DSMC Chapter 152.1

Lost Family Member (Part 1)

[Want to be Human] livestream channel:

“Hahahahaha, this game is freaking ridiculous! They actually threw in three identical NPCs! They have to be Qu-laoshi’s personalities!”

“I think so too. Kitty Baby doesn’t even dare blink. He’s definitely cursing the game and Qu-laoshi in his head~ What kind of trash game is this? Since when can they just copy and paste NPCs?”

“Hilarious!! What kind of development is this? Go, kitty, go! You have to find Qu-laoshi!”

“The main storyline really did get harder after the instance upgrade. Before, there were only two Qu-laoshis, and they were split across two different instances with the same setting but different plots. But now this instance suddenly gives us triplets. If these three NPCs really are new personalities of Qu-laoshi, this is going to be insanely exciting. Three people, three different personalities. Kitty Baby will have to hover between the three brothers and choose.”

“I think we should look on the bright side. Doesn’t Mimi have three more pooper scoopers now? It’s only been two days in this instance, and he’s already gained five pooper scoopers. Isn’t that something to be happy about? Over a week, he could practically switch to a different one every day.”

“ALDSLJALKDJLSJLAKJKJK I can’t stop laughing, holy shit! Hahahahaha!”

Who could have imagined that Teacher Qu’s world would be this complicated, producing triplets all at once?

Yan Jiyun would rather believe this was nothing more than a smokescreen to conceal Teacher Qu’s true primary personality. The real personality definitely wasn’t among them!

They’re definitely not Teacher Qu… right? Right?

The three triplet brothers standing together made for quite the visual spectacle, but Yan Jiyun had no time to appreciate their delicate, adorable looks. One Class Monitor was cute. Two Class Monitors were still acceptable. Three little Class Monitors were enough to give him a heart attack.

Of course, distinguishing who was who was still easy for him. Each of them had a unique personality.

Yan Jiyun spotted Gu Wenzhu and Qiu Xi, but not Qi Feng or Lan Mo. He wasn’t sure whether the two had split up to investigate elsewhere.

The players had probably all noticed the triplets by now, and everyone’s attention would likely shift to them soon.

Yan Jiyun, however, had no intention of following the crowd. He had something more important to do.

He was hungry. Nothing was more important than eating!

His original plan had been pretty good; wait until Qi Feng finished class and then go find him. But now he’d turned back into a cat, and Qi Feng had disappeared to who knew where.

Besides, Yan Jiyun couldn’t exactly dash out from right in front of the triplets.

It just so happened to be recess. Who knew whether he’d run into another bunch of bratty kids like in the first instance, where catching cats was treated as a game?

At that moment, the three brothers were talking.

Class Monitor No. 1, Yan Weilan, was from Class 3. Class Monitor No. 2, Yan Weicheng, was from Class 5. As for Class Monitor No. 3, Yan Jiyun still didn’t know which class he belonged to.

Class Monitor No. 1 asked, “You attended class properly today, right?”

Class Monitor No. 3 snorted. “Didi, stop asking me that like Dad does. You make it sound like I’m out causing trouble every single day.”

Class Monitor No. 2 said, “Yan Weiqing, why are you so hostile? Didi didn’t offend you. Everyone attended class properly today.”

Yan Weiqing warned his younger brother, Yan Weilan1By the way, the triplets are named after color. Yan (not the same as Yan Jiyun’s Yan) = closely sealed / stern / strict / rigorous; Wei = Oriental/Japanese wormwood / luxuriant / resplendent / impressive; 严蔚蓝 Lan = blue;  严蔚橙 Cheng = orange; 严蔚青 Qing = blue-green., “When we go home this weekend, you’re not allowed to tattle.”

Class Monitor No. 1 looked a little aggrieved. “I only tell the truth. I’ve never tattled. I just report our situation at school to Dad right in front of both of you.”

‘That really is Class Monitor’s style,’ Yan Jiyun thought. ‘So adorable!! Telling on both brothers right in front of their parents. I’m dying, ahh.’

But why had the three brothers suddenly gathered here? Did they have something important to discuss?

Class Monitor No. 1, Yan Weilan, was the youngest of the triplets. Both No. 2 and No. 3 called him “didi”.

