Fang Zhengwen sighed, clearly exasperated. “You said the same thing back in sixth grade, remember? You dug a pit trap to get back at him, but you’re the one who fell in. Then, of course, Gao Shide happened to walk by and rescued you. In junior high and again in high school—you always said you wanted to ‘make a memorable act,’ and every single time, you were the one who ended up in tears.”

That story struck a nerve, setting off the proud, short-tempered ‘kitten’ instantly.

“What’s that supposed to mean? You saying I can’t win against him?”

“You’re an adult now—try solving things with words,” Fang Zhengwen tried to continue, but before he could finish, Zhou Shuyi, seething with anger, grabbed his backpack, stood up, and shouted at them both.

“I’m doing this no matter what! So stay out of my way!”

“Zhou Shuyi!” Fang Zhengwen called after him, trying to stop his impulsive friend.

Liu Bingwei just shrugged and started to stand, intending to leave with him, but before he could, the furious Zhou Shuyi barked at him— “Don’t follow me!”

“…Okay.” Liu Bingwei rubbed his nose helplessly and sat back down, watching his friend storm out of the classroom.

“Twenty-two years old, and still so selfish,” Fang Zhengwen muttered, looking at the chalkboard full of prank plans with a weary sigh.

“But that childish side of him… I think it’s kind of cute,” Liu Bingwei said softly, a fond smile spreading across his face as he gazed down the hallway where Zhou Shuyi had disappeared—his expression full of quiet, unrequited affection.

The Next Day―

In a quiet corner of campus stood a classroom housing a grand piano.

The Steinway had been donated by an alumnus, and every year, the university invited professional tuners and repairers to maintain it.

As a result, even after many years, its tone remained rich and delicate — three consecutive high notes would still resonate with beautiful clarity.

With the tip of his shoe pressing gently on the pedal, Zhou Shuyi let his fingers dance freely across the eighty-eight keys, shaping melodies at will.

Beneath the piano’s raised lid, the hammers struck the strings, releasing a gentle, flowing harmony.

Eyes closed, Zhou Shuyi swayed softly to the rhythm, humming along with the tune.

Sitting there at the piano, he looked nothing like the impulsive man he had been the day before — instead, he seemed like a refined young musician, completely absorbed in the beauty of sound.

Standing on the lawn outside the piano room, Gao Shide listened quietly, watching him play.

―――So calm, so graceful… so soothing.

When the final hammer struck the last string, Gao Shide couldn’t help himself — he clapped and called out with genuine excitement.

“Bravo!”

“—!”

Startled, Zhou Shuyi looked up, breaking from his reverie, and saw his rival standing outside the window.

“Why did you stop? It was wonderful,” Gao Shide said with an easy smile.

“I wasn’t asking for your opinion.”

He had never played that original composition for anyone — and now the last person he wanted to hear it had heard it.

Seeing Gao Shide climb in through the window and step into the classroom made Zhou Shuyi’s blood boil so much it nearly choked him.

Gao Shide slowly approached, glancing at him from the side as he spoke. “You’re the one behind all those pranks, aren’t you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The 182-centimeter-tall Gao Shide bent down slightly, leaning close to Zhou Shuyi — and sniffed the left side of his neck. “Smells like baby powder.”

Zhou Shuyi’s expression froze. He shoved him away, stammering. “Liar! I already threw that awa—!”

The instant he said it, Gao Shide’s face shifted — that I knew it look flashing across his features. And Zhou Shuyi realized, too late, that he’d slipped up.

“Threw it away?” Gao Shide’s voice was calm, almost knowing.

Unable to respond, Zhou Shuyi rose from the chair, his eyes blazing with anger, and stormed out of the piano room.

Only after Zhou Shuyi’s back had completely disappeared from sight did Gao Shide finally let his true feelings surface.

Softly, as though afraid the air itself might hear, he whispered the name of the person he cherished most.

“Zhou Shuyi…”

***

“Damn it, he’s like sticky candy — no matter where I go, he just clings to me.”

With an irritated expression, Zhou Shuyi walked across campus, thinking he’d go for a swim to clear his head.

Just then, he spotted two familiar figures ahead of him.

He was about to sneak up on them to give them a scare—when their conversation suddenly reached his ears.

“Zhengwen, do you… dislike me?”

Stopping in the hallway, Jiang Yuxin turned to face Fang Zhengwen, who was walking behind her.

“No, of course not,” he replied, looking troubled.

Jiang Yuxin gazed at the younger man. She didn’t want things to stay vague between them anymore—were they just friends, or something more?

Taking a deep breath to summon her courage, she said clearly,

“I like you. If you don’t dislike me… then go out with me!”

“—!”

Fang Zhengwen stared at her in shock. The girl in front of him was the very one he’d quietly been in love with all this time.

Standing behind them, Zhou Shuyi froze. He gripped the pendant on his necklace tightly. His lips trembled, and his nose stung.

―――The person I like… likes someone else.

He wanted to run—run away from that place right now. As he quietly stepped back, his smartphone slipped from his hand and hit the floor with a loud clatter.

“Shuyi? What are you doing here?”

Both Jiang Yuxin and Fang Zhengwen turned around to see their childhood friend standing behind them.

Before she could ask further, Zhou Shuyi forced a smile, walked up, and threw an arm around Fang Zhengwen’s shoulder, exaggerating his tone to hide the pain.

“Come on, hurry up and give her your answer! I was starting to worry you’d never get a girlfriend. When you two get married, don’t forget to send me an invitation! And when you have kids someday—let me be the godfather, alright?”

“Shuyi…”

Fang Zhengwen had always suspected that Zhou Shuyi liked Jiang Yuxin as well, but seeing his reaction now, that suspicion turned into certainty.
