Wen Liang is so annoying tbh… Sure, I understand that he does not want to marry a violent, murderous man (altough his disability and disfigurement was probably also a big reason, which I do not agree with), and it is reasonable that he would rather sacrefice his brother whom he doesn’t have a strong relationship with, but his constant “woe is me” attitude is beyond frustrating. If he did something bad, even if reasonable, he should act accordingly. Apologising is good and all, but throwing a pityparty in front of the person who suffers because of him is really low, especially since he did absolutely nothing to change his father’s decision. Yes, it wasn’t Wen Liang who decided to switch them. But it was his fault that it happened in the first place, and he didn’t even say half a word to plead for his brother. He was perfectly content to sacrefice his brother. So, he really should behave according to his actions, and accept some guilt, without crying and talking like he is the one suffering the most.
And this chapter too – like mother, like son. They both blame Wen Chi for “not giving them a way to survive” and “he is too much, why is he venting on their father”, like b*tch?? The only reason the family is even alive, is because Wen Chi pleaded for them, and worked hard in (literally!!) life-threatening situations to gather enough favor for the crown prince to consider his plea. If not for that, they would all be rotting corpses. It was Wen Chi who was betrayed by his sh*t family that never gave him a reason to like them, it was him who was thrown like garbage at a murderous person, it was him who had to struggle hard to survive, and in the end, it was him who saved their sorry asses, and yet, it’s still them, who complain and cry, and for what reason? Because Wen Chi didn’t manage to completely erase their punishment? The delusion is strong in them. They messed with the imperial family, which is obviously a taboo, and then they resent a male concubine, without any official status or any power except the favor and whim of his husband, who is notoriously not generous with his kindness.
I originally did not have a problem with Wen Liang, since his want to avoid near certain death is reasonable, and it’s not like he pointed at Wen Chi and said “kill him in my stead”, but damn, his narcissistic behaviour is annoying.

Those are my thoughts exactly! I can understand his naiveté; he’s been sheltered his whole life, even now, but that comment about Wei Chi not helping bothered me more than anything he’s done. That comment clarified that he isn’t just naive but stupid.
By all means, he should understand that since his father put his brother in this situation, it’s his father’s fault he’s facing the consequences of his actions. If he truly felt guilty over ‘letting’ Wen Chi take his place, then he should feel like he deserved to be ridiculed, because that’s how people think when they feel guilty.
I like the chapter parallels between Wen Chi and Wen Liang after the Dragon Boat Festival.
Wen Chi faced a mostly genuine life or death situation, got seriously injured while trying to save a life (even if unwilling), wasn’t given any concern, but instead was told he was a pathetic and stupid hindrance to a plan he didn’t know he was a part of. He was left alone, couldn’t even bathe himself, and nearly lost consciousness afterward.
Wen Liang was justifiably insulted and got a couple of scratches. Everyone is so concerned about him, and he ‘can’t bathe himself’ even though he has servants who could help him.
I’m not one to gatekeep trauma; I’m sure it was the worst that Wen Liang has gone through. My issue is that he had the resources to help with that trauma yet rejected it so he could throw a pity party for himself. Wen Chi had no one. These few chapters really showcased the difference between these two in more ways than one.

And please realize that the Wen brothers are different because in ancient china ppl gon married at around 13, 14 while both are considered young Wen Chi is obviously older more mature explaining his naivitè in his decisions etc and they never really stated their relationship exclusively
