最佳契合 (Perfect Match) – 十九瑶

Chapter 18

7:55 AM.
A hectic Monday has finally started. Zheng Feiluan looked ahead and made sure he was perfect and ready for work. He tightened his tie, smoothed his cuffs and collar, and got into the condition he expected of himself.

7:58 AM.
The car rolled into the first floor of the Jiusheng Twin Towers and came to a stop under the wide porte-cochère.

The floor supervisor rushed over as soon as they saw Zheng Feiluan, opened the door, clearly having been waiting, and greeted them with a perfect big smile, “Good morning, President Zheng.”

Zheng Feiluan dipped his head and got out of the vehicle. His leather shoes, which were free of any dirt, shone as they stood firmly on the smooth gray stone.

He walked into the hallway without looking to the left or right. As he passed the supervisor, he blurted out a single sentence.

“Take off the tie and put on a different one.”

The supervisor drew back in horror, removed the so-called versatile tie, stashed it in his pocket, and shot a nearly hopeless glance at a coworker.

It was like a big, black storm cloud with thunder and rain had gone over the front desk inside the hotel. It looked like the air pressure dropped everywhere Zheng Feiluan went. The employees who were checking in and out guests tensed up and automatically lowered their heads, holding their breath and pretending to be still decorations on the wall.

They followed him out of the corners of their eyes, scared that if they made even the smallest sound, that living King Yama would suddenly turn around and come after them. At times like this, if Zheng Feiluan stopped in front of you, it usually meant your job was over.

Thankfully, or at least that’s how it appeared—his objective was obvious today. He walked straight to the elevators, not looking at the front desk once.

At last, the stress in the employees’ chests began to ease. Room cards were passed back and forth as fingers went back to keyboards.

But before anyone could finish breathing out, Zheng Feiluan’s look became dark. He stopped walking. He turned and walked straight back.

Clack.

In the corner, at Counter No. 5, an employee was checking in a young woman in a floral dress. He felt his fingers quiver under the weight of that towering shadow, and the hotel key card slid out of his grasp, clattering on the cold marble surface.

Out of fear, he ducked his head, “Apologies, President Zheng!”

Zheng Feiluan ignored him completely. Instead, he stared intently at the young woman, analyzing her features from forehead to nose and chin with the precision of a detective looking for a piece of evidence.

She blushed, “Y-you’re… Hello. C-can I help you with something?”

Zheng Feiluan said calmly, “I’m sorry to bother you, Miss. I noticed a very pleasant scent on you. It’s clean, pure, and easy to breathe in. Is that your pheromone?”

“Oh… N-no, I’m beta.” the young woman answered quickly, her blush intensifying. She awkwardly laughed, “I don’t have any scent that would affect you. I don’t have any smell at all, like plain water. But the scent I hope you’re smelling… should be my perfume.”

“Which brand?”

Distracted by his face, she completely forgot about the brand. After she fumbled around, embarrassed, she opened her purse and browsed through it in a panic. Then, amazingly, she found it.

“This one right here!”

The bottle is a frosted emerald-green glass. The label is in the shape of a basket. A single bud of a lily of the valley leans diagonally across the label. Below, a line of silver cursive writing:

Muguet des Bois.

Woodland Lily of the Valley.

Zheng Feiluan took the bottle and pushed the nozzle.

The air was filled with a fine mist that was pleasant, fresh, and pure. It brought back the world’s natural, warmer colors, like a quiet spell being cast. It was rain that was sliding down the glass pane after pane, wiping away debris and filth, leaving behind a window that was clean and a view that was unobstructed and clear after the storm.

Blue went back to being blue. Green went back to being green.

Zheng Feiluan looked at the bottle, his thumb tracing the slender stem etched on it, seemingly refusing to let go.

The young woman spoke with hesitation, “I’ve… I’ve already used more than half of it. It doesn’t cost much. You can have it if you like it.”

“Thank you.”

