GV – Chapter 78

Mushiness and Being Liked

Song Zhiqing couldn’t answer the question right away, because as Ye Yuhuan spoke, she felt something cold being placed in her hand.

This shape… was it a soda?

Song Zhiqing held it up and saw it was a can of beer. She turned to Ye Yuhuan, pressing the can against her cheek. “Is this your way of giving me a sense of security? Letting me get you drunk?”

Ye Yuhuan shook her head.

“My way of giving you a sense of security is to give you the right to get me drunk anytime. You know it’s simple, powerful, and suitable to be the leash you keep me on.”

Song Zhiqing moved the can away. Her eyes, which had been rippling like a clear spring filled with fallen peach blossoms, shed that layer of flowers, returning to a transparent clarity.

“No way. You don’t remember anything after you get drunk.”

“And when you’re sober, you can endure anything. I have no desire to spend my days with a drunk.”

“That’s true. What should I do, then?” Ye Yuhuan sighed.

Seeing Ye Yuhuan frown in thought, Song Zhiqing worried she might actually go and get a real rope for her to tie her up with. Honestly, where did she get all these extreme ideas?

She had no interest in things like imprisonment, restriction, or seductive submission. Song Zhiqing only wanted a Ye Yuhuan who would love her as naturally as one would want a drink of water.

“Why do you think I don’t have a sense of security? Is it because of the trending topic? If you don’t like it, I can have it taken down right away.”

Ye Yuhuan’s expression relaxed, and she smiled a little sheepishly. “I like the trending topic. I quite like this feeling of being so closely connected to you.”

Song Zhiqing raised her eyes. “Then why?”

“You still haven’t scolded me for what happened in Europe,” Ye Yuhuan said, her words nothing short of astonishing.

And she presented her evidence: “Shen Wei gave Shangguan Xianxian the cold shoulder because she went abroad. And when Shen Wei came back last time, Shangguan Xianxian even had to write her a letter of guarantee. But we’re a couple too, and you didn’t react at all.”

Ye Yuhuan held up five fingers. “We were separated for five months because of an accident!”

“Huh?”

“Why are you making comparisons like that? Every couple is different,” Song Zhiqing said, deflecting.

“Oh.” Ye Yuhuan nodded.

Then she asked, “So, do you have a sense of security?”

“…No.”

After a moment’s hesitation, she said it.

The topic of security seemed dangerous to Song Zhiqing. After all, at its core, a lack of security was just a lack of trust in the other person.

What would Ye Yuhuan think? Even Song Zhiqing knew that Ye Yuhuan had already done everything she possibly could as a girlfriend. Was she being too demanding?

However, Ye Yuhuan made Song Zhiqing understand that she became a top student not just because she was smart, but because she had a desire to improve.

“So I should be a little more clingy.”

By drawing on Shen Wei’s love-struck behavior, Ye Yuhuan came up with a general principle.

Then she offered the following explanation—

“I was worried you’d find a clingy me too childish, so I’ve been holding myself back. But since you feel insecure, I can only ask you not to find a clingy me too annoying.”

Annoying? If Ye Yuhuan could shrink, Song Zhiqing would want to wear her around her neck every day.

So Song Zhiqing blurted out, “I wouldn’t find you annoying at all! In fact, you can be even clingier than the clingiest you can imagine. I can totally handle it!”

Ye Yuhuan was now aghast. “Have I made you feel that insecure?!”

Song Zhiqing turned to the side, reached out to pinch her nose, and said with a straight face, “It’s because I like you so much.”

“Ah, I see.”

Ye Yuhuan, who could calm down quickly even after such a passionate kiss, started to blush furiously at this simple, lighthearted confession.

The culprit, Miss Song Zhiqing, mischievously placed a hand on her earlobe. Through the contrast in temperature, Ye Yuhuan could clearly feel that if her ear could produce smoke, it would be smoking already.

She felt as if she had turned into the rabbit Song Zhiqing loved to dress her up as, and her little tail was being held firmly in Song Zhiqing’s palm, leaving her unable to move, curled up pitifully on the spot.

She pleaded softly, “Don’t do that in the future, saying such mushy things so suddenly.”

“It’s… it’s weird.”

Of course, she was the one being weird.

Song Zhiqing rubbed Ye Yuhuan’s ear again, causing the side of her body not pressed against the bed to tremble slightly.

“But that’s not fair.”

As she spoke, she rubbed it again.

She was definitely bullying her.

Ye Yuhuan couldn’t help but raise a hand to capture the mischievous little hand. The corners of her eyes were slightly red, clearly visible when she looked up, which made Song Zhiqing have a sudden crisis of conscience and freeze.

She only continued with the rest of her sentence: “You can confess to me, so I want to be able to confess to you, too.”

“You can, but not so suddenly. The topic changes too fast, it’s hard for me to react.”

React in time to pretend to be calm?

Song Zhiqing pouted, then cleared her throat and adopted the tone of a news anchor. “Miss Ye Yuhuan, please prepare yourself. In the next minute, I will be expressing my affection for you.”

Huh? That’s not what I meant!

