PCMWF Chapter 136

Watching the Kid's Variety Show

On the day of the broadcast, the local tourism board and the show’s official accounts simultaneously released the promotional video. Riding on the variety show’s popularity, the island then released several follow-up short videos for promotion. They even launched a travel route themed around “Little Feet Big Adventure” photo spots and some unique cultural tourism products. Many netizens expressed their desire to visit the island.

The living room of the villa Qin Kun and Su Siwen rented in Country D had a huge TV, right in the center of the room. The little guy was lying on Su Siwen’s shoulder. When he saw himself on the big screen, he buried his furry head into his dad’s shoulder.

Qin Kun laughed heartily and pinched his cheek. “Oh, who’s that kid on TV? He even knows how to pick up shells?”

The shells the little guy had collected earlier had been taken back to the Shen family home by Shen Minyan’s people. He stood on the sofa and ran over to Qin Kun.

“It’s Youyou. Youyou picked up a lot of shells. They’re very pretty.”

Qin Kun pretended to be disappointed and sighed. “I wonder if there’s one for me?”

Su Youli scrambled onto his lap. “Of course there is.”

Even Su Yuanzi had one. Brother Qiqi said he knew how to drill holes and could make a shell necklace for Yuanzi. The father and son played on the sofa. Youyou quickly lost interest in the variety show and asked Qin Kun to take him to play with his new ride-on car. Su Siwen didn’t know much about the entertainment industry, but he understood that fame came with controversy. Youyou was still young, and online opinions couldn’t reach him. Even though most netizens adored him, Su Siwen could still spot one or two harsh comments scrolling through the dense bullet text.

Things like: “Su Youli is so fake. What three-year-old is this clever and well-behaved? Seeing a sunset and knowing it was the treasure the director wanted them to find? The director must have told him beforehand.”

Negative comments were quickly countered. One second he’d see them, and the next they’d be gone. Su Siwen looked up at the stairs to the second floor, guessing it must be Shen Minyan protecting Youyou behind the scenes. That made sense. The Shen family had power and influence. What was there to worry about? As the first episode of the second leg aired, viewers began to notice something off.

[Guys, am I the only one who thinks Niu Niu’s dad is a bit strange?]

[+1. When the kids went on their adventure, all three parents were outside waiting, worried sick. I didn’t see Du Ze anywhere.]

[I just want to know why he didn’t bring a water bottle for Niu Niu. Isn’t he afraid she’ll get dehydrated in this heat? Good thing we have Youyou, sharing his water with Niu Niu.]

[Also, after he ate, he didn’t help clean up. Instead, he took Niu Niu to the entrance to play guitar. Seriously? He didn’t even notice the mosquito bite on her face?]

[Obviously, he just wanted to play for himself. He started his career as a singer. Maybe he thought the island vibe was good for showing off in front of the cameras.]

[This is so out of touch. Is there really a dad this free? When I take care of my niece, I’m exhausted. I don’t even have time to wash my own face. But he has time to play guitar?! (Crying laughing)]

[Niu Niu’s expression is so funny. She can’t stand it but can’t leave her dad, and still has to be supportive and say his playing sounds good.]

[Our Niu Niu is such a cheerleader, hahahahaha.]

Du Ze’s guitar-playing segment gave him more screen time in this episode. At that moment, he was sitting in his study, his personal social media page open on his laptop. After the latest episode aired, he’d gained a hundred thousand followers. He’d even trended on a hot search for taking Niu Niu to play guitar at the door. His public image had always been one of humility and courtesy, with a scholarly appearance. This “solo guitar for his daughter” moment created a great contrast effect.

He was feeling pleased with himself when he heard the sound of the door unlocking. Wang Shilan was home. The woman standing outside was tall, with a sleek short haircut gleaming with a brown luster. Her makeup was flawless, and she wore a limited-edition luxury watch on her wrist. Du Ze closed his laptop and went to greet her.

“Shilan, you must be tired.”

Wang Shilan was very busy. She had attended a wrap party for a production that evening. She stopped at the entrance and nodded. As soon as she kicked off her heels, a glass of warm water appeared before her.

Wang Shilan smiled. “Thank you.”

Du Ze had been hovering near her since she walked in, putting away her bag and coat, massaging her shoulders.

Wang Shilan felt comforted by her husband’s attentiveness. She patted his hand on her shoulder. “I watched this episode. Your guitar playing was lovely.”

Du Ze’s lips curved up, but before he could feel pleased, Wang Shilan added, “Niu Niu’s skin is a bit sensitive. Next time you take her out, remember to protect her properly.”

His hands froze on her shoulders. He was displeased by her commanding tone.

A cold glint flashed in his eyes, but he suppressed his feelings. He sat beside her, wrapped an arm around her waist, and said, “I’m sorry. I was careless. Niu Niu has been saying she wanted to hear me play guitar, and I happened to bring it this time.”

His sincere apology made Wang Shilan laugh. “I’m not blaming you. Just be more careful next time.”

But Du Ze looked genuinely remorseful, his eyes downcast, his forehead leaning on her shoulder. In Wang Shilan’s eyes, Du Ze was a gentle man. Even she had made mistakes when caring for Niu Niu. Du Ze had done well enough. They chatted in the living room for a while, then Wang Shilan went into the children’s room to check on Niu Niu. Behind her back, the man who had humbly apologized just moments ago had a sudden change in expression. He turned and slammed the bedroom door behind him.

When Wang Shilan pushed open Niu Niu’s door, the little girl was already asleep, a small nightlight on in the room. Niu Niu’s little face was nestled in the soft blanket, her small hands gripping a corner of the blanket tightly, her long hair spread out across the pillow. Wang Shilan sat on the edge of the bed, gently brushing the hair away from her daughter’s face, a loving smile on her lips.

The sleeping little one seemed to sense her mother’s presence and snuggled closer. Wang Shilan smiled, touched her daughter’s face, then bent down to lift the blanket and check on the bruise on Niu Niu’s knee. When she’d first learned Niu Niu had hurt her knee, her immediate reaction was to blame Du Ze for not taking better care of her.

Du Ze knew how to use retreat as a tactic. He immediately admitted it was his fault, saying that Niu Niu was at an age where bumps and scrapes were common, and he should have been more careful. Du Ze glanced at Niu Niu, who was held in Wang Shilan’s arms, and raised an eyebrow.

Niu Niu blinked, snuggled in her mother’s arms, and whispered an apology: “Mom, I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.”
