There were changes not only in his words and gaze but also in his behavior. First, his attitude towards Minato had changed. The overt sense of surveillance that had once made Minato feel like he was being controlled was gone. Lately, it felt like Ogiwara was genuinely concerned for him.

The rides to and from work, and even the insistence on bringing Minato back to this apartment, were clearly acts of overprotectiveness due to Minato’s injured ankle. Even outside of that, Ogiwara was anticipating his needs, paying attention to him in a somewhat awkward but undeniably meticulous way.

The problem was that Minato didn’t understand the reason behind these changes. It was clear that the incident on the stairs was the trigger, but he couldn’t believe that would be enough to explain such a drastic shift in attitude.

As he exhaled softly with his cheek against the pillow, Minato heard a sound from behind the sliding door. Feeling a sense of foreboding, he turned his face back toward the wall and closed his eyes. There was a faint sound of the door opening, followed by quiet footsteps and the rustling of clothes. The bed springs creaked, and it sank as someone sat down. Without hesitation, a familiar presence entered the bed.

“…….Minato-sensei?” The low voice calling out next to his ear sent shivers against his skin. As the presence drew closer, something soft brushed against him from above.

The warmth that reached him made the skin on his body stir. While trying desperately to suppress it, long arms wrapped around his back, pulling him in, as the back of his head was nuzzled against. After that, the warmth behind him remained still.

It was Minato who suggested they sleep together in this double-sized bed.

The morning after Minato first stayed in this room, he woke up alone in the bed. Noticing Ogiwara’s absence, he peeked into the living room, where Ogiwara was sleeping on the one-seater sofa, his jacket thrown over him.

The next night, even when midnight came and Ogiwara hadn’t come, Minato thought he might be overreacting. But when he went to check the living room, Ogiwara was sitting on the same sofa as the night before, his tall frame bent awkwardly.

On a night in early April, it was not warm enough indoors for one to sleep comfortably in just a jacket. Minato immediately woke him up and asked why he was sleeping there. Ogiwara replied that the injured person should rest alone. When Minato insisted that he at least use a blanket, Ogiwara said there were no spare blankets here. Even when Minato shoved a blanket from the bed toward him, Ogiwara refused it, insisting that the injured person should come first.

“It’s fine like this. I’m used to it.”

Minato couldn’t quite swallow that answer and blurted out, “Then let’s sleep together in the bed.”

He then continued; “Since it’s a double, there’s enough space for both of us. Anyway, you can’t sleep with just a jacket on there.”

Ogiwara made a very complicated expression. After looking intently at Minato’s face as if confirming something, he asked cautiously. “Is that really okay with you, Sensei?”

The result of his nodding was the current situation. However, there was one major change.

Staring at the wall in front of him, Minato gently traced his own cheek with his fingers.

He remembered the fleeting touch of Ogiwara’s lips that had brushed against him earlier.

Since the day he started staying here, Ogiwara had stopped touching Minato in ways other than those kinds of kisses.

They had kissed a few times, just pressing their lips together. He had been pulled close a couple of times, though not often. Especially at night, before going to sleep, Ogiwara always pulled Minato into his arms like this, placing kisses on his forehead, eyes, and lips.

However, that’s all. There is no meaningful caress of the throat or jaw, no kiss so intense that it leaves him breathless as they pass each other, no disheveling of clothing or teasing of his vulnerable spots.

What does this mean? As Minato quietly counts the soft breaths near his ear, he wonders to himself.

It’s because it’s convenient, because their bodies fit well together, and because it’s useful. For Ogiwara, Minato’s value is only that. He decided to care because he was somewhat fond of him—like a toy, something to be discarded once he tires of it.

But would he really hold someone he’s grown bored of like this, while taking such care and treating them with such overprotection?

Thinking this, a sigh escapes him. —Even though he knows it’s impossible, every time he’s embraced by these arms, he finds himself dreaming convenient dreams. He wants to believe that there must be a reason for this kind of touch, that there’s something more to it… He wants to have unreasonable hope.

Clenching his back teeth, Minato becomes aware of his still aching and uncomfortable ankle.

Once Ogiwara lost interest in Minato’s body, this relationship was over. Right now, Ogiwara is only taking care of him because of his injury, because he’s being protective. In that case, it’s better not to have any strange expectations.

Minato gently presses his palm against the long arm that holds his waist and wraps around his abdomen. Carefully checking for any signs of movement, he lets out a quiet breath.

He knows it, but… still…

Suppressing the growing expectations, Minato tightens his fingers around his own hand. Perhaps it’s just his imagination, but the arm around his waist seems to tighten just a little as well.

*Translator’s Note: At this point, Ogiwara should have just been honest about his feelings. Unless he’s dumb and doesn’t know that what he feels is love. Ugh. -K
