“Gao—”

“Let’s talk after this. I need to finish treating you first.”

Cutting him off, Gao Shide guided Zhou Shuyi back into the chair, lifted his injured foot onto his knee, and gently removed his shoe and sock. He disinfected the swollen ankle with alcohol, unwrapped the bandage, and began wrapping it carefully around the injury.

Zhou Shuyi’s chest began to pound as he watched the practiced movements of Gao Shide’s hands. To break the silence, he blurted out, “I only heard it by accident, you know…”

The morning after — he hadn’t been pretending to sleep. He’d just been lying there like usual. He never expected to overhear that kind of confession… one he didn’t know how to respond to.

Gao Shide stopped his hands and met Zhou Shuyi’s eyes — eyes he hadn’t seen in days.

“So that’s why you’ve been avoiding me? You said you wanted to get a girlfriend?”

“How did you—?”

“You didn’t reply to my messages. I happened to see Jiang Yuxin and Fang Zhengwen at the library, so I asked them where you were. They told me.”

Zhou Shuyi bit his lip, hesitating for a few seconds before speaking the answer he’d agonized over for days.

“Gao Shide… I don’t plan on falling in love with another man.”

“I know.”

His voice was quiet — calmer than ever. He’d always known the truth. He knew exactly what kind of girls Zhou Shuyi liked. He’d also known that his feelings would never be returned, and that being ‘friends’ was the closest he could ever get.

When he finished wrapping the bandage, Gao Shide gently put Zhou Shuyi’s sock and shoe back on, tying the laces carefully. Then he looked up, eyes steady.

“Don’t start dating someone just to avoid me. That wouldn’t be fair to her.”

“I’d never do something that cruel.”

Zhou Shuyi was sincere — in love, he was always straightforward. It was why he’d spent years secretly in love with Jiang Yuxin.

“Good.”

Gao Shide exhaled softly, forcing a small smile.

“The best way to heal a broken heart is to fall in love again. I hope you find a new start.”

“Gao—”

The pain in Gao Shide’s eyes made Zhou Shuyi’s chest twist. He tried to speak, but Gao Shide stopped him — gently taking his arm and helping him up.

“Try standing. It shouldn’t hurt anymore.”

Zhou Shuyi obeyed without thinking, testing his right foot and frowning thoughtfully.

“It’s a lot better. Thanks.”

Seeing that he could walk on his own, Gao Shide walked over to the table, picked up his backpack, and turned his back to him.

“Zhou Shuyi… my feelings are my own. Don’t worry about them. I’ve deleted the video I used to blackmail you. Thanks for putting up with me until now. Starting tomorrow, you’re free from being my errand boy. And…”

After a pause, he added softly: “Forget what I said the other day.”

He opened the stainless-steel door Pei Shouyi had closed and left the infirmary.

Zhou Shuyi stood frozen, staring at the door long after it shut — unable to move, unable to speak.

~Gao Shide’s Home

Clap!

Gao Shide’s mother put down her spoon and clapped her hands sharply at her son, who sat staring blankly at the dining table.

“Mom?” Startled, Gao Shide looked up.

“Oh, so you can move! I thought you’d turned into ‘The Thinker’. What’s wrong? Something bothering you?”

“…Not really.”

“‘Not really?’” Raising her voice slightly, she echoed his words, narrowing her eyes at him from across the table.

“I gave birth to you, you know. Of course I can tell when something’s on your mind. Don’t try to dodge it—just say it. What’s going on?”

Putting down his chopsticks, Gao Shide met his mother’s gaze and replied quietly: “I was just thinking… about how I should give up on someone I like.”

“Did you at least try to chase after them?”

“…”

He sighed and shook his head.

“So you’re giving up without doing anything? I could’ve sworn I gave birth to a brave kid. Since when did you turn into such a coward? You’d better start looking for that ‘missing courage’ right now.” Leaning over, she started pretending to search under the table.

“Mom…” His voice rose in mild protest. She just laughed, speaking warmly to encourage him.

“When you like someone, you have to be brave and go after them. If you don’t even try, you’ll regret it later.”

“But what if… I already know it’s hopeless?”

He set down his rice bowl, his tone heavy.

“Would you still tell me to try?”

Seeing her usually confident son so unsure of himself, she put down her own utensils, stood up, pulled out the chair beside him, and sat down at his right.

“What’s gotten into my handsome son? Where’s your confidence? You’re not that person—how could you possibly know how they’ll respond? Even if it doesn’t work out, expressing how you feel and how they take it are two different things. And besides, life is long. Who’s ever loved someone without getting hurt along the way?”

She brushed her hand affectionately through his hair and winked.

“Scars make a man more attractive, you know. And when someone realizes there’s a person who loves them that deeply, maybe—just maybe—they’ll change their mind. Don’t you think so?”

Her words finally brought a smile to Gao Shide’s face. The tightness in his chest eased a little. His mother’s love had always been a safety net—something soft and unshakable that caught him whenever he fell.

He looked at her quietly, then asked, “Mom… can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Why did you accept Uncle’s proposal? Aren’t you afraid he’ll turn out like Dad?”

“…”

She hadn’t expected that question. Looking at her son, she remembered.

When she’d faced her husband’s infidelity and their divorce, she’d been crushed by guilt—blaming herself for not being enough as a wife. She’d always felt sorry that her decision had taken away the possibility of a complete family for her son.

But one day, when he was only in fifth grade, her son had held her as she cried and told her, with all the seriousness in his little voice:

“Mom, don’t cry anymore. Stop blaming yourself. You’re amazing. You’re my favorite person in the world. If Dad’s the one who abandoned us, then we don’t need him either. Nothing’s changed. It’s just the two of us now instead of three. We’ll be fine.”

Those words had freed her—from guilt, from shame, from everything.

Since then, she’d devoted herself entirely to her son and her work.

As CEO of Huajing Technologies, she had managed the company well, and business had grown steadily every year.

Her dearest son had never given her reason to worry—neither in studies nor in character. Watching him grow into a confident, self-reliant young man was like slowly putting back together a jigsaw puzzle that had once been scattered in pieces across the floor.

Only two pieces were missing now—

Her own happiness, and Shide’s.
