~Outside the Library

“…You’re not dating him, right?” In the courtyard, Jiang Yuxin crouched down in front of Zhou Shuyi, looked up at him, and asked.

“Of course not. You’re misunderstanding.” Zhou Shuyi couldn’t even bring himself to look at her. His gaze dropped to the ground by his shoes, and he denied it in a weak voice.

Having never dated anyone before, Zhou Shuyi could only listen as Jiang Yuxin clenched her fists and spoke with fervent encouragement.

“Just be honest. These days, it’s not weird for a guy to like another guy. If you really like him, you should go for it! Zhengwen and I will totally support you!”

“Yuxin—” Noticing Zhou Shuyi’s face lowering further and his eyes growing red, Fang Zhengwen tugged on her sleeve, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere.

“…”

Even as he bit his lower lip, trying desperately to suppress his emotions, Zhou Shuyi could no longer hold them back. Tears spilled over, and faced with the girl who liked someone else, he almost blurted it out on impulse—

—――I love you!

—――Jiang Yuxin! The person I’ve always loved, past and present, is you!

From behind a nearby pillar, Gao Shide had been watching Zhou Shuyi, who now looked on the verge of breaking down. He could no longer remain a calm observer.

Stepping between the three of them, he placed his left hand gently over Zhou Shuyi’s eyes, hiding the tears that were about to fall.

“We’ve got something to take care of, so we’ll be leaving first.”

With that, he grabbed Zhou Shuyi’s arm, picked up the backpack that had been sitting beside them, and without acknowledging the shocked looks of the other two, led him away from the library courtyard.

~Inside the Clubroom

The rich aroma of chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns filled the clubroom. On the stove, ingredients simmered and danced in a pot of spicy mala broth.

Watching the person across from him adding more meat, Zhou Shuyi asked, “How did you know what I like to eat?”

Gao Shide scooped up a piece of tender duck blood with a spoon and placed it onto Zhou Shuyi’s disposable plate.

“I’ve known everything there is to know—and not to know—about you since elementary school.”

The words tumbled out quickly, almost like a tongue twister, but to Zhou Shuyi, they were unexpected. He had assumed Gao Shide only ever saw him as a rival—someone he competed with and nothing more.

“Thanks… for earlier,” Zhou Shuyi said.

He set down the cup of cola in his hand, leaned back against the chair, and gave a self-deprecating smile.

“If you hadn’t dragged me away, I probably would’ve said something I’d regret. She’s always been like that—slow to catch on, nerves thicker than an undersea cable, and always acting all high and mighty… Only Zhengwen can really handle her. Those two are… perfectly balanced together.”

Gao Shide didn’t say a word. He simply listened in silence as Zhou Shuyi talked about the girl he’d been secretly in love with for years. Quietly, he kept adding freshly cooked ingredients from the pot to Zhou Shuyi’s plate.

After a while of talking to himself, Zhou Shuyi seemed to realize the awkward atmosphere. He straightened his back, picked up his chopsticks, and looked into the bright red soup.

“Are the shrimp done?”

“Yeah.”

Gao Shide peeled the shells for him, placed the shrimp neatly onto his plate, then looked up and asked, “Have you gotten over Jiang Yuxin?”

“Looks like it.”

Zhou Shuyi liked shrimp, but hated getting his fingers dirty. He picked one up with his chopsticks and popped it into his mouth.

Satisfied by his expression, Gao Shide stood up. He went to the clubroom sink to wash the oil and faint fishy smell off his hands, then wiped them with a tissue.

“What really hurt you wasn’t the heartbreak,” he said quietly. “It was that it all ended before you even had a chance to fight for it.”

The one eating shrimp wrinkled his nose and replied, “Maybe so! But it’s all over now anyway. As long as she’s happy with the person she likes, that’s good enough for me.”

The shrimp was undeniably sweet—but for some reason, his mouth felt bitter. Trying to shift the mood, he looked back at Gao Shide, who had returned to the table and was eating from the hot pot.

“What about you? If the person you liked liked someone else… what would you do?”

“Hmm…” Gao Shide leaned forward with a teasing grin. “I’d probably make them break up—and then steal them away.”

“What? Seriously?”

Zhou Shuyi’s eyes widened in shock. He never imagined that Gao Shide could say something so dark—destroying someone’s relationship just to slip in himself.

“I’m kidding,” Gao Shide said smoothly after seeing Zhou Shuyi’s reaction.

Then he turned slightly, fished more shrimp out of the pot, peeled them carefully, and lined them up neatly on Zhou Shuyi’s plate.

In truth, he wished he could peel away his own layers too—expose his true self, let Zhou Shuyi see what was underneath.

But… did he have that kind of courage? What if the outcome was…

This time, at least, he had managed to get a little closer.

After the two had eaten until they were full, they cleaned up the stove and left the clubroom, heading off for their afternoon classes.

But before they’d even taken a few steps, Zhou Shuyi suddenly bent over, clutching his stomach. His face had gone pale as he stopped in his tracks and muttered weakly,

“Can I skip being your errand boy for this afternoon’s class…?”

Without answering, Gao Shide furrowed his brows, grabbed Zhou Shuyi’s wrist, and started walking in the opposite direction.

“Where are we going? Your classroom’s that way—ow, ow, ow, slow down…!”

His pained voice echoed down the hallway, growing fainter and fainter as the two of them disappeared from sight.
