To find the clues and collect the stamps that proved their mission’s success, they had no choice but to enter the infirmary — ranked the most terrifying place on campus, even above the bathrooms, among the school’s ‘Seven Mysteries’.

“Let’s just skip this place and move on.”

In the faint light, Zhou Shuyi continued searching the metal cabinets filled with gauze and medicine, but his voice trembled as he spoke.

Gao Shide, standing before a bookshelf, was looking for clues that might be hidden between the volumes.

“No. We can’t move on unless we clear this one.”

Bzzt!

The moment he said it, the breaker suddenly tripped, and the only light in the room went out. At the same time, the stainless-steel door slammed shut with a metallic clank.

“Wahhh!”

With a cry of fear, Zhou Shuyi rushed to the door and grabbed the handle, trying to force it open from the inside. But he pulled too hard and lost his balance— falling backward straight into Gao Shide’s arms.

Gao Shide, who had stepped forward to check on him, looked down at the ripped-off door handle and at the man now in his arms. A flicker of unease passed through his eyes, but his lips curved up in a faint smirk.

“You’ve really done it this time, Zhou Shuyi.”

“…”

The culprit — Zhou Shuyi himself — could only stare in shock at the handle lying on the floor.

A few minutes later—

“Hellooo! Is anyone there? Anybody nearby?”

Zhou Shuyi pounded on the door, shouting as loud as he could in hopes of attracting the attention of other participants. If someone heard them, maybe they’d be rescued from the locked health room.

Meanwhile, Gao Shide sat cross-legged on a chair, watching his partner’s futile efforts. On the desk beside him, a spare candle he’d found in a cabinet flickered to life, its soft orange glow easing the creepy atmosphere a little.

“You’re not tired from yelling that long? Here, have some water.” 

He unscrewed a bottle of mineral water and held it out to Zhou Shuyi, who, after one last frustrated kick at the door, stomped over to the desk, snatched the bottle, took a gulp— and snapped irritably:

“It’s better than doing nothing! Damn it, why does a nurse’s office even have iron bars on the windows? What if there’s a fire? You know this place well enough — can’t you do something?”

The fear that had overwhelmed him when the door first locked was now fading. Watching Gao Shide calmly pull candles and bottled water from drawers and cabinets — as if he’d done it a hundred times — somehow made him feel safer.

“What do you expect me to do? We handed over our phones to the staff before the event. How am I supposed to call for help?”

Gao Shide shrugged, speaking in an almost lazy tone.

“A security guard might make rounds later. And if not, we’ll just spend the night here. Pei Shouyi comes in early; he’ll unlock the door in the morning.”

“…”

Zhou Shuyi glared at him — clearly unimpressed by his composure. He screwed the cap back on and set the bottle down, then started searching the room again by candlelight for any possible way out.

“Oh! A computer! There’s a laptop here — maybe it’s connected to the internet. I can message Fang Zhengwen to come get us!”

Excited, he rushed over to the nurse’s desk and hit the power button. But the moment the screen lit up—

“Damn it! It needs a password…”

His brief excitement drained away. Slamming the lid shut in frustration, he turned toward Gao Shide, who was still sitting calmly.

Their stomachs growled — loudly enough to echo through the quiet room.

“Hungry?”

“I’m starving.”

Zhou Shuyi looked embarrassed but nodded honestly.

“Shouyi usually keeps some food around. Hold on.”

Gao Shide stood and walked toward the metal cabinet that stored medicine. As expected, on the lower shelf, he found a portable camp stove and some eco-friendly utensils. Then he approached the eerie human anatomy model, opened its abdominal cavity, and pulled out a pack of instant ramen hidden inside.

Returning to the desk, he set a pot on the portable stove, poured in noodles, seasoning packets, and bottled water, then turned the knob to adjust the flame — starting to cook what would soon be a comforting meal.

“You even know where the instant noodles are? You must be really close with that delinquent school doctor. Wait— don’t tell me he’s your crush?”

Zhou Shuyi dragged a chair over and sat opposite Gao Shide, eyeing him curiously as he stirred the noodles.

Gao Shide’s stunned expression only seemed to confirm his suspicion — though Zhou Shuyi himself didn’t notice the faint trace of jealousy in his own tone.

“It’s not like that…”

He’d barely gotten the words out before Zhou Shuyi’s nosy curiosity kicked into overdrive.

“Come on, I already told you I like Jiang Yuxin. So why can’t you tell me who you like? I swear I won’t tell anyone. How long have you liked them?”

“For a long time. It’s just that…”

Faced with this deep misunderstanding, Gao Shide sighed — a hint of irritation in his voice. Then, keeping his tone level, he decided to finally speak the truth he’d kept hidden for years.

“The person I like… is you.”

“Oh, good. For a second I thought— huh?”

Zhou Shuyi nodded in automatic agreement, then blinked and stared at him.

“Wait, me? You like me? That’s impossible.”

“Yeah… impossible.”

Gao Shide smiled faintly, but there was sadness in it. He’d known the answer all along — yet hearing it out loud still hurt.

“You’re kidding, right?”

“Of course. Don’t go pairing me up with Pei Shouyi on your own.”

“Jeez, fine, don’t tell me then.”

Satisfied that it was a joke, Zhou Shuyi leaned on his elbow, resting his chin in his hand, and stared at the pot now steaming gently on the desk.

“Just a bit longer. Once it boils, we can eat.”

“Okay.”

A few minutes later, the aroma of ramen filled the dim room.

Earlier, when the door first locked, Zhou Shuyi had been scared enough to want to run — but now, with the warmth of food, the glow of candlelight, and someone by his side, the fear had melted away. Darkness and ghosts didn’t seem so frightening anymore.

“Here. Eat.” Gao Shide lifted the pot, poured noodles and steaming broth into a bowl, and placed it before Zhou Shuyi, who immediately dug in with his chopsticks, savoring every bite.

While Zhou Shuyi slurped the noodles with obvious delight, he noticed Gao Shide, who had been busy earlier, quietly pouring himself some water. He paused and asked: “What about you?”

“I’m not hungry yet. You eat.”

“There’s only one serving of ramen?”

“You’re the one who’s hungry. Don’t worry about me — just eat.”

Zhou Shuyi gave him a sidelong glance, then picked up the bowl and moved his chair to sit beside him. “Let’s share.”

He set the bowl between them and handed over a pair of chopsticks.

“Better that we both eat a little than one of us eat everything.”

“It’s better for two friends to share than for one to starve, right? That’s what friends do — share the good and the bad.”
