PTBLSI chapter 78

Hidden

Qi Zhounan really came the next day. Xie Hui didn’t come back for the New Year this year because of work. Standing alone between Qi Xi and Fu Yanchuan, Qi Zhounan seemed out of place. Qi Xi didn’t treat him like a guest at all. He didn’t even greet him, leaving Qi Zhounan not knowing where to stay.

Luckily, close to noon, Fu Wanyi arrived with Fu Yi and Fu Zhen. At least he didn’t look so out of place anymore, even though he didn’t know them.

The Fu family had never really had New Year’s visit traditions in previous years. The gathering on the third day of the Lunar New Year was considered a mutual New Year greeting. When Fu Yanchuan saw Fu Wanyi, he looked puzzled and asked bluntly, with no hint of welcome, “What are you here for?”

“Of course to pay New Year’s greetings! Are you so upset that you don’t even want to give out red envelopes?”

Fu Wanyi had expected this reaction from Fu Yanchuan. She took off the two kids’ coats and went straight in. After all, Fu Yanchuan couldn’t kick them out.

This year’s gathering had been canceled, and he really hadn’t prepared anything. When the two kids came up to him and looked up, they said in unison, “Uncle Yan, happy New Year.”

Facing the two pairs of eager eyes, he asked Qi Xi for help. “Xi Xi, can I borrow your red envelope?”

At the annual meeting, Cheng Shu had given everyone a red envelope, but Qi Xi only had one. He handed it to Fu Yanchuan, who casually passed it to the two kids. “You divide it yourselves.”

Fu Yi and Fu Zhen were both stunned. Even though they were twins, they had never shared a red envelope before and didn’t know what to do.

Fu Wanyi took it speechlessly. “Mom will keep it for you.”

The two exchanged looks and handed the envelope to Wanyi. Then they said to Yanchuan, “Thank you, Uncle Yan.”

“You should thank Uncle Qi. He’s the one who gave it to you.”

Qi Xi immediately glared at Fu Yanchuan. “Didn’t you say you were borrowing it from me?”

Fu Yanchuan refused to admit it at this moment, pretending he hadn’t said anything about borrowing it. The two kids obediently turned to Qi Xi.

“Thank you, Auntie.”

“Thank you, Uncle Qi.”

The two, who were usually in perfect unison, weren’t synchronized this time. Fu Zhen said disdainfully to Fu Yi, “You got it wrong.”

Fu Yi, who had grown a year older and felt more mature, responded in an old-fashioned tone, “Why are you being so immature? You’re the one who was wrong.”

Fu Zhen didn’t believe his sister and insisted on asking Qi Xi. “Uncle Qi, did I call it wrong?”

Qi Xi blushed at being called “auntie” and didn’t know how to answer. Fu Yanchuan flicked Fu Zhen’s forehead. “You called it wrong.”

Fu Zhen covered his forehead, confused. “But Uncle Qi is a man.”

Qi Xi finally spoke up. “Right! Call me Uncle Qi!”

“See? You’re the one who was wrong.”

Fu Zhen turned to Fu Yi with his hands on his hips, full of pride. Fu Yi gave him a look that said she wouldn’t argue with an idiot.

Qi Zhounan, who had been left on the sidelines, now had a dark expression. Fu Wanyi was the first to notice him. “And that one is?”

Qi Xi introduced him casually: “My younger brother. His name is Qi Zhounan.”

Qi Zhounan didn’t want to embarrass his brother. He finally returned to his usual exterior, nodding politely. “Hello, sister. You can call me Zhounan.”

Fu Wanyi didn’t react much, but Qi Xi was startled. He looked at Qi Zhounan in disbelief, as if seeing a stranger he didn’t recognize.

Fu Yi tugged on Fu Wanyi’s hand and asked, “Mom, what should we call this brother?”

Calling him uncle was too soon for Qi Zhounan’s age, but calling him brother was confusing. Qi Zhounan crouched down and said kindly to the two kids, “You can call me Second Uncle Qi.”

Second Uncle Qi?

Fu Wanyi couldn’t help but laugh. Qi Xi asked Fu Yanchuan, “Is it okay to call him that?”

Fu Yanchuan gave a direct order: “Call him Brother.”

The two kids, who always listened to Fu Yanchuan, replied in unison, “Brother Zhounan.”

Only Qi Zhounan was dissatisfied. He glared at Fu Yanchuan, who completely ignored him and led his brother away.

Fu Yanchuan had originally planned to cook for Qi Xi himself today, but he changed his mind when people arrived and called the chef over instead.

