EDEH Chapter 91

Sharing Breath

[007 Diary Twenty-Seven]

[Collapse Year 326, March 6th, a day worthy of historical record.]—

After learning the cruel truth of the Dawn Plan, humanity still set aside hatred and resentment in the face of disaster, burying past grievances, uniting against the common enemy, and finally achieving victory in the difficult battle against the mutant antlions.

Though it was a path to victory paved with flesh and blood, it was still inspiring.

Humans always surprise us in unexpected ways. No matter how painful the truth, for those born in this era, sacrifice is a spirit etched into their bones.

Perhaps from birth they dimly understood that they were all sacrificial offerings to history, using their lives as tribute to the dawn.

I saw the images transmitted from the main city. Under the ruined debris, the devoted didn’t even leave behind corpses—only desolate blood and occasional torn fabric fragments fluttering in the wind.

They were born for ideals, and died for ideals.

…

Subject 002’s manor was exposed to the public, and the stigma once imposed upon him was finally washed away.

Perhaps compared to Huo Feng, Subject 002 is the true pathfinder.

In Subject 002, I sense some attributes similar to the Doctor. They both dedicated everything to humanity, completely laying bare all personal emotions. The little evil dragon is their common exception.]

Main City.

Huo Yanji’s troops returned at a crucial moment, providing maximum support. After days of blood and gunpowder fighting, they finally welcomed the dawn of victory on this morning.

“We won!!!!”

As light appeared on the distant horizon, the surviving soldiers and civilians were overwhelmed with excitement, their days of battle fatigue swept away.

Only after killing the last antlion could they finally retract their deviant limbs, throw down their weapons, raise their hands high, and cheer endlessly.

Some fell to their knees, laughing wildly with bloodshot eyes full of tears. Others embraced comrades they’d fought alongside for days without even knowing their names, sharing the exhilarating joy in their hearts.

Perhaps only those who experienced it firsthand could understand the hardship.

War against contaminated creatures was unlike any war in history—their enemies weren’t human, but mindless monsters.

The monsters wouldn’t negotiate, wouldn’t suffer from bleeding, wouldn’t retreat due to casualties. Victory could only come when they were all dead.

“We won!!”

“We held it, we really held it!!!”

Excited tears streamed down, washing away the grime from weathered skin.

Behind them was the lighthouse glowing with warm light, the main structure of the First Safe Zone. Before them lay the ruins and rubble—a battlefield soaked with their comrades’ blood and flesh.

How could they not cry.

From the broadcast came the old general’s solemn and steady voice.

“After these days of bloody battle, we achieved victory against the underground contaminants at the fastest speed in history!! We defended the lighthouse, defended the main city’s nine major districts, preserved the agricultural foundation of the Forestry Farm—and protected General Huo’s manor!

“This achievement belongs to every one of us. Without your determination and sacrifice, humanity might have truly fallen into the abyss!”

“Everyone… you’ve worked hard.”

At this moment, no flowery rhetoric could describe the difficulty of this battle.

They achieved victory at an unprecedented speed in history, not because they were so powerful, but because they had no choice. The later they won, the more territory they would lose, so they couldn’t delay—couldn’t slack off for even a moment.

Even if it meant no sleep, no food or drink, they had to achieve victory at the fastest speed.

…

In the cave.

Unaware of the news of victory, Huo Yanji leaned against the rock with Sang Jue sleeping soundly in his arms after so long apart. Despite the poor conditions, Sang Jue trusted him completely, pressing against his broad chest and sleeping sweetly.

Huo Yanji woke several times throughout the night, each time placing a kiss on Sang Jue’s hair and quietly watching the flickering campfire.

The warm red firelight illuminated the peace in his eyes, as if there was no moment more tranquil than this.

For the first time in his thirty-plus years, Huo Yanji set aside the responsibilities on his shoulders, abandoned his ideals, stopped thinking about humanity’s survival, and lived two days as “savages” with Sang Jue.

During the day, they would hunt together, searching for edible food and fresh water.

Sang Jue was curious about everything, chattering like a walking encyclopedia of questions, and Huo Yanji would patiently answer each one, using calm tones to introduce the characteristics of every plant, the former appearance of every mutant monster, their weaknesses and habits.

At night, it would be like this moment—quietly holding his “selfish desire,” as if this small cave in the mountains plus the person in his arms was the entire world.

Sang Jue mumbled: “Wife…”

‘Wife’ glanced down at him and pinched his bottom.

Sang Jue jolted awake, burrowing deeper into his embrace: “That hurt.”

Huo Yanji said: “That’s the only place with any meat.”

Sang Jue wasn’t angry: “If you like more meat, you need to feed me more gems.”

Huo Yanji curved his lips: “Gems for you should be about absorbing their substances, not carbohydrates. From a human physiological perspective, they wouldn’t make you gain weight.”

