~The Night Market

In front of a night stall, Gao Shide stood with his arms crossed and chin lifted, pointing with his eyes at the colorful balloons set into an acrylic board.

“Yeah. This is the place,” Zhou Shuyi replied with a nod.

“I’ve had plenty of competitions before, but this is my first time doing a game like this. Tonight, we’ll settle it here.”

To finally end his torturous stint as Gao Shide’s errand boy, he had to win—no matter what.

“I thought…” Gao Shide glanced around, then leaned in close and whispered by Zhou Shuyi’s ear, “I thought this was a date.”

Zhou Shuyi’s ears turned bright red as he clapped a hand over them and shouted, “Like hell I’d go on a date with you! So are we doing this or not?!”

“Sure.” The man who is ‘Forever Number One’ rolled up his sleeves and gave Zhou Shuyi, who was still flushed, a confident smirk.

***

A few minutes later—

After losing three times in a row, Zhou Shuyi threw his darts aside, stormed over to the next booth, and growled through gritted teeth, “One more round! I’m not accepting that!”

He grabbed an air gun and aimed it at the rotating roulette of balloons.

Watching his deadly serious expression, Gao Shide couldn’t help but soften—thinking; Maybe I should let him win just this once.

When the game ended, Gao Shide glanced at his own target. Every balloon was popped. But his opponent still had one pink balloon left, and the sound slipped out before he could stop himself.

“Ah…”

Crap. I won again.

“Hmph! Next one!”

The sore loser tossed the air gun aside, grabbed Gao Shide by the wrist, and dragged him toward the neighboring claw machine booth.

***

Twenty minutes later—

“Thank you so much!” Two high school girls accepted their plush toys with bright smiles from the winners of the game and left the shop happily.

“What next?” Gao Shide asked the other man, who was still glaring at him for his unbroken winning streak, even this late at night.

“The next game is…” Before Zhou Shuyi could finish, his phone began to buzz. It was an alarm he had set for himself. He looked at the screen, slipped the phone back into his pocket, and walked out of the store.

“Zhou Shuyi.” Still standing by the game machine, Gao Shide called out, unsatisfied.

“You’ve got class tomorrow morning too, don’t you? I’ll come get you at eight. Go home already!” Throwing his bag over his shoulder, Zhou Shuyi walked off, muttering, “Damn it… I really am just his errand boy.”

For a moment, Gao Shide just stood there, dazed. Then, a faint smile touched his lips.

He had memorized Zhou Shuyi’s class schedule. That—that—was what it meant to care about someone.

There were things he couldn’t say out loud, feelings he had to keep buried, but still— It was a really good relationship.

Something about it just felt… right.

Smiling without being able to hide it, he chased after his partner, leaving behind the night market that only grew livelier the later it got.

~The Library

“Fwaaah—” Zhou Shuyi let out a yawn. He meant to focus on his textbook again, but his eyes drifted to Gao Shide, who had fallen asleep beside him.

For a moment, he considered poking him with his pen. But then he thought, No, that’s not nearly enough payback for everything I’ve been through. He set the pen down—and decided it might be more satisfying to strangle him instead.

Just as that wicked thought crossed his mind, another idea suddenly struck. A grin spread across his face as he quietly stood up. Right. If I grab his phone while he’s sleeping, I can delete that video once and for all.

“Heh. Challenge me? You’re a hundred years too young.”

Muttering to himself, Zhou Shuyi crept up his hands behind Gao Shide and began rummaging through the backpack hanging off the back of his chair. Nothing.

Where could it be…? Then he spotted it—the corner of a phone sticking out from Gao Shide’s pants pocket.

Carefully, Zhou Shuyi reached for it, inch by inch. But just as his fingers brushed the phone, the supposedly sleeping Gao Shide suddenly woke up and caught Zhou Shuyi’s right hand mid-act.

Startled, the little thief lost his balance—and fell forward, his face landing squarely against Gao Shide’s thigh.

At that exact moment, Jiang Yuxin and Fang Zhengwen entered the library, searching for reference materials—only to walk straight into this intimate scene.

“Ah!!” Jiang Yuxin froze, her eyes wide at the sight of Zhou Shuyi with his face buried in Gao Shide’s lap.

Thud!

The heavy book she’d been holding slipped from her arms and hit the floor with a resounding crash that echoed through the quiet library.

“Yu…- Yuxin?” Zhou Shuyi turned around and saw the two of them standing in front of the bookshelf.

The four of them stared at one another across the aisle— one shocked, one exasperated, one frozen with a complex expression.

Only Gao Shide, still sitting in his chair, realized instantly what kind of misunderstanding they were all having.