While the kitchen staff cooked, they stayed in the living room. Compared to last year, Fu Yi and Fu Zhen were noisier and crawled around everywhere.

Fu Yanchuan wasn’t used to it, but he didn’t find it unacceptable. In fact, he felt a kind of liveliness he had never experienced before.

No matter how mature Qi Zhounan tried to act, he was still a kid at heart. He could still play with Fu Yi and Fu Zhen. In the end, he even dragged Qi Xi into it, and the four of them played a boring game of hide-and-seek.

Hearing the noise of the “kids,” Fu Wanyi looked at Fu Yanchuan. “Yanchuan, you’ve really changed a lot this year.”

Fu Yanchuan leaned against the sofa and remained silent for a long time before responding. “People always change.”

Fu Wanyi’s gaze shifted from his face to the balcony, and she sighed. “Yes, I saw Yuejiang before the New Year. He’s changed a lot, too. I almost didn’t recognize him. I used to think he would always be such a bastard.”

Fu Yanchuan gave a soft, cold laugh. “When we were young, Qin Hui actually didn’t dislike him. They were even very close.”

When he brought Qin Hui back to the Fu family, Qin Hui met Fu Yuejiang at his house. Qin Hui was afraid of him and was always careful around him, but with Fu Yuejiang, who often came over, he was much more relaxed.

At that time, Fu Yuejiang was still a kid and not as rotten as he became later. He was warm, proactive, and easy to get along with. Most people probably would have preferred to be friends with Fu Yuejiang back then.

Fu Wanyi continued, “Back then, he treated everyone well. I remember once when I was picked up. Only Qin Hui noticed that I was upset and came to comfort me. It would have been better if he had never met people like us.”

Fu Yanchuan glanced at Fu Wanyi. “You’re not the one who owes him an apology.”

“It’s me.” Fu Wanyi suddenly lowered her head, gripping the sofa tightly, and spoke in a low voice. “That last day, when you went in, I knew they were inside. I didn’t stop you… I hated Fu Yuejiang. I couldn’t save Qin Hui, so I wanted to use you to make Fu Yuejiang suffer… But I didn’t expect Qin Hui would—”

“Stop talking.”

Fu Yanchuan cut Fu Wanyi off. Then Fu Zhen suddenly ran over. “Uncle Yan, I can’t find them anymore. Can you help me find them?”

“Okay.”

Fu Yanchuan followed Fu Zhen, leaving Fu Wanyi alone and crying silently in the living room.

The house wasn’t big, so there weren’t many places to hide. Fu Yanchuan and Fu Zhen searched the house once and quickly figured out where someone was hiding.

He told Fu Zhen, “There’s no one here. Go check the other rooms.”

After tricking Fu Zhen away, he went into the study. Between Qi Xi’s paint cabinet and the window, there was a half-meter gap. When the curtains were pulled over and piled there, they could perfectly hide a person.

Qi Xi heard what Fu Yanchuan said. He lifted the curtain to show one eye. When he saw that it was Fu Yanchuan, he asked, “Did he leave?”

Fu Yanchuan didn’t answer. He lifted the curtain and hid inside as well. In that half-meter space, the two of them were squeezed together, leaving almost no room. When the curtain fell back down, they were tightly hidden inside.

Unable to move, Qi Xi asked Fu Yanchuan, “Why did you come in?”

“To stay with you.”

As he spoke, he put his arm around Qi Xi’s waist. Qi Xi hurriedly grabbed his hand to stop him from hugging him and said, “Fu Zhen will come back later.”

“Don’t worry about him.”

Instead, Fu Yanchuan gripped Qi Xi’s hand, leaned over, buried his face in Qi Xi’s neck, and said in a low voice, “Xixi, let me hold you for a while.”

Qi Xi didn’t know why Fu Yanchuan was sad again. He couldn’t move because his hand was held, so he rubbed his face against Fu Yanchuan’s neck. “What’s wrong with you?”

“I just want to hold you.”

“All right then. Brother Xixi will comfort you.”

Finally, Fu Yanchuan let go of Qi Xi’s hand. The next moment, Qi Xi was pulled into an embrace. A warm hand pressed against his back and Qi Xi’s kisses brushed against his ear. He couldn’t help but ask Qi Xi to promise him, “Xixi, never leave me.”

“Mhm, then you won’t leave me either.”

“I won’t leave you.”

Fu Zhen searched around again but still couldn’t find anyone. He returned to the door of the study. He heard what sounded like people talking inside, but when he went in, he didn’t see anyone.

He tilted his head in confusion. “Oh no! Uncle Yan is missing too!”