Class Monitor No. 3 said, “I’ve spent all my allowance. Which one of you still has money? Lend me some first. I’ll pay you back next week when we go home.”

Class Monitor No. 2 replied, “No money. You spend money like water. You’ve already used up Didi’s allowance every single time.”

Class Monitor No. 1 didn’t seem very good at lying, but he clearly didn’t want to keep enabling Yan Weiqing’s reckless spending either, so he simply pursed his lips and stayed silent.

Class Monitor No. 3 and No. 2 clearly didn’t get along very well. Class Monitor No. 3 said, “I was asking Didi, not you.”

Class Monitor No. 2 rolled his eyes. “Why don’t you worry about Didi’s safety first? The class monitors from your class and ours have both gotten into trouble. I’m afraid he’ll be targeted by the bad guys too. I still have cleaning duty later, so take Didi to the cafeteria properly and make sure he eats. Got it?”

‘So that’s why,’ Yan Jiyun realized. Class Monitor No. 2 had stepped up as the responsible older brother. The two older brothers were taking turns accompanying their younger brother so he wouldn’t be left alone.

It seemed the youngest brother was clever, and so were his two brothers. They had actually deduced why the class monitors from several classes had fallen ill. Aside from the Class 6 class monitor, who might have had a different illness, the class monitors from the other three classes had most likely all been poisoned.

In that case, the three Class Monitor’s safety had become extremely important.

With the slightly fierce Class Monitor No. 3 accompanying him, Class Monitor No. 1 was safe for the time being.

After repeatedly reminding Yan Weiqing to keep a close eye on their younger brother, Yan Weicheng left.

The moment Yan Weicheng was gone, Yan Weiqing. 3 immediately reached into his younger brother’s pocket. “Hurry up and give me some money. I want to buy an ice cream.”

Yan Weilan put on a stern face. “No. You can’t eat one every day. Your face is already swollen from eating too much.”

Yan Weiqing hurriedly felt his cheeks. “No way! My face is swollen? Are you saying I’ve gotten fat?”

Yan Weilan nodded. “If you get fat, girls won’t like you anymore.”

Yan Weiqing’s attention was successfully diverted.

Yan Jiyun: “…”

His Class Monitor really knew how to prescribe the right remedy. He had successfully distracted his older brother and solved the allowance issue at the same time.

Class Monitor No. 1 and No. 3 headed straight for the cafeteria.

Only after they were gone did Yan Jiyun slowly emerge from beneath the osmanthus tree. After thinking for a moment, he quietly slipped into an empty corner and used his Human Form Time Card.

Being hungry was even more terrifying than being sleep-deprived.

Gu Wenzhu and Qiu Xi also turned toward the cafeteria, presumably following Class Monitor No. 1.

Yan Jiyun caught up with them shortly afterward.

Gu Wenzhu asked him, “Where did you pop out from?”

Yan Jiyun deliberately looked around instead of answering. “Where are Qi Feng and Lan Mo?”

Gu Wenzhu remained perfectly calm. “They said they were going to look for the cat.”

Back when they had caused chaos in the music building, Gu Wenzhu had already learned that Qi Feng had a cat. There was no need to keep that secret anymore.

Yan Jiyun guessed Qi Feng assumed the cat was also a player and would have entered this place together with everyone else. After all, every player who had been inside the music building had ended up here. There was no reason the cat — who had charged into the building first — wouldn’t have entered too.

And that was indeed true, as he had arrived here as well. He just hadn’t had the chance to turn back into a cat.

He looked ahead. “Should we follow them?”

Qiu Xi nodded repeatedly. “Mhm, mhm, mhm.”

The three of them followed Class Monitor No. 1 and No. 3 into the cafeteria.

Everyone was lining up in an orderly fashion. But Yan Jiyun and the other two deliberately queued up behind the little Class Monitors.

Yan Jiyun even greeted him. “Class Monitor.”

Class Monitor Yan Weilan turned around, his eyes bright. “Yan Jiyun? How could you tell which one was me and which one was my Erge?2oldest to youngest: Yan Weicheng (no. 2) > Yan Weiqing (no. 3) > Yan Weilan (no. 1)

Yan Jiyun smiled mysteriously. “I have my own secret.” There was no helping it; his sense of smell was naturally excellent. Even though they were triplets, each of them carried a slightly different scent. Besides, Yan Weilan had grabbed his clothes before, leaving behind a trace of his smell.