Zheng Feiluan accepted it without protest, locking his fingers around the glass, “Do you often stay at Jiusheng hotels?”

She was caught off guard, scratched her head, and answered honestly, “N-not really. Jiusheng’s too expensive. I’m on a business trip this time and can get reimbursed, so I’m staying for two nights. If it were my trip, I probably wouldn’t…”

He nodded in understanding before turning to the front desk employee.

“Waive this lady’s bill.” he said. “For a year.”

“Y-yes, President Zheng!” The employee answered right away.

Zheng Feiluan tucked the perfume bottle away and bowed slightly to the girl.

“Thank you for the gift.”

“Y-you’re welcome…”

The young woman watched as he walked away. It took her a long time to realize what “President Zheng” actually meant. Her eyes widened, and she put her hand over her lips.

Zheng Feiluan stepped into his office right on time at exactly 8 AM.

From the carpet to the ceiling, everything was immaculate. Every object had been arranged according to his preferences, placed at the most visually acceptable angle in the most appropriate position.

A narrow-necked porcelain vase on the desk held a bouquet of lily of the valley—fresh leaves, delicate blossoms.

Yu Yue stood nearby, tense as a defendant awaiting judgment.

Zheng Feiluan glanced at the flowers. His expression remained calm; he didn’t explode in rage like he had last week. Yu Yue knew this meant approval. She clenched her fist in excitement.

“Good morning, President Zheng!”

“Good morning.”

He actually responded.

That long-lost trace of gentlemanly courtesy stunned Yu Yue for a full three seconds.

“I have a task for you.” Zheng Feiluan stated, bringing out the frosted perfume bottle, “Everyone working on the fifty-fifth floor, men and women alike, go buy one and carry it with you. As for everything else around me—incense, hand soap, cleaning sprays—anything that can be replaced, replace it. All of it. Same scent.”

He never gave reasons for his commands. Yu Yue got used to it. She said yes and took the bottle.

She looked at the bottle’s design as she was leaving the office, and her head tingled.

Lily of the Valley. Again?

Earlier, when she called Cheng Xiu from the flower shop, she caught the word “lily of the valley” in a moment of desperation and picked a bouquet on a whim.

A blind cat stumbled across a dead mouse—and it actually worked.

At this rate, tomorrow she will have to buy the whole flower shop.

As Yu Yue continued to stare at the perfume bottle, a chill ran up her spine as a frightening alpha pheromone—seven parts sharp aggression and three parts raw dominance—brushed past her.

Diverting her gaze, she squirmed.

An alpha with a white shirt walked into Zheng Feiluan’s office.

A nuclear bomb went off inside in an instant.

Two distinct alpha pheromones nearly tore the air and shattered the glass as they surged in concentration at the same time. The two alpha pheromones surged in concentration like unruly male lions unleashed into an arena, unbothered by each other’s hostility or need for blood.

Yu Yue knew who the visitor was. She ran away as fast as she could, hugging the perfume bottle to her chest.

The visiting alpha stood at more than 1.85 meters and looked almost identical to Zheng Feiluan on the face. He maintained a safe distance as he leaned casually against the doorway, his hand in his pocket.

“What brings you here?”

Looking at the unwelcome visitor, Zheng Feiluan rested his back on the leather chair, his eyes unwavering and cold.

The man raised his right hand, grinned, and slowly spread his fingers.

With a clinking sound, a shimmering pendant slid from his palm, caught midair by a thin silver chain and softly swaying.

It was a jade pendant—clear, watery green, teardrop-shaped, and about the size of a pigeon’s egg. Unfortunately, a hideous crack split it cleanly down the center. Only half remained set into a base of broken diamonds; the other half was gone.

Zheng Feiluan’s demeanor grew even more sinister as soon as he laid eyes on it.

The alpha retrieved the pendant and stuffed it back into his pocket. With slightly narrowed eyes, he let out a laugh.

“We’re both Father’s sons. Jiusheng’s assets include my share as well,” he said calmly. “Why wouldn’t I go?”