Because there were guests at home, Dasheng had been hiding in its own little villa. Now, it finally came out to check the situation. Passing by the study, Dasheng smelled an unfamiliar scent and turned its head to see a strange human child.

“Kitty!”

Fu Zhen immediately stopped looking for people and ran toward the orange cat. But as soon as he got close, the cat ran away.

Hidden in the gym, Qi Zhounan and Fu Yi stared at each other. They had been hiding for a long time and didn’t understand why Fu Zhen still couldn’t find them. In the end, they came out themselves, only to realize that Fu Zhen had forgotten about them.

While eating, Fu Yi said he wouldn’t play with Fu Zhen anymore in the future.

Fu Zhen didn’t care at all. He was thinking about Dasheng the whole time. He insisted on sitting next to Qi Xi while eating and asked, “Uncle Qi, can I play with Dasheng? Can you call him out?”

After Fu Zhen chased him, Dasheng hid under the bed and wouldn’t come out. Qi Xi couldn’t do anything about it. “Even if I call it, it won’t come out. It doesn’t listen to me anymore.”

At that moment, Fu Yanchuan suddenly brought up the house rules, telling Fu Zhen not to talk. Fu Zhen immediately sat up straight and ate his meal obediently.

After finishing his meal, Fu Zhen still thought about Dasheng, but he didn’t see it again until he left that evening.

He asked unwillingly, “Uncle Qi, can I come again next time to see it?”

Fu Yanchuan didn’t want him to come again and refused. “No, you’re too noisy. It doesn’t like noisy kids like you.”

“When am I noisy? Fu Yī’s(one) voice is obviously louder!”

Fu Yi argued back. “Yours is louder! And my name is Fu Yi. Don’t call me Fu Fu Yī!”

“Fu Yī, Fu Yī, Fu Yī!”

“Fu Er(Two), Fu Er, Fu Er Er Er Er!”

Fu Wanyi couldn’t stand the noise anymore, so he covered both of their mouths. “We’re leaving first.”

Qi Xi didn’t think the two kids were noisy at all. He said goodbye reluctantly. “Come play again next time!”

Fu Zhen immediately pushed his mom’s hand away. “Can I play with Dasheng next time?”

Fu Yanchuan refused again. “There is no next time.”

Fu Zhen wanted to argue, but Fu Wanyi dragged him away.

Fu Yanchuan turned around and looked at Qi Zhounan, who was still standing there, dazed. The intention of driving him away was obvious.

Qi Zhounan knew he couldn’t stay. Before leaving, he tried to hug his brother, but Fu Yanchuan held Qi Xi and wouldn’t let go. He could only say, “Brother, I’m leaving. Can I come again tomorrow?”

Qi Xi didn’t want to see him every day and told him bluntly, “I don’t want to see you every day. Hurry up and go!”

Pretending not to hear, Qi Zhounan said, “Then I’m leaving. I’ll come again tomorrow. See you tomorrow, Brother.”

Finally, the door closed again. Qi Xi turned around and climbed onto Fu Yanchuan. Only then did Fu Yanchuan hug him and say, “Having guests at home is really tiring.”

Fu Yanchuan could tell that Qi Xi had a lot of fun. He had noticed early on that Qi Xi really liked lively situations. He carried Qi Xi back to the living room and collapsed onto the sofa. Suddenly, he asked, “Xixi, do you like kids?”

Qi Xi had never really thought about whether he liked kids. The only children he had been around were Qi Zhounan when he was young, and Fu Yi and Fu Zhen. He didn’t understand what Fu Yanchuan was trying to ask.

He couldn’t answer, so Fu Yanchuan said, “Never mind. We’ll talk about it later.”

Instead, he asked Fu Yanchuan, “Do you like kids?”

“No.”

Fu Yanchuan answered very firmly. Qi Xi followed up and asked, “Why?”

“I just need you. That’s enough.”

Qi Xi giggled. “Me too.”

Seeing that the person clearly didn’t understand, Fu Yanchuan gave up on thinking further about the question. Qi Xi was still too young to have any awareness of whether he wanted children or not.

But no matter what Qi Xi wanted, the result would never change. Even if, many years later, Qi Xi regretted it, Fu Yanchuan would never allow him to have children.

He didn’t answer anymore. Instead, he held Qi Xi’s face and kissed him deeply, silently pouring all his unspeakable desire into him.

In this lifetime, he would never reveal that his love was full of despicable possessiveness, selfishness, and jealousy. He would never be able to become a good person—only a good lover, restraining his shameful nature his entire life and being a good person only in Qi Xi’s eyes.

When the kiss ended, he pulled back and made a demand of Qi Xi.

“Xixi, in this life, you can only love me.”
