“I know.” On the other end of the line, Lu Zhao’s magnetic voice traveled through the receiver, sounding as if he were right beside him.

Lu Zhao didn’t ask why Zhou Zefeng was calling so late at night, and the two of them simply remained silent like this. The surroundings were deathly quiet; if it weren’t for the sound of Lu Zhao’s breathing, Zhou Zefeng would have thought the other party had hung up.

“I can’t sleep.” Zhou Zefeng said in a muffled voice.

“En.” Lu Zhao had guessed as much.

“Why aren’t you asleep yet?”

“I was woken up by you.” Lu Zhao let out a yawn. “You can’t sleep? Do you want me to sing you a lullaby?”

Zhou Zefeng’s face felt hot, and he said, “No, I just wanted to ask what the name of your aromatherapy candle is? I want to buy it.”

Lu Zhao rattled off a string of English, and then said, “Even if you buy it now, it’s impossible for it to arrive immediately. Do you absolutely have to call in the middle of the night?”

“I don’t know why, I just wanted to call you.”

Lu Zhao froze for a moment.

“I can’t sleep, so don’t even think about sleeping either.”

Lu Zhao: ……

Lu Zhao: “I’m hanging up.”

“Hey! Wait…” Zhou Zefeng looked at the screen, but Lu Zhao had already hung up. Just as expected, he had been completely ruthless, not hesitating for even a moment.

When he dialed back again, Lu Zhao refused to answer. Fearing that Lu Zhao might block him, and seeing the second hand tick past twelve o’clock, Zhou Zefeng sent a text message over.

[The Mid-Autumn moon is full and bright; may your dreams be just as sweet! May the sweetness of Mid-Autumn mooncakes bring you health and togetherness. Wishing you a joyful Mid-Autumn Festival! [Moon][Mooncake][Jade Rabbit Pounding Medicine]]

Lu Zhao replied within seconds: [Are you a dumbass? Check what today’s date is.]

Looking at the fourteenth day of the eighth lunar month on the calendar, Zhou Zefeng was rendered speechless, suddenly seized by the urge to block the classmate who had sent him this exact greeting earlier that day. Biting the bullet, he replied: [An early blessing. Hurry up and pick up the phone.]

Lu Zhao finally answered the call, his tone lazy and carrying a hint of weariness. “Don’t you ever sleep?”

“I’m not in the dorm.” Zhou Zefeng was still breathing slightly hard. Gazing up at the moon that was just a fraction away from being completely full, he said, “Just finished running.”

“Strenuous exercise before bed causes excessive dopamine secretion, leaving your brain and body in an excited state. You’ll find it even harder to sleep at night.”

“…Aren’t you going to ask me why?” Without waiting for Lu Zhao to take the initiative to ask, Zhou Zefeng explained of his own accord, “You told me I couldn’t do that for a week, so—”

Lu Zhao’s brow furrowed. “Aren’t…” Lu Zhao had originally wanted to say, aren’t we already on bad terms? But in the next instant, inspiration struck, and he suddenly caught the subtext behind Zhou Zefeng’s words.

“I get what you’re implying now.”

He understood that quickly? Had he been that obvious? Had Lu Zhao accepted it that easily? Zhou Zefeng’s heart pounded wildly. Right after, his phone chimed with a text message notification; it was a string of English sent by Lu Zhao, something like “cum control”.

“You know how to use Twitter, right? Go search for this ID. I’ve watched her videos; the quality is very high, and she’s really pretty. Go ahead and DM her yourself.”

Hearing this, Zhou Zefeng realized something was off. He asked in confusion, “What do you mean by that?”

Lu Zhao felt as if a halo of holy light were practically shining over his head. Aside from his patients, he had never been this patient with anyone—then again, Zhou Zefeng could technically be considered his patient. Thinking about it this way eased some of the conflict in Lu Zhao’s mind, yet he still secretly decided that from today onward, he really shouldn’t get involved with Zhou Zefeng anymore.

He was afraid he wouldn’t be able to control himself.

Lu Zhao had no idea that at the other end of the line, Zhou Zefeng had completely turned into a stone sitting on the vast sports field.

In the short dozens of days since knowing Lu Zhao, Zhou Zefeng had lost count of how many times he had been left choked up and speechless.

Zhou Zefeng: “Are you and her… close?”

“Not close. Even though we follow each other, we’ve never chatted at all, so it depends on your own luck.” Lu Zhao let out a yawn. “Don’t call me anymore in the future if there’s nothing important, and don’t mass-send those Mid-Autumn text blessings to me either.”

Zhou Zefeng brought the receiver closer to his lips and said, “In your dreams.”

Lu Zhao was startled by the suddenly amplified volume. At the same time, he felt as if Zhou Zefeng’s deep words were whispered right against his ear, causing him to involuntarily shiver.

While Lu Zhao was still dazed, Zhou Zefeng added, “Goodnight, Dr. Lu. See you tomorrow.”

With that, he hung up the phone.

With a swipe of his hand, Lu Zhao dragged Zhou Zefeng’s phone number straight into his blacklist.

A straight man who flirts with a gay man will be impotent for life.

[Number 30, Zhou Zefeng, please proceed to Consultation Room 2.]

The cold electronic voice rang out. Lu Zhao opened the door and looked up, his gaze meeting Zhou Zefeng’s right at the entrance of the consultation room.

He hadn’t expected they would actually meet. Lu Zhao pinched the bridge of his nose, pulling up his professional standards to cast aside his personal emotions. Taking Zhou Zefeng’s medical record and treatment card, he asked, “Did you experience any adverse reactions while taking the medication? Has the insomnia eased up after stopping the medication compared to before you took it?”

Zhou Zefeng remained silent, his eyes fixed on Lu Zhao’s busy hands.

Lu Zhao held the treatment card in his fingers and swiped it across the machine, which let out a soft beep. He then flipped open the medical record while his other hand moved the mouse, his skin looking so fair it was somewhat dazzling.

Zhou Zefeng couldn’t help but repeatedly look back on the videos he had watched last night.

He had copied the girl’s ID and searched for it. He didn’t follow her but instead flipped through her following list—good grief, she followed two to three hundred people. Zhou Zefeng browsed until his eyes were practically going blind before he finally managed to find Lu Zhao’s account.

His ID was very simple, called “Control Desire,” and his homepage had only a handful of updates, all of which were videos. The captions for the videos were also incredibly simple, just a uniform sequence of numbers; he had never posted any photos of his personal life or text updates.

Zhou Zefeng had stayed up all night watching those six videos countless times.
