Chapter 38.1
WARNING – This chapter mentions about attempt suicide.
It is really not easy to live in this powerful and insalubrious ancient time. Some people kill others as easily as trampling ants to death and they don’t even need to give the victim’s family an explanation. Even if Shi Ye magnanimously spared him this time, maybe one day his head will be separated from his body if he accidentally does something wrong or says the wrong thing.
He obviously escaped the Wen family’s schemes and avoided the design of the plot but unfortunately he still cannot avoid Shi Ye, the future tyrant.
The more Wen Chi thought about it, the more unbearable he felt. He was angry with Shi Ye and he was also angry with himself, as a modern person he was so weak and useless in ancient times.
He thought he could turn around by relying on the locust plague but since he came back from meeting with the emperor, he hasn’t heard any news. The emperor just rewarded him with a bunch of things. Other than that, he seems to have forgotten his existence …
WARNING
Wen Chi’s back was pressed against the edge of the barrel and his body slowly slid down. Soon, he submerged himself in the hot water.
Time passed slowly.
The feeling of suffocation creeped up bit by bit.
Wen Chi felt the air slowly being sucked away from his chest and for a moment it seemed that even all his senses became distant and there was only the sound of wobbling water in his ears.
Drowning is very unpleasant and requires a certain process to die.
During this period, countless thoughts of wanting to stand up flooded Wen Chi’s mind but he forcibly endured them all.
Almost there.
He was about to be freed.
Wen Chi was in great pain but fortunately his consciousness had become blurred, he could no longer tell whether he was alive or dead. So he could only hug his legs numbly, waiting for the darkness to descend completely.
He should be dead…
Finally, he thought so.
END OF WARNING
Unexpectedly, just as he finished thinking, a hand suddenly descended from the above, grabbed his hair and lifted him up from the water.
The severe pain recalled all of Wen Chi’s consciousness at once and he felt so clearly that he was out of the suffocating water and the fresh air rushed towards his face.
Wen Chi no longer had the energy to think about what was going on, he opened his mouth instinctively, gasping for air and there was no trace of blood on his pale face.
After a long time, he struggled out of that bout of despair.
Then he fixed his eyes and saw a familiar face.
Wen Chi: “…”
If he was not hallucinating, at this moment, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Shi Ye was crouching expressionlessly in front of the wooden barrel, one hand on the edge of the barrel and the other hand grasping his hair, his eyes gazing at him expressionlessly.
Shi Ye was still wearing the clothes from before and the black ink on his face was not yet wiped off and the neckline was full of spots of ink.
Wen Chi stared blankly at the “masterpieces” on Shi Ye’s body, all of which were made by him. He didn’t expect Shi Ye, who is such a clean person, to come here without changing his clothes.
The two people just stared at each other.
After a long time, Wen Chi couldn’t hold back and said, “What do you want from me?”

Shi Ye silently let go of the hand holding his hair, seemed to think for a moment and then pulled the corner of his mouth: “Do you know what happened to the last person who threw a tantrum at Bengong?”
Wen Chi pursed his lips and remained silent.
“That person’s heart was dug out by Bengong.” Shi Ye seemed to recall something bad, the arc of his mouth was slowly suppressed and a layer of frost covered his eyes, “Bengong wanted her to watch with her own eyes as Bengong crushed her heart. Benogng wanted her to die but not die too easily.”
Wen Chi snorted.
He thought to himself that some people didn’t need to throw a tantrum at Shi Ye to die in a very ugly way.
Shi Ye withdrew his thoughts and returned to his previous indifferent expression. He said to Wen Chi, “So do you know what to do?”
Wen Chi said, “I don’t know.”
Shi Ye said: “I will give you a chance to make up for your mistakes.”
Wen Chi thought for a while, then suddenly tilted his head and asked solemnly: “I don’t want to make up for my mistakes, can I apologize with death?”
Shi Ye didn’t seem to expect him to say these words, and there was a hint of consternation in his expression.
Before Shi Ye could react, Wen Chi immersed himself in the hot water again.
But just as he was immersed, Shi Ye grabbed his hair again and lifted him up from the water like a chicken.
Wen Chi only felt water rushing past his ears and when he opened his eyes again, he saw Shi Ye’s sullen face.
“Bengong waited for you at the lake and then came to the Bamboo flute residence to look for you. Bengong waited for you for so long and you did not even say a word of apology at all instead you actually dared to seek death in front of Bengong. Do you think Bengong won’t let you die?”
Even though Shi Ye was still wearing a half-face mask, his appearance at this time was still terrifying. The anger in his eyes almost overflowed along his gaze, even with a faint killing intent.
Wen Chi was grabbed by Shi Ye’s hair, just like a little chicken in Shi Ye’s hand, not daring to move.
Shi Ye approached him with a livid face and all the hot air he exhaled sprayed on Wen Chi’s face: “Do you think death can solve everything? Do you think I will let you die so easily? I’m telling you, death is not painful, what is painful is the process of dying. If you really want to seek death, Bengong can fulfill it for you. Bengong will let you suffer for seven days and seven nights before killing you.”
Wen Chi was stunned and he even began to regret that he hadn’t died sooner.
At this moment, he could only look helplessly at Shi Ye who was burning with anger. He believed that Shi Ye would do what he said and also believed that Shi Ye really had the ability to make him suffer for seven days and seven nights before killing him.
Shi Ye’s hand holding his hair slid down to his cheek and finally pinched his chin.
“Tell me.” Shi Ye’s voice was hoarse, apparently he was also very angry just now, “Do you still want to die?”
