Extra 2: Chronicles of the “Cheating” High-Pitched Cat (Part Two) (Turning into a Cat)
The little cat, annoyed after being tapped on the head, leaped onto his lap in a huff. Just then, the sound of the strings and flutes suddenly stopped. The dancers had completed their final pose, and the dance had come to an end.
“Meowww…”
The delicate, soft meow broke the silence of the moment. Everyone froze, and hundreds of pairs of eyes turned toward the emperor seated high above them, as well as the white cat in his arms that was desperately rubbing itself against his imperial robe.
“Ahem.” Li Xuanming used his broad sleeve to shield Yan Manman from view, waved for the music and dancing to continue, and reached his other hand toward the cat’s soft belly.
Everyone exchanged glances. Although none dared to speak of it, they could not help but marvel that the powerful ruler of the realm was actually so fond of cats. Each person quietly took note of this.
The little cat, thoroughly muffled beneath his sleeve, only grew more irritated. After all, this was a palace banquet. How could the emperor devote himself entirely to petting a cat? His hand would stop from time to time, and whenever he remembered, he would hurriedly stroke him a couple more times.
Yan Manman was furious but had nowhere to vent his frustration. He could only rub against him haphazardly, repeatedly hooking Li Xuanming’s hand with his claws, trying to make him pet him a few more times.
“Just bear with it a little longer.” Li Xuanming leaned closer to the trembling cat ears and whispered, “The palace banquet is almost over.”
I may not be human now, but do you hear yourself? Try enduring something like this yourself and see how you like it?!
Yan Manman’s fluffy tail was practically sticking straight up into the sky. Even the largest sleeves could no longer conceal him. Li Xuanming knew he was now completely driven by instinct, restless to the point that he could barely hold onto him. With no other choice, Li Xuanming summoned Shen Zhaoquan, gave him some instructions, and left Fengtian Hall ahead of time.
Once they left the bustling Fengtian Hall, everywhere they passed through was exceptionally quiet. But the silence clearly did not last long before it was shattered by the spoiled little cat’s cries.
The ruler who could strategize and command the affairs of the entire realm now had sweat running down his back. If the one seeking pleasure in his arms at this moment had been Yan Yihuan, he would certainly have made sure he could not get out of bed.
But what exactly was he supposed to do with Yan Manman? It was truly giving him a headache.
The little cat had already begun to resent the arms holding him tightly. He tried to break free several times, only to be pulled back into those arms each time. Just as he was angrily meowing, another cat suddenly called out from atop the palace wall, instantly silencing the restless Yan Manman.
However, this silence lasted only for an instant. Just as Li Xuanming thought he had calmed down and loosened his hold slightly, Yan Manman suddenly shot out of his arms. He called back and forth with the cat on the wall, then vanished into the shadows beside the wall in an instant.
Li Xuanming was truly caught off guard, but Shen Zhaoquan hurriedly looked up, his face filled with the expression that something terrible had happened. “Your Majesty, this servant estimates that the cat on the wall is probably a female cat.”
Li Xuanming’s ears immediately began to ring. He had considered every possibility, yet never imagined that the little creature would actually run off with a female cat!
“What are you standing around for? Go help the Emperor find his cat!” Shen Zhaoquan hurriedly ordered the little eunuchs who were still standing there in a daze.
“Bring him back, and you will be heavily rewarded.” Li Xuanming practically gritted out the words before rubbing his forehead. “Remember, you are not to hurt him in the slightest.”
There was a generous reward for finding the Emperor’s cat!
The news quickly spread among the palace servants. Regardless of rank, even those who had already gone to bed got up one after another.
For a time, the more secluded and obscure corners of the imperial palace became increasingly crowded. Meows echoed back and forth, and no one knew how many times people carrying lanterns and following the sound of cats had bumped into one another, leaving behind nothing but awkward encounters.
The imperial guards had all been dispatched to search. Li Xuanming knew there was no use in staying there, so he forcibly suppressed his anxiety and decided to return to his sleeping quarters first to change out of his heavy and elaborate court robes before going out to search personally.
Compared to the bustle outside, the sleeping quarters were much quieter. After all, no one had the courage to barge into the Emperor’s sleeping quarters. Li Xuanming strode into the hall, with the palace servants following closely behind to help him change.
Seeing the Emperor’s agitation, the hall was filled with people, yet not a single one dared to make a sound. Li Xuanming had just put on his regular robes and raised his hand for a palace servant to fasten the sash when one of the servants near the imperial bed suddenly froze.
He stared at the bed again in disbelief, then hurried over to Li Xuanming without daring to raise his voice.
“Your Majesty, the cat seems to be on the bed!”
Yan Manman was indeed on the bed. All the candles were lit up. Li Xuanming saw that the cat, originally white as snow, was now covered in dirt, with dry grass clinging to the top of his head. He suddenly felt his mind go blank. Could it be that he really had gone off to fool around?
The little cat lying on the bed saw him and immediately scrambled up, letting out soft, aggrieved cries as he burrowed straight into his arms.
Li Xuanming grabbed the little cat by the armpits and lifted him up. He noticed the cat’s eyes already held a distinctly human-like expression, his fur was a complete mess, and there even seemed to be a bald patch on his back.
“You really mated with that female cat?”
Yan Manman was startled at the question and frantically shook his head, meowing urgently. Even his round eyes seemed on the verge of tears.
Then how had he ended up looking like this? Could it be…
“You didn’t stick your tail up and then get beaten up by that female cat, did you?”
Yan Manman froze and lowered his head in humiliation.
At the time, that Dragon Li1狸花猫 (Li Hua Mao) – Dragon Li (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Li)
Differences in Dragon Li and Tabby Cat (https://www.catster.com/cat-breeds/dragon-li-vs-tabby-cat/) had crouched down and stuck her tail up at him, so he had crouched down and stuck his tail up at her too. Who could have known that the Dragon Li had such a fiery temper? Without a word, she had swiped at him with a claw. If his fur had not been so thick, it definitely would have drawn blood.
Still, that beating had snapped him back to his senses. Remembering everything that had just happened, Yan Manman felt too ashamed to face anyone. But a large hand landed on top of his head and gently ruffled his fur, followed by a low murmur filled with amusement.
“Thank goodness you’re just a little male cat who only knows how to stick his butt up.”
Yan Manman woke up alone on the imperial bed. He looked disappointedly at his still-furry paws when several cat cries suddenly reached his ears.
He sprang off the imperial bed and rushed outside, only to see a line of palace servants, each holding a cage. Inside were black cats and white cats, orange cats and calico cats, long-haired cats and short-haired cats, every kind imaginable.
Meow meow meow??
“This… seeing that Your Majesty loves cats, the envoys from various countries have all presented cats hoping to please Your Majesty.”
Meow meow meow!!
What the meow! The Emperor is mine! You damn stray cats, all of you get the hell out! There is absolutely no way the Emperor will take a liking to messy cats like you. The Emperor can only have me as his one and only little kitty!
Although he could not understand what Yan Manman was meowing about, he could tell that the little cat was cursing up a storm. Li Xuanming bent down and picked up the agitated, furiously puffed-up cat, soothing him as he chuckled softly.
“Don’t worry. Zhen won’t have any other cats. Come, meow for Zhen.”
