GUL Chapter 20: The Bitter Supporting Male Rewrites the Script Online

Quitting time arrived quickly. Qin Qing closed the thick law book and walked toward Xu Yizhi’s office. He had said he would quiz him. Had he forgotten? But when Qin Qing knocked on the door, he realized Xu Yizhi hadn’t forgotten. He was just too busy. Four or five people were crowded around his desk, each holding a stack of documents, waiting for Xu Yizhi’s review. Xu Yizhi wore a pair of frameless glasses. His gentle, amorous narrow eyes now held a sharp focus. Every unsuitable number or word on the documents was marked with a red pen and tossed back to his subordinates for revision. Only at this moment did Qin Qing finally associate him with the legendary merger and acquisition expert he had heard about. Qin Qing didn’t dare disturb him, so he quietly retreated.

But Xu Yizhi took off his glasses and said warmly, “I thought about it and decided that rote memorization isn’t really suitable for you. So I’ve prepared some practical training. You can participate in this case too.”

He handed over a document. Qin Qing immediately stepped forward, took the document, and glanced at it. Then he raised one eyebrow.

POC Acquisition Plan. So Lanyu was planning to acquire President Li’s company?

“This company looks familiar, doesn’t it?” Qin Qing deliberately showed the cover of the folder to 996, who was crouching nearby.

996 stretched its neck to look, and its whole mood soured. This President Li had later helped Qin Zishi quite a bit, constantly boosting his performance. He was a minor golden finger for Qin Zishi. Damn it. How had this golden finger been broken by Qin Qing, a bitter supporting character? 996 was so angry that it kept flicking its tail.

Qin Qing asked curiously, “What was this company’s fate in the script?”

996 gritted its teeth and wouldn’t answer. So Qin Qing understood everything.

He raised the corners of his mouth and said slowly, as if in a chant: “Fate, fate. Are you truly unchangeable? But then why are you now being so controlled by man?”

“Shut up. I don’t want to hear your poetry.” 996 roared in exasperation, its chubby body puffing up like a furball.

Qin Qing smiled and stopped provoking the little cat. All these conversations happened while he was flipping through the document, so no one noticed anything unusual. Only Xu Yizhi, who had put his glasses back on, hid the twinkling laughter in the depths of his eyes. A young man in his late twenties, sitting beside Xu Yizhi, glanced at Qin Qing with a somewhat sullen expression.

“Wouldn’t it be inappropriate to let a newcomer who hasn’t even gotten his practicing certificate participate in such a major acquisition?” The young man spoke with feigned concern, but his heart was full of jealousy.

“I’m personally mentoring him. What’s inappropriate about it?” Xu Yizhi looked directly at the young man.

The young man immediately showed a relieved smile and waved his hand. “Then it’s fine. Welcome aboard. I’m Pang Yong’an.” He stood up and shook Qin Qing’s hand. His palm was cold and clammy, like some kind of invertebrate.

The others also stood up, shook Qin Qing’s hand, and gave brief introductions. A newcomer, personally mentored by President Xu from day one. What was his background? He was incredibly lucky.

Qin Qing also knew he was lucky. He gripped the folder firmly and said with determination, “President Xu, I’ll work hard.”

“Mm. Take these materials back with you. Look up the relevant laws to compare. That way you’ll learn faster.” Xu Yizhi pointed to a large stack of documents on the corner of his desk.

Then he leaned back in his chair, a teasing tone in his voice: “This is my second gift to you. Do you like it?”

Qin Qing looked at the stack of documents, silently estimating their weight. His gentle smile cracked slightly: “I like it very much. Thank you, President Xu.” The last few words were squeezed through gritted teeth.

Xu Yizhi chuckled. “Alright. You can clock out. Starting tomorrow, working late into the night will be routine. Be prepared.”

“I understand. If I were afraid of overtime, I wouldn’t have chosen to work under you. Perhaps you don’t know,” Qin Qing paused, then said, “My cat at home is called 996.”

996: “What the hell did you just say?”

Xu Yizhi was surprised, then asked, “Is that because you love working so much?”

Without a second’s hesitation, Qin Qing said, “Yes.”

996: “Damn it. My name is 996 because my serial number is 996. Qin Qing, you actually used my name to show loyalty to your boss. You’re shameless.”

Qin Qing looked steadily at Xu Yizhi, his eyes full of passion for work and fearless determination. Xu Yizhi looked back at him for a few seconds. Though his expression was calm, the tips of his ears were slightly red. So even when lying, he still knew how to be embarrassed. Xu Yizhi turned his head away, covered his eyes, and laughed softly. He couldn’t help it. This little flower was too interesting.

“Alright, I believe you’ll achieve results. It’s getting late. You can go.” Xu Yizhi suppressed his laughter and looked at his watch, urging him to leave.

Qin Qing nodded, then stepped forward to pick up the stack of folders. He exerted force with both arms but couldn’t lift them. In that moment of embarrassment, he immediately looked at Xu Yizhi, his ears burning red. Having suffered hardship too early, his body was weak and afflicted with illness.

“Pfft…” Pang Yong’an let out a snicker.

996 held its belly: “Meow meow meow, Qin Qing, you’re so embarrassing.”

Xu Yizhi sighed softly, then lifted the stack of documents and said gently, “I’ll walk you down.”

