Ogiwara was sleeping, leaning against the wall by the bed. It seemed like he had been in the middle of cleaning something, as a sleek, black camera was resting on his lap at an angle. Even as Minato peered over, there was no sign of him waking up.
It felt like Minato was witnessing something rare. After all, even when he was hospitalized for surgery ten years ago, Minato barely saw Ogiwara sleeping.
His long lashes cast a shadow over his sharp eyes. His smooth, well-shaped cheeks seemed a little more hollow compared to ten years ago. The line of his nose and lips hadn’t changed, but now they carried a color they didn’t have back then.
Minato couldn’t help but think again how beautiful he was. It wasn’t just because his features were well-defined, but because of his unique expression.
His brother had said he was wilful. That was true—Ogiwara had a part of him that didn’t listen to others. However, he also had the strength to see the direction he was heading in and move forward.
It was in those moments, when he showed occasional childish selfishness or dependence, that Minato found himself drowning in those feelings. Even if it was only for a short time or for atonement, being close to him was something Minato cherished.
―――I wish things could have stayed like that summer.
Minato smiled bitterly at the thought that fell quietly into his chest. He carefully lifted the camera off Ogiwara’s long legs. After placing it gently on the nearby table, he draped a spare blanket from the closet over Ogiwara. He seemed to be sleeping soundly, and there was no sign that he would wake up.
After changing from his suit into casual clothes, Minato’s phone vibrated. Minato felt relieved when he checked the silent notification, thanks to the phone being on silent mode, and saw a message from Nagashima:
Eisuke: Still awake?
In such a short time, Minato thought a quiet conversation would be fine. So, he selected his friend’s number from the contact list. Pressing the call button and holding the phone to his ear, he glanced toward the back of the room, where Ogiwara was still sound asleep. When he moved to the hallway just in case, the ringtone cut off, almost as if the other person had been waiting for Minato to call.
“Minato? Finally got through.”
The scolding tone was a cover for concern. Sensing his worry, Minato apologized, and on the other end of the call, Nagashima mumbled an excuse.
“Well, if nothing’s wrong, then it’s fine. But work is important, sure. But you should take care of yourself and rest properly.”
From that single comment, Minato could tell that Koumoto had probably passed on the message.
Minato suddenly felt grateful for that. Both Koumoto and Nagashima cared about him like this.
The softening of his feelings moved to his face, and it came out in his voice. Even Minato was surprised at how calm his voice sounded.
“Sorry for making you worry. Thanks, as always. I really appreciate it.”
“Geez… save lines like that for your deathbed.”
“That’s not the right usage of that expression.”
“You’re going to correct me on that? You really are a tutor.”
They both chuckled at the end of the call, and he ended it with a smile. Minato tiptoed back to the back of the room. After making sure Ogiwara was still asleep, he spread out the work he had brought home on his desk.
About an hour later, he decided he’d made enough progress and decided to finish up for the night. As he stood up to prepare for a bath, he was suddenly pulled from behind.
“…You woke up. Have you had dinner?”
“I had it on my way back from work. Ended up having a drinking session too.”
“In that case, you came by train or taxi today?”
Minato asked, wondering if Ogiwara had really driven here. The moment he wrapped his arms around Minato from behind, he rested his chin on his shoulder, and even when Minato turned his head, he couldn’t see his expression.
“By train, and then I walked. This place is nice, with the station being so close. —But you got home pretty late, sensei. Where did you go?”
“I had dinner with a friend who invited me. I didn’t have any alcohol, though.”
Minato wasn’t particularly fond of alcohol, and when he was with Koumoto, they usually wouldn’t order any drinks. So, even when they talked late into the night, their meals typically ended with food and tea.
“Who’s the friend?”
“He’s someone you don’t know.”
“…I see.”
The arm around his waist tightened. Minato was pressed firmly against the back of the chair and was turned to face Ogiwara.
