~Locker Room

“Damn it! He humiliated me in front of all those people! Ow—!”

Zhou Shuyi yanked open his locker, intending to grab his necklace and belongings, but because he pulled too hard, the door slammed right into his face.

He pressed a hand against the sore spot and swore under his breath.

Fang Zhengwen and Liu Bingwei, who had just entered the locker room, assumed their prideful and competitive friend was still shaken from losing the match, so they guided him to sit down on the bench in front of the lockers.

“Don’t worry about it. You’re safe, that’s what matters,” Liu Bingwei added in support of Fang Zhengwen’s comforting words.

“Yeah. Falling into the pool? Anyone who’s taken swimming lessons has been through that dozens of times. Look on the bright side—you’ve probably become famous around school now.”

“The worst part is—it’s all his fault! He embarrassed me.”

To humiliate me like that… in front of the girl I like…

He clenched his fists. I’ll pay him back for this. Definitely.

Just as he swore it to himself, his expression shifted as if realizing something, and he glared at his friend sitting beside him.

“Why didn’t you tell me he was joining this competition too?”

That sharp glare made Liu Bingwei’s heart nearly stop for a second.

He scratched the back of his head and mumbled, “Sorry. I thought it was a new member who just happened to have the same name.”

As the captain of the swim team and organizer of the freshman welcome tournament, Liu Bingwei had already reviewed the participant list.

But it had never even crossed his mind that Gao Shide—who hated water and couldn’t swim to save his life—would sign up for a competition in his fourth year.

“Cut him some slack, will you? Shide’s been your friend for years…”

Fang Zhengwen tried to smooth things over, but Zhou Shuyi cut him off.

“Friend for years? He’s been a pain in my ass since fifth grade—elementary, middle school, high school, all the way! I thought I was finally free of him when I got into college, but no! He transfers in again in our second year! Damn it! I’ve put up with him long enough. This time, I’m not letting it slide!”

The more Zhou Shuyi spoke, the louder his voice grew—until everyone in the locker room could hear his furious rant.

“You’re right. We can’t let that guy look down on us. Got a plan? Count me in!” His best friend Liu Bingwei slapped his chest in eager agreement.

“That’s my guy!” Zhou Shuyi grasped Liu Bingwei’s hand tightly.

Seeing their joined hands, Liu Bingwei’s heart secretly fluttered with joy.

Their alliance sealed as the two exchanged mischievous grins.

“Haa…” Watching the two of them getting all fired up, Fang Zhengwen could only sigh heavily in worry.

In the following weeks, a series of ‘mysterious incidents’ began to occur around Gao Shide.

Someone had slipped baby powder into a hair dryer, so when it was turned on, white dust flew everywhere.

After a basketball game, a bottle of soda given to him by a junior girl had apparently been shaken violently—so the moment he opened it, it exploded.

Some people are born unlucky—they walk into trees or crash their cars into utility poles.

Gao Shide was the opposite. Whether it was a powder-blasting hair dryer or a carbonated bomb, he always came out unscathed.

It was everyone around him who ended up as the victims.

“Damn it! It’s a bomb!” shouted Shi Zheyu, a fellow senior in the Information Engineering Department, staring at the exploding soda bottle in disbelief.

When Gao Shide peeled off the label, he found the word “IDIOT” scrawled on the bottle in black marker.

Looking up, he spotted Zhou Shuyi on the second-floor bleachers, chatting with someone.

“Are you possessed by Tokyo’s walking Reaper—Conan or something? How else do you explain all these bizarre accidents wherever you go?”

The innocent victim muttered this while wiping his soaked shirt with a towel.

“Is that so…” Gao Shide murmured absently.

“Maybe you pissed someone off, and now they’re trying to get back at you?”

“Yeah… maybe…”

His mind clearly elsewhere, Gao Shide’s eyes were fixed on Zhou Shuyi upstairs.

Of course, he knew perfectly well who was behind these ‘mysterious incidents’.

But he had no intention of exposing the culprit.

As long as he could stay within that person’s gaze—even if it meant being their target—it was fine by him.

Gao Shide smiled gently toward the second floor.

The culprit immediately averted his eyes and pretended to talk to Liu Bingwei beside him.

But the moment Gao Shide saw Liu Bingwei’s hand rest on Zhou Shuyi’s shoulder— that smile vanished instantly.

~Business Administration Building

In a classroom of the Finance Department, Zhou Shuyi sat in the last row, legs crossed on the desk. As he absently fiddled with the pendant hanging from his necklace, he muttered to himself: “Tch, that guy’s way too lucky.”

He had planned to record Gao Shide’s embarrassing moment with his phone—but instead, it was everyone else nearby who had ended up as the victims. Not part of the plan.

Fang Zhengwen, holding a piece of chalk, turned and asked, “Hey, anyone got other ideas?”

On the blackboard, the words ‘A Hundred Ways to Punish Gao Shide’ were scrawled in large letters.

Below it was a remarkable list of creative methods: cockroach dumplings, aphrodisiac fried rice, coffee in his shoes, chalk dust in his water bottle, wax depilation, a straw doll with five-inch nails, wasabi cream puffs, meat sauce sundaes, chili powder in his swimsuit—and of course, the recently failed cola bomb. Each plan was detailed with an impressive variety.

“Or maybe…”

Setting down the chalk, Liu Bingwei lowered his voice and suggested to the ringleader, “We could hire some thugs.”

“For a Law Department student, that’s a pretty stupid idea,” Zhou Shuyi immediately shot down the suggestion.

Fang Zhengwen tossed his chalk aside and walked to the back of the room, speaking gently. “Why don’t you just give it up? You’re graduating soon anyway.”

Zhou Shuyi lifted his chin stubbornly, refusing to back down. “Exactly—that’s why I should leave behind a memorable final act.”

*Translator’s Note: Yeah the memorable final act is you being his lover hahaha. -K

*GLOSSARY:

-Tokyo’s walking Reaper—Conan: This phrase combines the ‘walking reaper’ or death-attracting meme/trope of Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa (who famously brings murder wherever he goes) with real-world Tokyo settings, walking rally events, or specific landmarks featured in Detective Conan.
