The reason he let Ogiwara do as he pleased was simple: Minato himself enjoyed spending time with him. To be honest, Minato had developed feelings for this high school boy, five years his junior, that bordered on affection.

…Minato had realized shortly after entering university that he was probably attracted to men. Throughout middle and high school, he had never stood out much and had no connections with girls, but he didn’t mind because he simply wasn’t interested.

It all began when he joined a club shortly after starting university and developed feelings akin to admiration for an upperclassman. He started frequenting the club room just to see him, and his heart would race whenever the senior spoke to him. But then, one day, he saw a beautiful woman standing beside the senior, calling him by his name in a familiar way.

The despair that struck him in that moment taught Minato that what he had experienced was heartbreak. It was Eisuke, the person he had just been talking to on the phone, who explained this to him. Eisuke, too, was like Minato—unable to find interest in women.

However, unlike Minato, Eisuke always had a string of lovers. Perhaps that was why Eisuke seemed concerned about how Minato had completely shut himself off from romance after that heartbreak.

As the streetlights flickered on, Ogiwara walked beside him. Despite his long stride, his pace was deliberately slow, clearly adjusted to Minato’s. When Ogiwara was alone, he walked briskly. This was a sign of the subtle, unspoken consideration Ogiwara often showed, something Minato couldn’t bring himself to reject.

“Is it alright if I ask now? Why do you bother with me, Ogiwara?”

It wasn’t a jab, but a question born of genuine curiosity.

Minato didn’t believe Ogiwara was genuinely attached to him. A high school boy as striking as Ogiwara couldn’t possibly find someone like Minato—an unremarkable man—in any way attractive.

After tomorrow’s research lesson, their schedules would diverge, and this would be the last chance to speak without concern for others overhearing. If he was going to ask directly, it had to be now.

Perhaps taken aback by the sudden question, Ogiwara furrowed his eyebrows and fixed Minato with a piercing gaze.

“Why are you asking this all of a sudden?”

“It’s not sudden. I’ve been wondering from the start.”

Their relationship would naturally end when the internship concluded. Whether it was a fleeting whim or a novelty for Ogiwara, it wouldn’t erase the fun they’d had together. That was enough for Minato.

Even though Ogiwara seemed mature for his age, he was still just a seventeen-year-old high school student. Adding the complication of them both being men, it was obvious that Minato’s feelings would never be reciprocated.

That was precisely why Minato wanted clarity now. To bring closure to his feelings at this moment, in this place.

As they walked through the brightly lit train station and climbed the stairs past the ticket gates, Ogiwara remained silent. It wasn’t until they stepped onto the platform that he finally spoke.

“It’s because I enjoy being with you. You’re interesting and never boring.”

“…Isn’t that the opposite? My nickname is ‘potted plant,’ you know.”

“Does that mean people find you calming to be around?”

“No, it means they wouldn’t notice whether I was there or not, and that I’m boring to be with.”

Minato was plain, unremarkable, not great with words, and incapable of saying anything clever. He could avoid disrupting the atmosphere at best, but that was it. Even when he was with Ogiwara, he only managed to respond to topics brought up, never initiating any new ones.

“How others feel doesn’t matter to me. I enjoy talking to you, and I feel comfortable when I’m with you. Isn’t that enough?”

Ogiwara leaned closer, his tall frame bent to meet Minato’s eye level. Startled, Minato instinctively shrank back, only to hear the soft sound of Ogiwara’s laughter. That’s when it hit him—Ogiwara enjoyed watching Minato’s awkward reactions.

“Ogiwara-kun, you’re surprisingly mean-spirited.”

“Thank you for the compliment. By the way, I really enjoy your classes, Hosokawa-sensei.”

The train arrived just as Ogiwara finished speaking, drowning out his words.

Through the noise, Ogiwara’s expression remained earnest as he looked at Minato. It was a rare expression, and it made Minato’s heart skip a beat.

With a gentle push from Ogiwara’s long arm, Minato found himself stepping into the train. Amid the crowded car, Ogiwara guided him to stand by the wall near the connecting doors.

“Your explanations are clear and concise, making them easy to understand. That’s what my classmates say, too. And I’ve noticed you discreetly helping those who struggle.”

“…”

Minato was shocked. This was something his supervising teacher had praised him for, but he never thought the students would notice. Ogiwara’s triumphant smile as he observed Minato’s stunned expression was almost infuriating.

“I’m sad your lessons are ending. If possible, I’d like you to come back after I graduate next year and teach senior science classes.”

It was the highest praise Minato had ever received. His cheeks warmed, and he looked down, too embarrassed to meet Ogiwara’s eyes.

“By the way, Sensei—”

Ogiwara’s words were cut off as the train suddenly jolted violently. The impact was so strong that Minato couldn’t keep his balance. He lost his grip on the handrail, his feet lifted off the floor, and his vision blurred as if in slow motion.

A child standing a few meters ahead of him stumbled as if pulled by an invisible force. Instinctively, Minato reached out and grabbed the child’s small shoulder, pulling them close. At that moment, Minato’s body was flung sideways.

He braced himself for impact, clenching his teeth against the inevitable collision. But instead of cold, hard metal, his body struck something firm yet yielding, sending shockwaves through his entire being.

“…What?”

A faint, panicked cry reached his ears. Still crouched, Minato lifted his head, realizing the train had stopped shaking.

The child in his arms met his gaze, eyes wide with fear and beginning to brim with tears. A trembling voice called for their mother, who arrived moments later, disheveled and bleeding slightly from her forehead. She hugged the child tightly, repeatedly thanking Minato through her tears.

As Minato took in the chaotic scene around him, he noticed many injured passengers. The floor of the train was tilted, and outside the window, they were nowhere near a station.

“…Sensei.”

A voice from behind startled him. Turning, he froze.

Ogiwara was leaning against the wall, sitting on the slanted floor with a pale face and clutching his head. His expression twisted in pain as he struggled to stand, only to falter.

“Ogiwara-kun! Are you hurt? Where are you injured?”

“…I’m fine. Rescue will come soon. You should calm down. What about you, Sensei? Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, I—”

Minato’s breath caught. In that moment, he remembered the sensation from earlier. When he had collided with Ogiwara.

He realized then: ―――the reason he was unharmed was because Ogiwara had shielded him.

From inside the car, a voice calling for help could be heard. A voice, presumably reporting the situation via cell phone, quickly grew distant.

“…ah.”

Ogiwara exhaled heavily, gasping as if struggling to breathe, and clutched his right knee, as though trying to endure the pain. Seeing his actions and expression made Minato’s entire body grow cold.