Class Monitor No. 1 was visibly pleased. Even when it was his turn to get his food, he kept looking back at Yan Jiyun.

Seeing the confusion written all over his face, Yan Jiyun asked, “Why do you keep looking at me?”

Class Monitor shook his head. “When my brothers and I stand together, very few people can recognize me right away.”

Yan Jiyun patted his shoulder. “It’s your turn. Go get your food. Hurry, hurry.” He was starving. Qi Feng had managed to swipe canned food from Teacher Qu, yet he hadn’t gotten to eat a single can. The regret still made his heart ache.

Class Monitor obediently stepped forward to get his meal. “Okay.”

Yan Jiyun was always the most enthusiastic when it came to eating. The moment mealtime arrived, he would head straight to the cafeteria.

Maybe it was because of the background setting, but most instances solved the players’ food and lodging problems. Yan Jiyun was fairly satisfied with that, at least the players wouldn’t starve to death.

Although Yan Jiyun and the other two were players, they still had to blend into the NPCs’ social circle.

So they sat at the same table as Yan Weilan and Yan Weiqing.

Class Monitor No. 1 ate quietly.

Class Monitor No. 3, however, was picky. He pushed aside all the vegetables he didn’t like, ate only the meat, and even stole all the meat from Class Monitor No. 1’s tray, replacing it with vegetables.

The cafeteria served fixed portions, so every student’s meal was exactly the same. Yan Jiyun only ate chicken and fish. He didn’t eat pork.

Seeing Yan Weilan eating only vegetables, he asked, “Do you eat pork? I’m Hui, so I don’t eat pork3Hui is 回族 (huí zú), an islamic ethnic group in China. I don’t think YJY is Hui though; because he ate pork before. He just doesn’t eat fatty meat because he can’t digest it well. In the previous chapters he ate oily barbeque meat (in China, if the meat is called with just 肉, it implies that it’s pork, as this is the most common meat eaten across China) with gusto, only to end up with indigestion.”

Yan Weilan nodded. “I can.”

Yan Jiyun used his unused chopsticks to transfer the pork to him. We are never told that they are actually class monitors. really seemed to bully his younger brother all the time, even snatching away his meat. Class Monitor No. 1 looked quite smart, though. How could he let himself be bullied?

Just moments ago, he had effortlessly diverted his older brother’s attention, could he be doing it on purpose?

While eating, Yan Jiyun quietly observed every move Yan Weilan made.

Gu Wenzhu wasn’t familiar with Yan Weilan, so instead he started chatting up Yan Weiqing.

After only a few exchanges, Class Monitor No. 3 revealed why the three brothers weren’t in the same class.

Despite his young age, Class Monitor No. 3 already carried a bit of a delinquent air. “Why aren’t we in the same class? Obviously because the teachers couldn’t tell us apart. We three brothers were in the same class during first grade. But later… the teachers got sick of us and split us up.”

Class Monitor No. 1 patiently corrected him. “That’s not what happened. You didn’t want to take the exam, so you made me switch seats with you and take it for you. The teacher didn’t notice anything wrong, but Mom and Dad figured it out when they saw the final exam scores. Starting from second grade, the three of us were never placed in the same class again.”

Yan Jiyun sighed. “So that’s one advantage of being triplets. You don’t even have to take your own exams.”

Class Monitor No. 3 immediately found a kindred spirit. “Exactly! If my parents hadn’t noticed something was off with my grades, I wouldn’t have ended up separated from my little brother.”

He sounded genuinely regretful that nobody could take exams for him anymore.

Yan Jiyun sympathized even more with the well-behaved Yan Weilan. This older brother really was exploiting his younger brother to the fullest. Still, he became even more convinced that Yan Weilan had done it on purpose. Judging from how determined he had been to drag Yan Jiyun back to class earlier, it was obvious the exam substitution hadn’t been some simple incident. The final result had been exactly what the little class monitor wanted: he had successfully achieved his goal of separating himself from his two older brothers.

But that had happened back in first grade. Yan Weilan had only been six or seven years old then. Could a child that young really have been so calculating? Or was Yan Jiyun simply reading too much into it?
