~In Front of the Lecture Hall
The square where the event was held was filled with students — some proudly clutching prizes they’d won for completing missions, others laughing and chatting despite having failed their challenges.
Holding a microphone, the host announced the fastest pair to complete the haunted challenge.
> “And the champions of this year’s Courage Test are—Shi Zheyu and Liu Bingwei! Congratulations! Everyone, give them a big round of applause—and a few screams too!”
Thunderous applause and excited cheers echoed across the space in front of the lecture hall, celebrating the winning pair.
“Where’s Shuyi? Has anyone seen Shuyi?”
Dressed as a ghost, Jiang Yuxin wore a white sheet over her body and had eerie special-effects makeup on her face. No matter how much she searched, she couldn’t find Zhou Shuyi anywhere. She went around grabbing nearby students to ask.
“Haven’t seen him.”
“No idea.”
Neither Fang Zhengwen nor any of the junior staff members had seen him. Even Shi Zheyu, who had just finished receiving his prize, came over to tell her, “Not just Zhou Shuyi — Gao Shide’s missing too.”
“What? Both of them?” Jiang Yuxin’s eyes widened. “Zhengwen, let’s go check the spots where we set up the props again.”
“Yeah.”
Fang Zhengwen took Jiang Yuxin’s hand, ready to go back inside and search the building, when the host waved his phone to stop them.
“It’s fine. Shide just sent me a message. He said he and Zhou Shuyi got bored and went home early. He asked me to hang on to their phones, and they’ll come by after class tomorrow to pick them up.”
“Let me see that.”
Shi Zheyu snatched the phone from the host and opened the chat room. Sure enough, the message said exactly that.
“Again… it’s Zhou Shuyi.”
He let out a frustrated sigh and handed the phone back. Then, overwhelmed by emotion, he hurled the prize he’d just received onto the ground. His eyes were red as he turned away to leave.
“Hey! Shi Zheyu!”
Liu Bingwei, confused by his sudden outburst—especially since he’d been laughing cheerfully just moments before—quickly picked up the discarded prize and ran after him.
“Hey, this is the prize we promised to share! Don’t you want it?”
“Get out of my way!”
Jiang Yuxin glanced at Fang Zhengwen beside her, silently asking what was going on, but Fang Zhengwen only shook his head—he had no idea what had just happened between the two either.

~The Infirmary
After sending the message, Gao Shide closed the laptop and returned to the bed.
In truth, everything that had happened tonight had been orchestrated by him.
There was no way Pei Shouyi, who despised having his private space intruded upon, would ever have permitted the use of the infirmary for the courage test. In fact, there had never been any mission assigned there. The sudden blackout earlier had been caused by Gao Shide deliberately flipping the breaker. Even the loosened doorknob — that had been done beforehand with a screwdriver.
All of it had been for one purpose: to create a chance, before graduation, to be alone with Zhou Shuyi.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured softly. “I must’ve scared you all night.”
As he lay down, he gently placed Zhou Shuyi’s head on his arm and gazed at his sleeping face.
―――I want to keep watching you like this… I wish I could stop time tonight… just a little closer… if only I could stay by you a little longer…
The thoughts hidden in his heart were like the ‘yuugao’ flower from ‘The Tale of Genji’ — a blossom that blooms quietly in the deep hours of the night, unseen by others, and retreats to its hidden refuge before the morning sun can rise.
And so, until drowsiness finally overtook him, Gao Shide simply watched the one he loved in secret… and at last, drifted off into the same dream world where Zhou Shuyi already was.

The Next Morning―
The following morning, the school doctor arrived at work as usual. Outside the infirmary, he spotted a doorknob lying on the hallway floor. Picking it up, he unlocked the door—and stepped into a room that looked as if a small storm had passed through.
Sunlight poured through the barred window, shining softly across Gao Shide’s face. Half-asleep, he blinked his eyes open and saw a man standing at the foot of the bed with his arms crossed.
“Did you ‘touch’ him?”
Pei Shouyi was staring at the two people lying on the bed with a look of curiosity.
“Shh.”
Now fully awake, Gao Shide pressed a finger to his lips, silently gesturing toward the door, asking to talk outside. But Pei Shouyi didn’t move; he just stood there, still and unimpressed.
With no other choice, Gao Shide clasped his hands together in a pleading gesture and mouthed, “please”. Only then did Pei Shouyi finally turn and leave the room.
“Ow—”
Once Pei Shouyi was gone, Gao Shide grimaced as he tried to pull his arm out from under the sleeping Zhou Shuyi’s head. But his arm had gone numb after being trapped there all night—his elbow to his fingertips tingled with pins and needles. Using his right hand to steady his left, he carefully slipped it free from beneath Zhou Shuyi’s neck, finally reclaiming his arm.
He gazed tenderly at Zhou Shuyi’s back as he slept, brushing a few loose strands of hair from his cheek and tucking them behind his ear. Leaning closer, Gao Shide pressed a trembling kiss to that warm cheek. Then, in the same low, steady voice Zhou Shuyi had praised twice the night before, he whispered—
“When I said I liked you, it wasn’t a joke. When I said I’d break you two apart and take you for myself, that wasn’t a lie either. You once told me that the person I love is lucky—but unfortunately, you’ll never know the truth. Because that luck has always belonged to you. Zhou Shuyi… I love you.”
After that, Gao Shide stood up, stepped off the bed, drew the curtain closed, and quietly left the room. Out in the hallway, Pei Shouyi was waiting for him. Together, they walked off toward the storage room to fetch the medical supplies and gauze needed for the infirmary.
“…”
As soon as the curtain fell shut, Zhou Shuyi’s eyes snapped open. He reached one hand out from under the blanket and touched his cheek—the same spot where he had been kissed. His fingers lingered there, and his mind began to drift in silence.

*GLOSSARY:
–Tale of genji: Written by Murasaki Shikibu around the early 11th century, ‘The Tale of Genji’ follows Hikaru Genji, the exceptionally handsome son of the Japanese emperor. The story largely follows his romantic affairs, political career, relationships, family, and eventual decline, while exploring the fleeting nature of beauty, love, status, and life. This is what is normally written about him if you look in Wikipedia. I’ll just say he is the famous handsome playboy prince. Yuugao is just one of the many women he spent ‘time’ with. If you know what I mean. Well, anyway, Genji encounters the flower growing over a shabby-looking wall while passing through a poor neighborhood in Kyoto. He’s intrigued by it, especially because someone sends him a poem associated with the flower. The woman living there becomes known to him as Yuugao because he doesn’t initially know her real name. Genji is fascinated by her gentle, mysterious, almost childlike personality. He secretly takes her away to an abandoned mansion so that they can spend ‘time’ together away from society. Their relationship is very much in the style of Genji’s other secret affairs: he doesn’t openly acknowledge her as a partner, and Yuugao doesn’t really know the full extent of his identity or circumstances. She later dies, killed by the spirit of one of the playboy prince’s dead lovers. That’s about it. You can read the tale if you want…But be warned, it is Heian-era fuckboy literature (my personal opinion lol).
