~Classroom
“You’re early today. The sun must be rising from the west.”
When Fang Zhengwen walked into the classroom, he was surprised to see his best friend already sitting at his desk. But unlike usual, the earlycomer wasn’t reading or studying—he was simply resting his chin in his hand, staring blankly into space.
“Zhou Shuyi, you really ditched early yesterday just because it was boring? That’s cold, man.”
One of the club leaders who had entered the classroom behind Fang Zhengwen plopped down in the seat in front of Zhou Shuyi and grumbled.
“Yeah! Jiang Yuxin and I were racking our brains trying to come up with a way to scare you. And then you never even showed up!”
The main instigator, Jiang Yuxin, had even bought fake blood for acting, planning to spray it on the first coward who showed up for maximum realism.
Chatting away, none of them noticed that their friend’s mind was completely elsewhere. Then the club leader suddenly remembered that during yesterday’s class, the professor had talked about the exam material. Turning to another classmate who had come in with him, he asked—
“Hey, you got notes from yesterday’s lecture? Let me copy them.”
“Of course not. I don’t even have the textbook.”
“You say that like it’s something to be proud of.”
Fang Zhengwen gave up on borrowing and glanced sideways at Zhou Shuyi, who had his textbook open on the desk. Picking it up, he said—
“Shuyi, lend me your notes.”
Zhou Shuyi blinked as if waking from a trance, looking at the textbook that had been taken from him.
“What notes?”
“The test range the professor mentioned yesterday.”
“Oh.”
While his friend became absorbed in copying the notes, Zhou Shuyi pursed his lips tightly, hesitating for a while before finally gathering the courage to speak.
“Zhengwen, could you ask Yuxin if there’s going to be a group date coming up? You know, among the students from our department or something.”
“What’s up? You looking for a girlfriend?”
Dressed in his usual blue-and-white checkered shirt, Fang Zhengwen gave his best friend a sideways look.
“Yeah. I don’t mind if someone introduces me one either.”
“Out of nowhere? Why the sudden interest?”
Up until now, Zhou Shuyi had shown zero interest in any girls other than Jiang Yuxin—he’d always brushed off the idea of group dates or dating entirely. So Fang Zhengwen couldn’t help but wonder what had caused this sudden change.
Zhou Shuyi glared at him, sounding irritated.
“Who’s the one always flirting right in front of me, huh? I want to do that too.”
“Idiot! That’s your reason?”
“Come on, I’m serious. Please.”
He clasped his hands together, pleading.
“Alright, fine. I’ll ask around.”
Hearing that, Zhou Shuyi finally let out a sigh of relief. Leaning back in his chair, he rested his chin on his hand again and gazed absently at the students filing into the classroom—his thoughts drifting somewhere far away.

The Next Day―
When the lunch break arrived, students who had finished their morning classes streamed off campus to eat at nearby restaurants.
Wearing a black T-shirt, Zhou Shuyi sat at a table. He was rubbing his hands together or tracing the rim of his glass with a finger from time to time. His eyes flicked occasionally toward the restaurant entrance, nervous yet expectant, as he waited for someone.
A few minutes later, a girl with light brown hair and a long skirt stepped into the restaurant. After confirming her reservation with the host, she spotted the person she was looking for, waved happily, and was led to his table.
“Did I keep you waiting, senpai?”
The girl tucked her long hair behind one ear and smiled as she sat across from him.
“No.”
Zhou Shuyi swallowed hard and said, with a mix of formality and tension, “My treat today — go ahead and order whatever you like.”
“Thank you so much, senpai.”
He Jiaxing smiled shyly. For this lunch with the senior she liked, she’d bought a new outfit and even applied a touch of makeup, all to leave the perfect impression.
Just then, the phone in Zhou Shuyi’s pocket vibrated. He took it out and glanced at the message.
[Where are you? We agreed to have lunch together. Did you forget?]
It was from Gao Shide.
“What’s wrong?” He Jiaxing asked.
“Nothing.” Zhou Shuyi shook his head, turned the phone face-down on the table, and smiled lightly. “So, what do you want to order?”
“Hmm… I’ll take a bit more time to decide.”
“Sure. No rush.”
He couldn’t act as naturally as he did with his childhood friends. And there were no playful arguments like the ones he had with Liu Bingwei. And it was nothing like when he was with Gao Shide.
Every word, every smile, every gesture — all of it was careful, deliberate. He spoke more slowly than usual, made his tone softer on purpose, moved with cautious composure — trying to show his best side.
He Jiaxing, delighted, took out her phone and started snapping selfies. After several tries, she finally captured the perfect shot and showed it to Zhou Shuyi.
“People like you from the swim team are amazing, senpai. I want to take beach photos of myself swimming one day, like this.”
She had secretly liked him for a long time, but never found the courage to approach him. Sitting across from him now, she tried her best to come up with topics that might interest him — anything to keep the awkwardness away.
If Jiang Yuxin hadn’t told her that Zhou Shuyi wanted to meet a girl and offered to introduce them, she would’ve remained nothing more than a fan cheering from the stands during the swim team’s meets. Having lunch one-on-one with her crush like this — it felt like a dream.
“That’s nice,” Zhou Shuyi replied.
After all her effort to start a lively conversation, those were the only few flat words she got in return. Sensing his lack of enthusiasm, she quickly changed the subject.
“How about going to a baseball game sometime? I really enjoy watching matches when I have free time. I love cheering at the stadium.”
“That sounds good.”
“Or maybe bowling?”
“Sure.”
The more they talked, the heavier the air felt. Zhou Shuyi’s smile began to stiffen. Finally, to cut off her endless suggestions, he raised his hand to call a waiter.
“Excuse me, we’re ready to order.”
“Yes, of course. What would you like?”
“We’ll take the lunch set. As for the appetizer…”
While the waiter jotted down their order, He Jiaxing sat there, a little confused by his subdued mood — but when he looked her way again, she still gave him her brightest, most hopeful smile.
