DA chapter 64

Due date (24)

Lin Jia looked at Yan Xu calmly.

He said nothing, and even the corners of his mouth stayed flat.

If Yan Xu had ever worked under Lin Jia, he would have known that this was his usual “cold-eyed observation,” which meant: ‘I’m giving you a look. Understand it yourself. Can’t understand? Report to HR.’

But Yan Xu had been pulled into the Underwater Wold before even graduating university. He had never experienced the workplace, and even in the Underwater Wold he looked down on the people from the Management Office, let alone facing a mere “accountant.”

“What?” Yan Xu retorted. “You dare be angry but don’t dare admit it?”

Lin Jia felt that this person really had no sense at all. Seeing that Yan Xu was determined to get to the bottom of it, Lin Jia slowly parted his lips and declared again, “I’m not angry.”

Yan Xu laughed softly, took out his phone, and snapped a photo of Lin Jia.

Lin Jia frowned in displeasure.

Yan Xu admired the photo on his phone, trying to find proof that Lin Jia was angry. When he looked up and saw Lin Jia frowning, he took another photo recklessly.

The second photo was obviously solid evidence. He pushed the phone toward Lin Jia’s face. “See? Your face looked even worse just now.”

Lin Jia glanced at the phone screen once, then looked back at Yan Xu.

Yan Xu put away the phone, raising an eyebrow. “Why are you angry? What did I do to offend you?”

This person had already decided that he was angry, so explaining again that he wasn’t was pointless. Lin Jia could not be bothered to explain anymore. Looking at Yan Xu, he calmly asked, “Captain Yan, do you care about me that much?”

Yan Xu was amused by Lin Jia instead. “I just…”

Lin Jia: “You ignored looking for the Soup Base and instead chased after why I was angry. If that isn’t caring, then what is? But why care? Because of that kiss just now?”

Lin Jia looked sideways at Yan Xu without giving him a chance to speak. “Was that Captain Yan’s first kiss?”

Yan Xu froze for a moment, then stiffly said, “Who said that was my first—”

“Whether or not it was your first kiss is irrelevant.” Lin Jia smoothly continued. “If the kiss caused Captain Yan to have a heart-fluttering reaction and care about why I was angry, then that makes sense. But I suggest you figure out whether your interest is genuine or if your brain is occupied by the dopamine and endorphins produced by kissing, mistaking the euphoria similar to morphine and opium tablets for love.”

Yan Xu: “…”

He was stunned by Lin Jia’s rapid string of words. After a long while, he reacted. “No, who said I like you?”

“If you don’t like me, why should my reason for being angry be more important to Captain Yan than other people’s?” Lin Jia continued steadily. “Captain Yan personally saw the Fishman’s mutation. Delaying even a little longer would puts others in danger. Yet, instead of caring about other people’s safety, Captain Yan is preoccupied with what made me angry?”

As he spoke, Lin Jia put on a look of sincere curiosity and confusion. “Hm?”

Yan Xu: “…”

Yan Xu: “I…”

Lin Jia: “So, what’s in the VIP ward?”

Yan Xu admitted defeat: “…A woman.”

Lin Jia looked at him, waiting for him to continue.

Yan Xu ground his teeth in frustration. Not only had he gained nothing about why Lin Jia was angry, he had instead been dragged into Lin Jia’s line of words.

An accountant?

With that eloquence, being an accountant was a waste of talent!

He was not grateful at all for the step Lin Jia handed him, but that did not stop Yan Xu from taking it. He didn’t want to discuss love, liking, endorphins, or dopamine with Lin Jia at a time like this!

“There’s a woman lying on the hospital bed, pregnant,” Yan Xu said. “A circle of machines surrounds her, and the key point is those machines.”

Yan Xu glanced at Lin Jia at this point. Lin Jia had not moved his gaze away. Remembering Lin Jia’s earlier absurd speech, Yan Xu didn’t have the nerve to look him in the eye.

He quickly erected a fragile mental barrier before pretending that nothing had happened and meeting Lin Jia’s gaze. “Those machines are drawing the woman’s blood.”

Lin Jia did not show much surprise. Yile Maternal and Child Health Hospital could not possibly be a normal hospital, and the patients waiting for production there were not normal patients either.

He and Yan Xu had seen it with their own eyes—the thing produced was not a fetus, but a lump of flesh weighed and priced by the hospital.

Abnormal pregnancies, swollen abdomens, blood-drawing machines, lumps of flesh clearly priced by the hospital, and black shadows with family ties appearing after production…

At this moment, the Soup Base seemed clearer, but some details were still missing.

Who was the woman? What was her exact relationship with the black shadow? Who sent her here? How long had she been in the hospital?

Lin Jia asked, “Can we find the woman’s information in the hospital records?”

Yan Xu had previously risked his life to obtain the hospital records, but there was too much information, and the content was brief.

Still, the records could at least tell the woman’s hospitalization time, which would help fill in one detail of the Soup Base.

Yan Xu said, “There’s a patient information card hanging at the foot of her bed, but I couldn’t read it clearly. I only saw the character ‘Zhao.’”

That still counted as a gain.

Lin Jia said, “Captain Yan worked hard.”

Yan Xu snorted, clearly not accepting Lin Jia’s compliment.

“Brother Jia, Brother Jia.”

Xiao Yao came over quietly and called out in a low voice.

Lin Jia knew that Xiao Yao had come to remind them that the nurses had returned and that their free time was about to end.

The six people during free time had all matched their stories, and the nurses had not obtained confirmation of ownership of the compressed biscuit from the curly-haired man. Additionally, it was almost time for medicine, so the matter of the biscuit had to be dropped.

Everyone returned to their wards as the nurses pushed a cart delivering the day’s pills.

There were still details missing from the Soup Base. Even though they knew the pills had problems, everyone had no choice but to continue taking them because of the doctor’s orders.

Ward 302. After the nurse left, Yan Xu observed Lin Jia’s expression for a moment. Only after confirming that there were no abnormalities in Lin Jia’s expression did he take out the hospital records that had materialized earlier.

Now that they knew the VIP ward held a woman and had learned one character of her name, they screened the thick stack of hospital records.

They split the records in two and quickly searched through them.

The ward was as quiet as still water, with only the faint sounds of paper turning and breathing.

Even the cat did not make much noise when stretching lazily.

Very quickly, several records were screened out. Though they did not communicate, they tacitly exchanged the records they had selected.

These records had one thing in common: the patients were all female and had the character “Zhao” in their names.

Lin Jia finished reading first. Half a minute later, Yan Xu also finished browsing.

The two looked at each other, then both looked at the same record.