Wen Chi was drenched in water, his wet black hair stuck to both sides of his cheeks, and the soft candlelight shone on him, coating his fair skin with a layer of warm yellow light.
He looked extremely pitiful, his beautiful almond eyes were widened by fright. The corners of his eyes were flushed and his thin lips were trembling slightly, not knowing whether it was from the cold or from being frightened.
He gasped: “For the sake of serving you for so many days, please give me a good ending.”

Aiiyooo Wen Chi bb TvT .. just sack him good ei? D:
Thank you so much for the update!!~ 🙇🏻🙇🏻🙇🏻🙇🏻🙇🏻
I love this chapter so much, my favorite Danmei.
Despite all the hilarious outcomes, WC really did endure alot ever since he came into this era, so far from home, and no real support system. Yes, he had the strange Ruo sibilings but those are his servants, not really friends. WC having to deal with a difficult person like SY who treats him harshly, the stress of dealing with palace intrigue and no loving family, I can understand WC wanting to give up.
If anyone thinks MC is just weak, just think again. He was an ordinary person (with no golden halos/fingers) transmigrated into a different world with Mpreg involved and his marriage tied to the palace, there’s always bound to be assassinations/murder plots and MC can’t deal with them alone. His family detests him, the Emperor didn’t give any importance of his existence other than gifts, others are only in for the connections, what do you expect? Even the relationship between the Ruo twins are servants, not close enough and Ping An guy is sus as hell. So the only person left is the CP. The previous trauma of the late Yue Shan, some others, public embarassment and life hanging by a thread is what made him take the extreme step, that no one would care even if he was gone. Plz understand that his decision wasn’t impulsive (what looked funny for us wasn’t the same for him)
To me it’s like, what other options did the author give Wen Chi. Like the author’s in complete control of Wen Chi’s circumstances and Shi Ye’s personality. They didn’t give Wen Chi anything he could use to escape or make Shi Ye not kill him, they didn’t make Shi Ye nice enough to stop at literally any point before now. Shi Ye punishes you if you stand up to him, he punishes you if you say you deserve punishment, he kills you if you ask for death without actually meaning it*, so yeah. Actually wanting to die seems like the only way for Wen Chi to get out of this predicament.
*Those last two seem especially unreasonable to me because from what I can tell it seems like saying stuff like “please punish this servant” and “this servant deserves death” is to an angry superior is NORMAL in his society. Like it’d be one thing to say those things in a society where there was no established precedent for saying that. THEN you’d be being weirdly melodramatic and it’d be pretty justified for the other person to get pissed at you. But if you’re a noble or something in Shi Ye’s society servants probably say that to you all the time as sort of a standard apology. Seems obnoxious to take them seriously.
Of course the author didn’t give them a way out… This moment is the shifting point; *this* is their way out (hopefully).
Wen Chi was never supposed to have another option, and Shi Ye was never framed as a good person. Shi Ye has always been a villain, even before the story started. It was the readers, us, that expected, as the love interest, he’d be doating, that he’d automatically change his behavior for Wen Chi because that’s what love interests are expected to do. But he didn’t, so we got upset, but I like this more. Because why should Shi Ye change? He has no reason to change himself for a man he barely knows.
Does it hurt? Yes. But it’s in character.
This moment changes everything for both of them. Now, things can change.
I don’t think anyone saw him as weak. It’s a very logical choice.
First off, thank so very much for including two very clear warnings about the attempt. It may seem spoilery or superfluous to some readers, but for others it can absolutely necessary.
I think this chapter is something like the first mini climax for WC’s character and his relationship with SY. Mostly because he’s finally able to communicate his sincere feelings. I hope we get a glimpse of SY’s thoughts soon so we can understand what his behavior has been about.
I’m done too !! I don’t think I would have lasted this long.
Honestly, if i’m in Wen Chi’s shoe, i’ll will kill my self too, too may hardship, my mentality can’t handle this,, why live in hardship, when u can free your self if you die,…
The fact that his attempt is very realistic… In real life most succesful attempts are done at the spur of the moment, last minute and no clear su***dal signs before attempt… It was just in time that SY caught him.. If not he would really be gone:( Poor Wenchi… He has been under intense pressure for so long and reached his breaking point.. I just want him to be happyyy wuwuwuuuuuuuuu :'(
Poor baby 💔
Sometimes I imagine that I will find myself in the same situation – I will die in my world, or I will fall asleep and wake up in another, alien world. It would be OK if it was the world of the future or the world of the present, but ancient times are a nightmare. Human life in those years was nothing, people were sold, they were cheaper than cows and pigs. Those in high places could kill you, torture you, rape you, insult you – and you had to endure.
In our world there is law, there is judgement, there is equality and justice.
And I realised – I couldn’t stand it, and I would have killed myself almost immediately. My character wouldn’t be strong enough. I don’t have that kind of willpower.
To be honest, I totally don’t want them get together later..
ML is an ancient person without any compassion.. He doesn’t cherish other’s life at all.. His situation has made him a psychopath..
MC has been suffering since he transmigrated.. He should return his own timeline when all of these farces end.. Not everyone deserves a stockholm syndrome from author..
Since this is romance, I’m now wondering how and why WC would fall in love with this prick in the future chapters. Because if I were him, I wouldn’t. “B-but he’ll change–” IDGAF. How many times has he strangled him? Humiliated him? Made him cry? There’s nothing I do better in this world than hold grudges. I’m hoping the MC would too. Or at least keep it in mind that this guy made his life HELL for simply existing.