Before Ye Yuhuan could stop her, she heard Song Zhiqing begin to cast her spell: “Ye Yuhuan, I like you the most in the whole wide world!”

Oh no, I’m even more embarrassed now.

But amidst her shyness, Ye Yuhuan still remembered her recent promise—to be clingy.

“I also… like you the most in the whole wide world.”

Seeing the atmosphere becoming so sticky-sweet she could barely stand it, Ye Yuhuan quickly hit the brakes and tried to pick up the previous topic.

“So, why do you feel insecure?”

At these words, Song Zhiqing’s now-still hand suddenly gave Ye Yuhuan’s ear an agitated tug. Ye Yuhuan let out a muffled grunt of pain, and Song Zhiqing quickly leaned in to blow on it. The warm breath covering her tormented ear made Ye Yuhuan feel strangely uncomfortable.

After she was done, Ye Yuhuan’s expression returned to more or less how it was before. In a daze, she heard Song Zhiqing listing her faults next to her ear: “You dare ask me that question? Who was it that held back from confessing? Dragging me to watch steamy movies every day, I really don’t know what you were thinking.”

“But, didn’t you like Shangguan Xianxian back then?”

“I was lying to you.”

Speaking of which, Song Zhiqing got even angrier.

“Just look at you, acting like you’d cut me off the second I admitted I liked you. How could I dare confess?”

Song Zhiqing had previously worried that her excessive expectations and complaints would make Ye Yuhuan, a veteran commitment-phobe, shy away from love again. But now it seemed Ye Yuhuan valued this relationship far more than she had imagined.

Since Ye Yuhuan’s attitude was so good, she wouldn’t hold back. Just as Ye Yuhuan wished, it was time to settle the accounts.

“It made me afraid to be too obvious later on.”

“And even when I was obvious, you, this block of wood, still couldn’t see anything. You didn’t know I really liked you until I had to kiss you.”

“Also, back when you were in Europe, I only found out you were being hunted down after you lost contact. Even if we were just friends then, we were best friends. How could you hide that from me?”

Ye Yuhuan, who had been listening silently to the lecture, suddenly blurted out, “I knew you still cared about the Europe thing.”

Song Zhiqing was so angry she nearly fell over backward. “I said all that, and that’s the only sentence you remember?”

“Of course not.”

Just as Song Zhiqing was feeling relieved, Ye Yuhuan tactlessly said, “The way you were scolding me just now made me feel like we’re a middle-aged married couple.”

Song Zhiqing pursed her lips, forming a perfect, forty-five-degree fake smile. She felt her hands starting to get restless again.

This Ye Yuhuan… this stinking block of wood!

Then, Ye Yuhuan followed up with another out-of-the-blue question: “Do you want to go see my auntie?”

“Come to think of it, I’m very familiar with Auntie Gao and Uncle Song, but you haven’t met my auntie yet.”

If we’re going to be wives, we have to meet the parents first, right? Ye Yuhuan thought, for some reason.

Meanwhile, Song Zhiqing was thinking: Huh? Huh? Huh?

Why did the topic suddenly jump to meeting the parents!

“Of course I’d love to, but before that, aren’t you going to respond to my accusations?”

Ye Yuhuan’s eyes widened. She tapped her head. “I’ve remembered it all. I’ll change in the future.”

Stinking block of wood!

Song Zhiqing was so angry she rolled over, turning her back to Ye Yuhuan.

For the first time, Ye Yuhuan wondered if she wasn’t very smart. She was so frantic she almost called Shen Wei for help.

But then Song Zhiqing rolled back over. She rolled twice, the second time landing on top of her.

Song Zhiqing braced her hands on either side of Ye Yuhuan, their faces about two handbreadths apart. Ye Yuhuan thought she was going to resolve her anger by kissing her, but Song Zhiqing didn’t move any closer. Instead, she said, “At a time like this, you just need to apologize and say a few nice things, and I won’t be angry anymore. If you hugged me and coaxed me, I might even be happy.”

“But,” Ye Yuhuan frowned. She had never liked this kind of seemingly perfunctory action; it reminded her of her father, who only ever said pretty words. “Unimportant things can be dealt with like that, but important things should be answered with actions, right?”

Song Zhiqing sighed helplessly and lowered her head to nuzzle Ye Yuhuan’s forehead. “It’s not just ‘dealing with it.’ Doing that would make me feel like you like me.”

The spot on her skin still held the sensation of Song Zhiqing’s touch. Being close to Song Zhiqing was always so comfortable; it gave her a sense of security, like being placed in a soft nest. Ye Yuhuan now understood that this feeling… this was the feeling of being liked.

She lifted her head slightly, pressing her forehead against Song Zhiqing’s, and spoke in the intimate, quiet atmosphere. “I’m sorry. I won’t do that again. Thank you for your tolerance before, and thank you for your patience with me all this time. I will properly learn how to love you.”

“Finally, thank you for liking me.”

“I feel incredibly happy because of it.”

Now, it was Song Zhiqing’s turn to think Ye Yuhuan was being mushy.

However, she had always liked mushiness.