Sang Jue nuzzled against Huo Yanji’s neck: “Then feed me more human delicacies.”

Huo Yanji had been bringing up the little evil dragon’s home planet these past two days: “What do you like to eat at home?”

“Hmm…” Sang Jue thought, “Many things. I like chips, shrimp sticks, pretty little cakes… and I like candy, but the doctor wouldn’t let me eat much, saying it would cause cavities and make me a little fatty.”

Sang Jue wasn’t human, and with such strong healing abilities, whether he could get cavities was unknown, but this doctor seemed to be raising him exactly like a human child.

Huo Yanji listened quietly, and after Sang Jue finished, he said: “Our planet had these foods a hundred years ago too.”

Without thinking, Sang Jue said: “But your planet doesn’t have Dr. Anya, so I still have to leave.”

Huo Yanji said nothing more, pinched Sang Jue’s nape twice, then lifted him by the armpits: “One more day. Tomorrow we’ll start heading toward the solar base station and pretend to encounter them by chance.”

“Okay.”

Sang Jue didn’t have high requirements for living conditions.

Though he was a child raised in a greenhouse—previously cherished by the doctor, now indulged by Huo Yanji—his only requirement was having his beloved human by his side.

So whether living in the wild or on a comfortable big bed in the city, as long as Huo Yanji was there, it made little difference to Sang Jue.

Sang Jue still wore only a white shirt. Being military undershirt style, it wasn’t too long, barely covering his bottom. His legs were straight and white, the half-covered area in between especially provocative.

After sleeping all night, two shirt buttons had come undone.

Huo Yanji straightened his clothes and buttoned them up. Sang Jue was oblivious, saying carelessly: “You’re too big, so your clothes are also big.”

“…” Meeting Sang Jue’s innocent gaze, Huo Yanji said meaningfully: “You’re too small.”

Sang Jue protested: “I’m only eighteen, I can still grow.”

Huo Yanji let out a soft laugh: “Didn’t you say you slept in the aircraft for many years? If you didn’t grow in all those years, how do you expect to grow now?”

Sang Jue: “…”

Bad Ji Ji, always bullying him.

Huo Yanji said flatly: “Don’t look at me with that expression to seduce me.”

“…?” It was clearly an angry expression.

Huo Yanji said leisurely: “If I say it’s seduction, then it’s seduction.”

Sang Jue: “…You’re unreasonable.”

Though his wife was unreasonable, Sang Jue decided to indulge him. The wife he chose, he had to take responsibility for, especially since his wife’s cooking was delicious.

The morning before yesterday, Huo Yanji made a simple trap and caught a wild rabbit taller than a human waist, but without seasoning in the wild, it was too bland. After two bites, Sang Jue didn’t want to eat anymore.

Sang Jue wasn’t being difficult—he just felt he wouldn’t starve to death anyway, so it wasn’t a big problem.

“Spoiled.”

Despite saying this, Huo Yanji still spent half an hour searching the surrounding forest for salt wood fruit, grinding it bit by bit into rough particles and sprinkling it on the roasting rabbit meat, creating a unique flavor.

Sang Jue ate with great relish.

He tore off a piece of rabbit leg and fed it to Huo Yanji’s lips: “You eat too little.”

Huo Yanji ate the tender yet chewy rabbit meat and said flatly: “Could it be that you eat too much?”

Sang Jue: “…”

Bullying him again.

The little evil dragon sulked: “If I don’t eat, you say only my butt has meat. You’re unreasonable.”

“Right.” Huo Yanji curved his lips: “I’m just unreasonable.”

Sang Jue: “…”

He suddenly understood what humans used to say—partners could be completely different before and after getting together. So bad.

The little evil dragon said whatever he thought.

Huo Yanji wiped the coarse salt from the corner of his mouth: “I can be even worse, so don’t seduce me.”

Sang Jue was completely puzzled, not understanding how eating could somehow be seductive again.

Human males were really strange.

Clearly they were the ones feeling lustful, yet they blamed others for it.

Sang Jue might never understand that with such an outfit, no matter what he did or said, whether angry or happy, it was no different from seduction.

“Can I let my tail out?”

These past two days, Huo Yanji had restricted Sang Jue’s freedom to show his tail.

The tail’s position was very special—once it came out, it would lift the shirt hem, and the shirt would completely fail to cover anything.

Huo Yanji’s eyes darkened: “Come here.”

He extended his hand, and Sang Jue obediently walked over, bumping into his embrace, tugging at the shirt hem: “I don’t have underwear. How will I walk tomorrow?”

Though animals didn’t need clothes, they had scales and fur, so they couldn’t be considered completely naked.

But humans felt shame from not wearing clothes. Even someone as innocent as Sang Jue understood the need to dress properly in public, at least covering private areas.

