Qin Qing looked at Cang Ming, and Cang Ming looked back at Qin Qing. The air, once thin and fragrant with wine, suddenly grew thick.
996 stood on its hind legs, clenched its chubby paws, and said expectantly, “Four words—I like you. Simple, right?”
Qin Qing looked away first. He swirled the amber liquid in his glass casually, saying silently, “How could it be simple?”
“It’s so simple. Just say it. Say it, and it’s done.” 996 waved its fists excitedly.
“Say it, and what happens to me?” Qin Qing took a sip, then turned to watch the dancing couples on the floor, avoiding Cang Ming’s unreadable gaze.
“Say it, and the plot moves forward.”
“And what is the plot?”
“Uh, well…” 996 was speechless.
Qin Qing smiled: “You don’t have to say it. I can guess. If an ordinary person is confessed to, whether they like the person or not, they’d feel some secret pleasure. But Cang Ming is different. I talk about poetry; he says it’s pretentious. I admire the scenery; he points out the shadows behind it. He’s just that dull. He has no extra emotions to waste. My confession would be a nuisance to him. To get rid of that nuisance, he’d fire me and send me packing. Right?”
996: “…” Damn it, had Qin Qing read the script?
Qin Qing sipped his drink and smiled faintly: “I don’t like boring people, so I won’t confess. Besides, saying ‘I like you’ when you don’t is a form of deception. And I hate deception.”
996 shouted angrily: “But I just helped you. You can’t go back on your word.”
“But I never agreed to help you.”
996: “…” So angry. It felt like its whole cat body was about to explode.
While the one-person-one-cat argued, Cang Ming was drinking glass after glass. The waiter, who had been circulating with drinks, now stood frozen beside him, holding the tray, watching helplessly as this icy man downed glass after glass of such strong liquor. The man seemed not to feel the burn, perhaps because deep inside he was suppressing something even more fiery, even more painful. The waiter thought sympathetically.
Zhou Linlin, hiding behind Cang Ming, also took a glass of liquor. She took a tentative sip, then gathered her courage: “President Cang, I’m starting a business. Would you be interested in hearing my proposal?”
Cang Ming looked down at her. Beneath his dark pupils burned a scorching flame, yet also a piercing cold. Zhou Linlin felt frozen. Cang Ming was so scary. How did Qin Qing manage to stay so calm and chat with him?
Snapping back to reality, Qin Qing said gently, “What proposal? Tell me. If it looks promising, I’ll invest.”
Zhou Linlin immediately ran to Qin Qing, pulled out her phone, and enthusiastically explained her plan.
Cang Ming listened for a while, but when he saw Qin Qing’s attention fixed solely on Zhou Linlin, he put down his glass and said, “I’m leaving.”
Leaving early was his habit.
Qin Qing looked up and nodded with a smile: “Alright, President Cang. Take care.”
An elegant smile, a proper demeanor, familiar yet distant- that was always Qin Qing. Cang Ming stood for another moment, watching Qin Qing continue to discuss the business plan with Zhou Linlin, then finally strode away. At the entrance, he looked back, his eyes dark and unreadable.
“President Cang, where to?” the driver asked respectfully.
He thought of a certain address, but what came out was something that surprised even him: “Find this person.”
He handed his phone to the driver. The driver looked at the unfamiliar face on the screen and nodded: “Understood. I’ll have someone find him right away.” He was a former special forces soldier who ran his own security company; finding people was his specialty. Half an hour later, a black luxury car stopped by the shimmering river. Cang Ming stepped out and walked up to a boy. The boy sat on the riverbank, his head buried in his knees, crying in despair.
His cracked phone screen displayed a heartless message: [Let’s break up.]
Cang Ming looked down at the boy. No sympathy, no pity, no care. He could never understand this boring world. Yet he had come here anyway.
“Do you want to win her back?” He asked coldly.
The boy looked up, his tear-streaked face stunned. If Qin Qing were here, he would recognize the boy as the boyfriend of the girl from the proposal.
“You, you are…” The boy seemed to find Cang Ming familiar. His stunned expression turned to disbelief.
A damp, cool breeze blew in, making Cang Ming frown impatiently.
“Do you want to win back your girlfriend?” Cang Ming asked again.
Several burly men in black got out of the luxury car and surrounded them, watching the surroundings warily. This imposing entourage, this overwhelming presence, and this handsome yet cold face often seen in financial news…
The boy quickly stood up, looking at Cang Ming helplessly. He recognized him. This was someone he would never have met in his life.
