating the city.
This was Taipei’s most fashionable district—the center of trends and dreams, where countless people had been scouted off the street and turned overnight into superstars.
Walking alone across the pedestrian bridge of Ximending, Gao Shide looked down at the steady flow of cars beneath him.
Bzz, bzz!
His phone vibrated in the pocket of his jeans. Pulling it out, he glanced at the message glowing on the screen.
[Where are you? There’s something I want to talk about.]
He hesitated for a few seconds, unsure whether to reply. In the end, he pressed the side button and left it on read. With the darkened phone still in his hand, he lowered his gaze and kept walking toward the other end of the bridge.
“Why aren’t you answering me, Gao Shide? You really are avoiding me.”
An irritated voice came from behind him. Startled, Gao Shide stopped and turned around—only to see Zhou Shuyi standing there.
Ever since witnessing Shi Zheyu’s confession outside the lecture hall, Zhou Shuyi had been following Gao Shide. His plan had been simple: once he got a reply revealing Gao Shide’s location, he’d pretend to have ‘just happened’ to run into him there.
But when Gao Shide ignored his message completely, Zhou Shuyi panicked and hurried after him—his frustration spilling out the moment he caught up.
“So that’s it? You got tired of making me your errand boy and decided to ditch me?”
“I deleted the video. If you don’t believe me, check for yourself.” Assuming Zhou Shuyi was still talking about ‘that’ video, Gao Shide held out his phone to prove it. But Zhou Shuyi slapped his outstretched hand away.
“You only threatened me with that video because you were worried about me after I got rejected, right? You said if I ‘won,’ I could earn parole—trying to push my feelings in that direction. That’s what you meant, isn’t it?” The directness of the accusation made Gao Shide avert his eyes guiltily. He looked down at the stream of cars below the bridge.
“Don’t romanticize it. I just wanted to be friends with you. That’s all… If I could do that—”
If I could do that, then before graduation, before leaving Taiwan for America with my mother, I could finally put an end to these feelings… as a friend.
“Tell me,” Zhou Shuyi asked quietly, “does that ‘luck’ still belong to me?”
“What are you talking about?” Confused, Gao Shide turned back to face him.
“That day in the infirmary, I said that anyone loved by you was lucky. But later, when you thought I was asleep, you whispered in my ear… that the luck had always been mine.”
―――“When I said I liked you, it wasn’t a joke. When I said I’d break you two apart and take you for myself, that wasn’t a lie either. You once told me that the person I love is lucky—but unfortunately, you’ll never know the truth. Because that luck has always belonged to you. Zhou Shuyi… I love you”
Zhou Shuyi stepped forward quickly, grabbed Gao Shide by the collar, and yanked him close.
“Gao Shide, answer me! Does that luck still belong to me?”
“Let me tell you… I don’t like you that way…” Gao Shide’s voice trembled with pain. No matter how hard he tried, his feelings would never be accepted. He was already shattered. Too afraid to see disgust reflected in the other man’s eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to look up.
“Do you really think I could fall for a guy?” No matter how many showers Zhou Shuyi took, the turmoil in his mind couldn’t be washed away.
No matter what he did, he kept thinking of him. Everywhere he went, he saw someone who looked like him from behind. Every moment they’d spent alone together replayed in his mind over and over again.
“It’s because it’s you. I don’t like men… but I couldn’t help falling for you.”
He finally realized—long before his rational mind would admit it—that he had already seen Gao Shide as more than a friend.
Gao Shide lifted his face, closed his eyes, and placed his hands gently on Zhou Shuyi’s shoulders. Then he slowly pushed him back and stepped away.
“If you’re saying this just to mess with me, I’m not falling for it.”
“I’m not joking. I’m serious.”
Zhou Shuyi caught his arm and confessed again, earnestly.
The one hearing it—eyes red, lips trembling—stared back and said, “You’re in love with Jiang Yuxin, aren’t you? If you want to bully me, fine. But don’t toy with my feelings.”
Ao Shide had realized back in middle school that what he felt for Zhou Shuyi wasn’t friendship. At first, he thought it was just because he didn’t want to be forgotten again after Zhou Shuyi not remembering him once.
But as he grew older, he came to understand—this was love between men, a love that would never be accepted. So he buried it deep in his heart. When he was alone, he would take out the old photo hidden in his closet — the one of him and Zhou Shuyi standing together on the podium — and smile at it in secret.
“Why won’t you believe me?” Looking into Gao Shide’s tearful eyes, Zhou Shuyi felt his heart break.
Because of his own hesitation, his own insensitivity, and Gao Shide’s habitual fear and rejection, even if he said “I love you” now, it was too late.
Gripping the necklace around his neck, Zhou Shuyi yanked it off with all his strength. The chain snapped, cutting the back of his neck and drawing blood, but he didn’t care. On that noisy bridge above the cars, he shouted, “Do I have to destroy everything before you’ll believe me?”
But Gao Shide only sighed bitterly, forcing a wry smile.
“What’s the point of throwing away your lucky charm?”
Every time the distance between them closed, he hoped something might change—but disappointment always followed.
Staying friends was the closest they could ever be. Anything more was impossible.
As tears streamed down Gao Shide’s cheeks, a memory flickered in Zhou Shuyi’s mind — of a boy sitting at the end of a corridor, crying with his knees drawn up.
That boy had refused the handkerchief Zhou Shuyi offered him, not because he was ungrateful, but because he didn’t want a stranger to see his tears… or his weakness.
Turning away, Zhou Shuyi gripped the bridge railing, stepped up onto the guardrail, and shouted down to the traffic and the bustling crowd below: “My name is Zhou Shuyi, and I love Gao Shide! I love him, love him, love him! He’s the one I love most in the entire world!”
Before Gao Shide could react, Zhou Shuyi jumped down from the railing — straight into his arms — wrapping his arms around his neck and pressing his warm, trembling lips against his.
In that moment, time stopped — as if the film reel of their story had frozen in a single frame.
All thoughts vanished. Zhou Shuyi kissed him again and again, their shared warmth flowing from their lips straight to their hearts.
Then, finally, Gao Shide lifted his hands, placed them gently around Zhou Shuyi’s back, closed his eyes — and returned the kiss, hot and clumsy and desperate, a kiss he had been waiting to give for years.
When they finally broke apart, breathless, Zhou Shuyi smiled and teased softly: “Was that your first kiss?”
“No,” Gao Shide said, shaking his head.
“Then who was it with?” There was a flash of possessiveness in Zhou Shuyi’s voice.
“Once, I saved an idiot who was drowning. When I pulled him out of the pool… we accidentally kissed.”
“That doesn’t count. Your first real kiss should’ve been with me.”
Recalling that poolside accident, Gao Shide’s face flushed red. Zhou Shuyi looped his arms around his neck again—
—and kissed him one more time.

Who Did You Fall in Love With?
If I fall in love with someone of the same sex, then I’ll take responsibility for it myself.
Because it was you—no matter how much I wanted to run, there was no escaping it.
