~The Atrium

During lunch break, many students gathered in the atrium to eat.

As he followed behind Gao Shide, Zhou Shuyi picked out what he wanted to eat while wondering how he might someday beat the man walking ahead of him. How could he win against him? How could he get himself ‘paroled’?

When Gao Shide chose a seat he liked, Zhou Shuyi—still undecided on what challenge to take on next—sat alone at another table as usual.

Shi Zheyu, who had been following the two of them, sat down across from Gao Shide and asked irritably, “Since when did you two get so close? Are you tight enough to even take classes together now?”

Gao Shide didn’t bother replying. Even while eating, his eyes were drawn to Zhou Shuyi, who seemed lost in thought.

“Shuyi!”

A bright voice cut through the noisy air. Liu Bingwei came walking over with a tray in hand. After a quick glance at Gao Shide, he sat down beside Zhou Shuyi, nudged him with his elbow, and whispered, “You’re smart.”

“What do you mean?” He had just come back to himself and had no idea what the other was talking about.

“You’ve infiltrated the enemy team, right? So? Found any weaknesses yet? What’s your next move—”

Zhou Shuyi quickly clamped a hand over Liu Bingwei’s mouth and glanced at Gao Shide sitting at the other table. Then he released his grip and said in a low voice, “I’m not doing this for fun!”

There was no way he could admit that he’d been blackmailed—turned from would-be avenger into errand boy.

“Zhou Shuyi.”

Gao Shide picked up his plate and sat down at Zhou Shuyi’s table. Casting a sideways glance at Liu Bingwei, he put one of his meatballs onto Zhou Shuyi’s plate.

“What are you doing?”

“Don’t want it. You can have it.”

“Pfft, picky eater, huh? Guess I’ll have to eat it then.” He said it as if annoyed, but his face practically said Lucky me.

Watching that, Shi Zheyu brought his own tray over, sat down across from Zhou Shuyi, and pointed at the meatball with his fork. After glancing at Gao Shide, he said provocatively, “I like meatballs too. Give me one.”

“No way!” Like a dog guarding its food, Zhou Shuyi wrapped both hands protectively around his plate. His childish gesture made the others chuckle, but Shi Zheyu slammed his fork on the table and snapped, “All you do is eat and sleep—are you a pig or what? If you’re tired, go home! You’re a bad influence. I don’t want to be dead last at finals—unlike you!”

“Shuyi can still do fine even if he sleeps through it,” Liu Bingwei immediately shot back.

“I’m talking to him, not you,” Shi Zheyu glared. But just then, a voice began reciting lines from the lecture they’d had earlier.

“If we analyze it based on theory, we can accurately propose related products suited to customer preferences—depending on timing, product attributes, or whether they’re married… Shall I continue?”

“…”

Shi Zheyu stared at Zhou Shuyi, dumbfounded. The other two weren’t surprised—they already knew about his talent. Gao Shide smiled faintly at the stubborn man and thought quietly; That’s Zhou Shuyi for you.

“Some people can study in their sleep. Like me.”

That teasing tone immediately provoked his opponent.

“Yeah? So what? You still keep losing to Shide, don’t you?”

“You don’t get it,” Liu Bingwei interjected, trying to defend him. “Shuyi’s not losing—he’s just never won before.”

Zhou Shuyi elbowed him in the chest, face dark. “Hey, that’s not helping.” Then he drew his elbow back and said plainly, “It’s true I haven’t beaten Gao Shide.”

“Didn’t expect you to be so honest,” Shi Zheyu said, slightly surprised by the unexpected admission—but at the same time, somewhat impressed by this troublesome guy.

Zhou Shuyi shrugged. “Losing is losing. Winning is winning. I’m not going to make excuses.”

At that moment, two figures appeared in the cafeteria.

The instant he saw them, Zhou Shuyi quickly bowed his head and shoveled down the rest of his food before saying to Gao Shide, “I’m full. I’ll wait outside.”

“Hey—!”

Liu Bingwei thought the words were meant for him, hastily set down his chopsticks, and started to get up, but Gao Shide stopped him. “He was talking to me.”

With that, Gao Shide picked up his bag and followed Zhou Shuyi out of the bustling atrium.

“Gao…-”

Shi Zheyu watched their retreating backs, then looked away in frustration. Seeing Liu Bingwei stuffing his mouth full of food, he glared, grabbed the last pork cutlet from his plate, and barked, “Hey!”

“What?”

When Liu Bingwei looked up at the stolen cutlet and Shi Zheyu’s sulking face, he seemed to understand. He dropped his leftover pickled radish onto Shi Zheyu’s plate with a grin. “Here, have this too. It goes great with fried stuff.”

“…”

He’d only acted out of stupid anger, but getting a smile in return—somehow even the pickled radish on the plate seemed to prick at his heart.

“Come on, eat up. We’ve got class this afternoon, remember?”

“Yeah.”

The irritation slowly faded away. The crisp coating, the juicy meat, the sweet-and-sour tang of pickled radish soaked in sugar and vinegar—all of it mixed together, spreading across his tongue.

Zhou Shuyi hurriedly fled the atrium—only to be caught and pinned against the wall by Gao Shide, who had chased after him.

Seeing Zhou Shuyi’s pained expression, Gao Shide frowned in anger and demanded, “How long are you going to keep avoiding them?”

Those two had already decided to be together. Zhou Shuyi, who had harbored unspoken feelings, needed to say goodbye to those emotions. Otherwise, he would only end up hurting himself. That was what Gao Shide believed.

“I know that. But when I see Yuxin, I still…” Zhou Shuyi trailed off and clenched the necklace hanging around his neck. He’d thought of it as a lucky charm—yet now, his face clouded over.

The three of them used to share a bond that nothing could shake. But now, whenever he faced those two, all that remained was awkwardness and helplessness.

“Baka!” Unable to watch Zhou Shuyi suffer any longer, Gao Shide blurted out ‘idiot’ in Japanese.

“You’re the idiot here.”

Zhou Shuyi glared back, snapping in return.

“Not that you’d understand anyway. No point talking to you.”

“I do understand.”

“What could you possibly—”

He meant to argue back, but the intensity in Gao Shide’s eyes—the earnest, unwavering gaze—stole the words from his mouth.

“Gao Shide… do you like someone? Who is it? Don’t tell me—it’s Shi Zheyu?”

“…!” The baseless assumption made Gao Shide’s eyes widen in disbelief. He immediately released Zhou Shuyi and turned away to leave.

“Hey! I was joking, don’t get mad—”

“I’m not mad.”

“Then tell me! Who is it?”

Zhou Shuyi slung an arm around Gao Shide’s shoulder like a nosy tabloid reporter, pressing him for answers.

“I don’t want to say.”

“Why not? You know my secret, so let me hear yours too!”

“I just don’t want to tell you.”

With that cryptic tone, Gao Shide shook off Zhou Shuyi’s arm and walked off before the other could react.

“Damn it! After all the crap I put up with every day, you still won’t even tell me that? Stingy bastard.”

Grumbling, Zhou Shuyi hurried after him—and like a pest, threw his arm around Gao Shide’s shoulder once again, just to annoy him.