Cang Ming took out his phone and played a video, his voice deep: “After you left, she cried very hard.”
He couldn’t empathize, but oddly, he was very good at finding others’ weaknesses. The boy looked at the phone. His embarrassed, slightly flushed face turned deathly pale. His beloved girl was crying, heartbroken and distraught, while everyone around her insulted and humiliated her.
“Cheap,” “ungrateful,” “no one wants her.” How could those words be so cruel? And how could he have just walked away, leaving her in such a humiliating position? No wonder she wanted to break up. He had shattered her heart.
“Do you want to win her back?” Cang Ming asked the same question again.
Even he didn’t understand why he was being so patient with this utterly boring, irrelevant matter.
The boy nodded quickly, tears streaming: “Yes.”
Cang Ming sighed in relief, then said seriously, “I’ll help you.”
After returning from the banquet, Qin Qing had showered and sat on the balcony with wet hair, enjoying the breeze. The air conditioning inside and the summer heat outside created a strange sensation of melting. Qin Qing fiddled with a rose blooming by his temple while casually playing with his phone. 996 had disappeared again, this time even angrier. Suddenly, a text message appeared. Qin Qing opened it and found a video from Cang Ming.
“Still sending work this late.” He shook his head.
He wasn’t wrong to think that, since Cang Ming was famously a workaholic. Every message he sent was work-related. But this time, Qin Qing was wrong.
The video showed a boy holding a huge bouquet of roses, shouting under an apartment building: “Doudou, I love you. Please marry me. Doudou, don’t break up with me. Give me one more chance.”
The camera panned up to show the building. At the commotion, people came out onto their balconies. But the girl never appeared. The boy shouted for a few more minutes, then turned helplessly to look at someone off-screen. The camera followed his gaze. Qin Qing raised his eyebrows in shock. That person was Cang Ming. Why would he bother with something so trivial?
Before Qin Qing could think further, Cang Ming raised his arm and waved. The camera moved up to the sky. In the dark sky, specks of light appeared, slowly forming colorful photos of a man and woman hugging, chasing, playing. They were laughing so happily. In reality, those photos must exist, proof of the boy and girl’s journey from meeting to falling in love, carrying their best memories. This drone show, its sincerity, its thoughtfulness, its cost, far exceeded the previous rich kid’s display.
People on the balconies looked up in awe. The once-dark, starless, moonless sky was now illuminated by the lights of the world. Qin Qing was captivated, his eyes moist and warm. Such sights touched him deeply. He believed that even a girl whose heart had been broken would be moved. Indeed, the girl, who had been watching from behind her curtains, stepped onto the balcony.
The boy was stunned, then overjoyed. He knelt on one knee, holding up the roses: “Doudou, marry me. I love you.”
The girl covered her mouth and cried. This proposal came late, but it was so grand that it made up for all her humiliation. Look, her boyfriend was no worse than anyone. Look, her boyfriend still loved her the most. Urged on by her roommates, the girl came downstairs. They dropped the roses and embraced. People on the balconies cheered excitedly, offering sincere blessings. The video ended there, but Qin Qing couldn’t look away.
His phone buzzed with a message: [Do you like this scenery?]
Qin Qing looked at the message, his eyes glistening with wet, sparkling light.
He slowly covered his face with his hand, exhaling deeply. Then he pressed the voice message button, let out a low, soft laugh, and finally sighed: “President Cang, you’re not boring at all. You’re amazing.”
Cang Ming stood outside the crowd, watching the embracing couple with cold indifference. The cheers, laughter, shouts, and blessings were all repelled by his icy aura. He had orchestrated this scene, but he couldn’t connect with it. Just then, a message arrived. He immediately looked down and saw a voice message. He opened it. No voice came out, just a short, soft, pleasant laugh, like a small jade bead falling into a still lake, stirring ripples. Cang Ming’s cold eyes warmed.
“You’re not boring at all. You’re amazing.” The words were laced with laughter, revealing how joyful the speaker was.
Cang Ming’s thin lips curled into an almost imperceptible smile. He didn’t know if the lights of the world were beautiful, but he knew the sound of a flower blooming was enchanting. The strong liquor he had been drinking finally seemed to take effect. Cang Ming’s deep eyes grew hazy, then turned into a burning intoxication. He listened to that message over and over…
