“Friends…”

Gao Shide repeated the word softly, looking at Zhou Shuyi’s face.

―――Yes, if ‘lovers’ was impossible, then ‘friends’ was the only option left.

“You don’t want to?”

Zhou Shuyi, misinterpreting his silence as rejection, pouted and began to pull the bowl back.

“I do.”

Gao Shide caught his wrist, slid his chair closer, and set the bowl back between them.

Zhou Shuyi grinned, pointing his chopsticks at him.

“Just so you know, even between friends, competition’s important. I can’t keep losing to you.”

“You’ll never beat me. Because I’ll never give you the chance to win.”

Behind his gentle smile was a quiet determination — because staying at the top was the only way Zhou Shuyi would keep looking his way. Ever since that day in fifth grade, standing before the ranking board, Gao Shide had known: to catch this man’s attention, he had to stay number one. And he would keep winning — just to stay in that special place.

“Hmph! Let’s settle it with rock-paper-scissors. Winner eats.”

Zhou Shuyi raised his fist, eyes sparkling in challenge.

“Alright.”

Gao Shide smirked and lifted his hand.

Round 1: Rock vs. Scissors — Gao Shide wins.

“Tch. Again.”

Zhou Shuyi handed over the chopsticks reluctantly. Gao Shide took one bite, and the game continued.

Round 2: Scissors vs. Rock — Zhou Shuyi wins.

Round 3: Scissors vs. Paper — Gao Shide wins.

Round 4: Rock vs. Scissors — Gao Shide wins.

Round 5: Rock vs. Rock — Draw.

Round 6: Paper vs. Paper — Draw.

Round 7: Scissors vs. Scissors — Draw again…

Round 8: Rock vs. Rock — “Seriously, again?”

Round 9: Rock vs. Rock — “Ugh, this is getting ridiculous…”

Round 10: Rock vs. Paper — Zhou Shuyi wins!

“Ha!”

After five straight draws, Zhou Shuyi finally won — and burst out laughing. He snatched the chopsticks and took a big slurp of noodles.

As he ate the now slightly cooled ramen, his eyes drifted to Gao Shide’s face illuminated by candlelight — handsome, composed, and beautifully framed by the shadows. He realized he’d never really looked at him properly before. No wonder he always got so many chocolates on Valentine’s Day.

Good-looking, kind, dependable…

Just who, Zhou Shuyi wondered, was lucky enough to be loved by someone as perfect as Gao Shide?

Past Midnight―

It was past midnight. The night had grown deep, the candles had burned out, and both the infirmary and the hallway were swallowed in darkness.

“Think you’ll be able to sleep?”

Zhou Shuyi, afraid of the dark, glanced at the beds lined up on either side of the room. He swallowed hard and asked, “I… uh…”

Gao Shide, who had been busily preparing his bed, stopped moving. Sensing that Zhou Shuyi was afraid to sleep alone, he decided to play along.

“I can’t sleep… I’m too scared,” he said, feigning fear.

“You’re such a coward. Move your bed closer. Let’s talk for a bit.”

Zhou Shuyi exhaled quietly in relief and did as he was told. The two pushed their beds together, sat side by side, and started chatting about random things.

“If you don’t want to say who you like,” Zhou Shuyi said teasingly, “then at least tell me what kind of person they are. Their personality, what they look like, what they like — that sort of thing.”

“You’re really nosy, you know that?”

“If you think of me as a friend, then spill it.”

“That person is…”

Unable to resist the prompting, Gao Shide looked at Zhou Shuyi’s profile — illuminated faintly by the moonlight filtering through the window — and began to speak about the one he loved.

“They’re adorable. Some people think they’re narcissistic or arrogant, but to me… that’s part of their charm.”

The moonlight streamed through the slats of the window and the curtains, gently spilling across Zhou Shuyi’s face. It wasn’t bright enough to see clearly, but Gao Shide already knew every expression, every subtle movement by heart — etched into his memory over the years.

“You even like their flaws, huh? Sounds like you’re really in love.”

“Yeah… maybe I am.”

Gao Shide smiled faintly and looked away, his eyes holding countless secrets. His gaze swept across the dark infirmary as he continued softly.

“They’re proud and stubborn… but they care deeply for their friends. They’d sacrifice themselves for them.”

“So their strength is… their kindness, huh?”

Hearing that the person Gao Shide loved valued friendship like he did, Zhou Shuyi nodded and asked, “Aren’t you going to confess?”

“I don’t want to ruin the friendship I worked so hard to build.”

Zhou Shuyi heard the quiet sigh in his voice but pretended not to notice.

“I get it. I’m in a similar situation,” he said, giving Gao Shide a sleepy pat on the shoulder before lying down.

“I’ve already given up. But you… you’re still struggling, huh? If it ever gets too hard, just talk to me. I’ll listen, and I’ll keep your secret.”

―――“If you ever feel like crying, I’ll lend you my shoulder.”

As Gao Shide watched Zhou Shuyi lying beside him, he suddenly remembered the boy he’d met years ago — the one who’d said those very words with an angelic smile.

“You’re amazing, you know. Whoever you like is lucky to be loved by you.”

“That’s rare. First time you’ve ever complimented me,” Gao Shide said with a half-grin.

“I’m just stating the truth.”

Zhou Shuyi bent his elbow, resting his head on his arm as a makeshift pillow, and shrugged lightly.

The digital clock on the desk ticked softly in rhythm with their quiet conversation. But even after talking about things they’d never shared before, Zhou Shuyi couldn’t fall asleep in this unfamiliar place.

“Gao Shide… can I ask you a favor? Will you sing for me?”

It was 12:52 a.m. Unable to sleep, he blurted it out without thinking.

“Sing?” Gao Shide repeated, caught off guard.

“I always listen to music before I sleep. Come on, sing.”

“But I…”

“Please?”

The word sounded like a spell from a fairy tale. Gao Shide couldn’t refuse. As he tried to think of a lullaby, a familiar melody surfaced — one he’d once overheard Zhou Shuyi humming in the piano room.

He began to sing quietly to the melody in his memory:

“That summer day you set my heart aflame,

Love hides deep within you, circling endlessly.

Between us — a silence, an uncertain bond,

I want you to know, right now.

There’s no need to wait until tomorrow.

If you too could let the quiet rain

wash away your old beliefs,

Then the change in feeling would not just bring peace —

It would awaken a voice within,

A cry you’ve never heard before…”

“Keep going. That was good,” Zhou Shuyi murmured, turning toward him. He lightly scratched Gao Shide’s arm with his fingertip in encouragement.

“That’s the second compliment you’ve given me tonight,” Gao Shide teased.

“Keep singing. If you do it well, maybe you’ll earn a third.”

“Alright.”

Gao Shide smiled.

His low, calm voice chased away Zhou Shuyi’s unease. Gradually, Zhou Shuyi’s breathing grew steady and even. Though he usually disliked being touched, tonight he didn’t let go of Gao Shide’s fingers.

At 1:37 a.m., after confirming that Zhou Shuyi was fast asleep, Gao Shide gently slipped his arm free. He stood, got off the bed, and walked to the corner of the room.

There, he removed the skull from the human anatomy model and pulled out a small folded slip of paper hidden inside — the Wi-Fi password.

Sitting at the desk, he opened the laptop, typed in the password, and connected to the internet.

Then, from a messenger app chatroom, he began to type a message.