Despite the evident irritation on Ogiwara’s face as he kissed Minato roughly, the warmth from their intertwined bodies was somehow gentle and sweet. Minato didn’t resist, letting Ogiwara do as he pleased. Then, Ogiwara’s hand that was gripping his chin slid down his throat and traced along his ear, teasing his earlobe with his long fingers. Even though Minato was already sensitive in that area, the sensation made heat pool beneath his skin.
When the long kiss finally broke off, Ogiwara began to nibble at his throat and nape. Even though he should have been used to it by now, the overly sensitive skin still reacted, and Minato found himself at a loss for what to do. With nimble fingers, Ogiwara pulled up the hem of Minato’s loungewear. Minato let out a breath at the thought that they might continue tonight, and Ogiwara whispered as he kissed behind his ear.
“Minato-sensei, you’re off tomorrow, right? I have the day off too. So if you’re free, would you like to go out together?”
“…Go out?”
Minato looked up in surprise at the unexpected invitation. Ogiwara, who had been so close, now pressed his face against Minato’s, their cheeks touching.
“Yes. If there’s anywhere you want to go, I’ll go with you.”
“It might not be very interesting for you, though.”
Come to think of it, how did Ogiwara spend his free time? They always met at night, by chance, and would sleep together in this room. Depending on the situation, Ogiwara either went home or stayed over. Minato only knew this side of him.
“I won’t know until we go, right? And even if it’s not interesting…-” Ogiwara started to speak but hesitated, swallowing the words halfway. He then stared at Minato intently.
“What?” Minato, curious, urged him to continue, but Ogiwara silenced him with a kiss, cutting off the conversation.
The palm that had been obediently still during the conversation began to move under the robe. It explored the protrusion at the chest, pinching and crushing the tip with the fingertips. Each time, the gradually building sensation became sharper, as if intentionally stimulated by the tips of the nails.
Kisses fell from the lips to the cheek, the jaw, and the throat. Ahead of his feelings, the strength drained from Minato’s familiar body. Before that happened, Minato grasped Ogiwara’s hand to stop him.
“Wait, I haven’t showered yet…”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“No, it’s not okay. I’ll take a quick shower, so wait until then.”
In the past ten days, Minato had learned that Ogiwara had a habit of kissing all over his skin. Considering that, Minato could not possibly accept Ogiwara’s argument.
…Minato wanted to be even a little bit well-liked by Ogiwara. Knowing he was not particularly favored made him even more unwilling to compromise.
“It’s not necessary. Minato-sensei doesn’t seem to sweat much.”
“That can’t be true. Just move away. I’ll be quick, alright?”
Minato intentionally spoke firmly, as he would not give in on this. Ignoring the sigh heard near his ear, he pushed away the long arm, and a dissatisfied voice spoke.
“Can I join you? If so, I’ll let you go.”
“If that’s what you want to do, you should ask your girlfriend.”
“…Alright, five minutes then. I won’t wait any longer than that.”
Minato was sure Ogiwara was making a rather sullen face right now. Knowing that from the tone alone, he did not turn back and slipped out of the loosened embrace, heading towards the bathroom.
Due to Ogiwara’s strong wish, Minato had stopped using honorifics with him. On the surface, it was as if they had returned to their relationship from ten years ago, and Minato would take any opportunity to draw a clear line between them.
The calm was just an illusion. Like a cardboard backdrop used in an elementary school performance, it could easily be broken with just a slight push. They both knew this, which is why they were deliberately playing the roles of tutor and student.
The result of a tug-of-war between convenience and reason, this was a temporary arrangement. To Ogiwara, Minato was merely a distraction, while he had a proper romantic partner elsewhere. Minato had to constantly keep this in mind, or the one who would end up damaged would be himself.
While showering from head to toe in the bathroom, Minato drove stakes into the feelings that threatened to tilt.
If he didn’t, he would end up leaning towards Ogiwara and tumbling down.