Huo Yanji said casually: “You can’t fit into mine.”

“…”

Sang Jue huffed quietly and bit Huo Yanji’s chest muscle.

Bad wife.

Huo Yanji’s eyes narrowed: “Sang Jue.”

Sang Jue refused to let go, mumbling: “So you’ll let others see me naked?”

Huo Yanji gripped Sang Jue’s nape, trying to pull him away: “The underground city gets many supplies from these mountains. Human corpses are common—we’ll find wearable clothes.”

Sang Jue’s teeth loosened, and he licked twice: “Salty.”

“You just ate rabbit meat.”

Sang Jue actually wanted to nibble the area next to the tooth marks too.

He secretly glanced at Huo Yanji, looking for a chance to bite, but noticed Huo Yanji’s expression suddenly change as he touched the water-damaged mini communicator by his ear that was making crackling sounds.

Broken voices came through the earpiece: “…General.”

“Wolf Peak… battle traces…”

Sang Jue keenly looked toward the cave entrance, looking up: “Humans are coming, many of them.”

Huo Yanji made a quick decision, kicking out the campfire and directly grabbing Sang Jue’s waist to jump into the pool: “Hold your breath!”

“Glub glub…”

The still pool water bubbled, creating ripples. Soon, footsteps of over ten people came from the cave entrance: “Madam, these battle traces should be from the past two days. Should we report…”

“Report what? Is General Huo at Wolf Peak?” Evelyn smiled softly. “Wolf Peak is over thirty kilometers from the fire zone. How could General Huo possibly be here?”

“But aren’t we out here to rescue General Huo… If you think so, why did you come to Wolf Peak?”

The cave was dark, the environment inside unclear, with only the not-quite-extinguished embers on the ground particularly glaring.

Just before they turned on their flashlights, the ripples in the pool water barely disappeared.

Evelyn didn’t answer the soldier’s question, but crouched slightly to pick up a rabbit leg bone from the ground.

“Still warm…”

“Madam!” the soldier called anxiously.

“Since you think General Huo might appear at Wolf Peak, go search the surroundings.” Evelyn said gently. “Looking at the campfire’s state, they shouldn’t have left long ago. Maybe we can find them.”

“Yes!”

The soldiers dispersed, conducting search and rescue with the cave as center, leaving only Evelyn in the cave, sitting by the pool washing her slender fingers.

Sang Jue in the water could see the woman’s slender silhouette on the surface. After washing her fingers, she began unhurriedly cleaning the corners of her clothes.

Sang Jue was pressed against the underwater stone wall, his mouth and nose covered by broad palms, his most sensitive areas pinned by a knee.

He forcibly suppressed his instinct to struggle, trusting the human before him.

The pool was very quiet, with no other creatures besides them, not even floating water plants.

Sang Jue’s face grew redder and redder, gradually unable to breathe, yet he still watched Huo Yanji with the same pure, trusting gaze as always.

Two minutes passed. Sang Jue felt increasingly suffocated, while Evelyn above the water still showed no intention of leaving.

His limbs gradually weakened, with a near-death sensation of both body and soul falling.

But the large hand covering his mouth and nose loosened just before he suffocated. Sang Jue instinctively wanted to breathe, but was blocked by another warm pair of lips.

Sang Jue’s eyes instantly widened. Huo Yanji’s sharp eyebrows were right before him, and then a breath was passed into his mouth, immediately relieving the suffocation.

Ji Ji’s eyelashes were also long, his eyes deep, his nose bridge a bit high—it would bump when kissing.

No wonder humans always tilted their heads when kissing.

“Glub…”

Evelyn ignored the two bubbles that surfaced, quietly gazing at the face reflected in the water, her emotions unreadable.

His chest burned painfully, his eyes stung terribly, but Sang Jue still refused to close his eyes, insisting on carefully tracing every expression on Huo Yanji’s face. He even forgot their current situation, forgot to observe whether the woman outside the pool had left.

Sang Jue unconsciously extended his tongue, exploring another scorching territory.

Huo Yanji watched him, the arm restraining his slender waist tightening more and more, his eyes growing darker.

After an unknown amount of time, water sounds came, and Huo Yanji lifted Sang Jue from the water by the waist. Fresh air flowed into his mouth and nose. Sang Jue couldn’t adapt immediately and coughed violently several times.

Yet without any pause, he was pressed down by the human, his legs forcibly spread and hooked over muscular arms. Though after Sang Jue realized the situation, he was quite cooperative.

The cave was empty.

Sang Jue once again felt suffocation as his lips and teeth were completely invaded by the human, but he didn’t resist. Even when uncomfortable, he only whimpered twice and burrowed deeper into the embrace.

He thought in a daze—so his wife hadn’t lied, he really did want to eat him.

Humans couldn’t eat humans, but they could eat dragons.