Qin Qing rubbed his slightly red ears and silently followed his boss out of the office. Outside the company building, a silver-gray sports car with a pink bow was parked prominently at the entrance. Passersby looked at it with envy, wondering who the gift was for. Ji Lan stood by the roadside with the car key, her heart racing with anxiety. She had given Qin Zishi countless gifts before, but she had never felt this nervous, her heart pounding like this. She was afraid Qin Qing wouldn’t like it. Even worse, she was afraid he would refuse. Even if he just accepted the gift with a lukewarm expression, she would feel miserable. She wanted that child to be happy. The feeling was overwhelming.

“That looks like your mother.” Xu Yizhi smiled as they walked out of the elevator.

Qin Qing looked ahead and froze.

Ji Lan also saw Qin Qing. Her face went pale, then flushed red. She walked up quickly and forced the car key into Qin Qing’s hand, her voice trembling: “Son, this is a gift from Mom. Do you like it?”

She wouldn’t give him two million yuan, but she would give him expensive gifts instead. That way, he wouldn’t be drained dry by that woman, Shen Mingshu. Qin Qing looked down at the car key in his palm, then at Ji Lan. This woman looked up at him, her eyes full of eager anticipation and nervousness. She didn’t know how her son would react. If she was met with resistance or indifference, her heart would surely break. Qin Qing knew too well how painful a broken heart could be. He also knew how sleepless nights felt when you weren’t valued. He slowly closed his fingers around the car key and pulled Ji Lan into a hug. He kissed her pale, nervous cheek with a smile.

“I love it. Thank you, Mom. This is the best gift I’ve ever received.” He had never smiled so brightly before.

His already handsome face shone in the spring sunlight. Tears of emotion rose in his eyes, reddening their edges. Anyone could see how overwhelmingly happy he was. After a gentle kiss on his mother’s cheek, he kissed her forehead several more times, then hugged her tightly. Passersby stopped to watch. Qin Qing’s joyful face was intoxicating. Not only was his mother willing to spend so much to please him, but even strangers would also want to give everything for a fleeting smile from him. Ji Lan was held tightly by her son, kissed repeatedly on her cheek and forehead. The wet, warm kisses no longer felt like thorns but like honey, melting through her skin and into her heart.

Even when she had doted on Qin Zishi and fulfilled all his requests, she had never felt such emotion and joy. So this was the bond of blood. So Qin Qing was truly the flesh of her flesh. Ji Lan was moved to tears. She had to bury her head in her son’s shoulder to wipe them away. She was so glad she had taken this step. It was wonderful. Qin Qing felt the warmth on his shoulder. He looked down at Ji Lan’s hair and gently patted her back. A warmth stirred in his heart, something the original owner had never experienced. He had given up too soon. Xu Yizhi stood nearby, quietly waiting. His gaze never left Qin Qing. This joy, this emotion, this countless warmth were all things he couldn’t understand. But through Qin Qing’s gentle, bright smile, he could tell that what was happening was beautiful.

996 jumped into the sports car, sat in the driver’s seat, put its chubby paws on the steering wheel, and said excitedly, “Meow, this car is so cool. Qin Qing, can I drive it?”

“Can you reach the pedals?” Qin Qing asked in his mind.

996: “Damn it. If you can’t say anything nice, shut up.”

996 turned to fiddle with the pink bow tied to the rearview mirror. Its peripheral vision caught a figure. It was Qin Zishi. He stood in the crowd, his face pale, staring at them with jealous hatred. He couldn’t believe that Ji Lan, who had just treated him like a beloved son yesterday, could pour all her love onto Qin Qing so quickly. She was trembling with satisfaction. This experience would surely be unforgettable. Perhaps from now on, doting on Qin Qing would become a habit she couldn’t break. How amazing. How did Qin Qing do it? Qin Zishi clenched his fists, screaming and raging inside.

Meanwhile, 996 was also marveling at how amazing Qin Qing was. Why did the original owner, cycle after cycle, fail to get the things Qin Qing had so easily grasped? He didn’t even have to try. People would offer him their genuine devotion. 996 clenched its little fist and punched the steering wheel. Damn it, if Qin Qing would just follow the plot, it would be driving a Maserati by the end of the year. The feeling of being watched made Qin Qing turn around. Qin Zishi’s sinister gaze met his gentle one in the air. The next second, Qin Zishi turned and fled. What he had just witnessed would surely become his nightmare tonight. The fear of being abandoned by everyone and losing everything was like the end of the world. Qin Qing looked away and gently put his arm around Ji Lan’s shoulder, guiding her into the sports car.

“Mom, I’ll take you home.” He smiled.

“Okay. Drive slowly. Let’s go for a ride.” Ji Lan laughed like a child.

“Let’s pick up Grandfather along the way.” Qin Qing suggested.

Ji Lan nodded quickly, laughing nonstop. Her silly demeanor completely lost the elegant, dignified composure of a lady. So this was the joy of family. Why had she never felt it before?

Qin Qing looked at Xu Yizhi. Xu Yizhi immediately put the folders in the trunk and smiled, “Have fun.”

“Thank you, President Xu.” Qin Qing smiled, sat in the driver’s seat, patted the steering wheel, and suddenly said, “President Xu, now this is a gift.”

Before Xu Yizhi could react, the silver-gray sports car had already sped away, leaving only a cloud of exhaust. Xu Yizhi stood there for a moment, then burst into joyful laughter. The little flower, pushed too far, had finally shown its thorns. But they were soft and didn’t hurt. In his office, reviewing documents, Cang Ming suddenly looked up, clutching his heart with a frown. What was this feeling- wanting to be angry and laugh at the same time, with an itch in the heart?
