Chapter 30: Car Accident

These two short words made Zhou Zizheng’s brow twitch. She had finally arrived, and everything was about to end.

Zhou Zizheng came downstairs to the company entrance and saw a suspicious white sedan. The driver’s window was half-open, and a slender wrist extended from inside.

He pressed his lips tight and walked closer. When he reached the car, he tapped on the window. Xu Laizi’s face appeared. She didn’t hide it; instead, she smiled openly at Zhou Zizheng: “Sure enough, only Zhouzhou can make you lose your composure.”

She said, “I should have been ruthless and done this sooner.”

Zhou Zizheng glanced at the empty passenger seat, then subconsciously looked at the trunk, thinking, She wouldn’t be so monstrous as to go that far, would she? But without seeing him, he couldn’t relax: “So, where is he?”

Following his gaze, Xu Laizi scoffed, “I would only hurt myself, not Zhouzhou. He’s fine, just a little sleepy.”

Zhou Zizheng: “…”

To describe giving him a sleeping pill so euphemistically, she really was something else.

Xu Laizi pushed the car door open and got out, naturally yielding the driver’s seat to him: “You drive; I’m a little tired.”

Zhou Zizheng didn’t hesitate, sat down, fastened his seatbelt, and waited until she was in the passenger seat before saying flatly, “You don’t need to go to all this trouble. If you just want to talk, I’m happy to oblige. But if you drag Zhouzhou into this, aren’t you afraid I’ll drag you down with me?”

“Heh…” Xu Laizi said, “I merely helped him make a choice. Do you really think he could completely ignore me forever? Or did you want him to remain trapped in anxiety?”

Zhou Zizheng was uncharacteristically silenced by her. Xu Laizi continued coolly, “Zhou Zizheng, my love for Zhouzhou is not much different from yours. It’s just that you were lucky enough to be the gender he likes.”

“If you were a girl, I’d be confident I could snatch him back from you.”

The car slowly started and drove into the traffic.

Zhou Zizheng gave a knowing smile: “You are indeed very confident, but you’re wrong. Regardless of whether I’m male or female, human or monster, Yu Haozhou sees my inner core, which has nothing to do with my appearance. Understand?”

“…You’re truly shameless.” Xu Laizi cursed unceremoniously.

Zhou Zizheng smoothly replied, “Thank you for the compliment.”

The atmosphere fell silent. Xu Laizi suddenly sneered, “If I hadn’t come here on a mission of revenge this time, I’d actually like to keep chatting with you like this. It’s quite entertaining.”

The atmosphere between them did feel a bit too relaxed, less like they were resolving an issue and more like they were going on a trip.

Zhou Zizheng gripped the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road ahead: “How do you want to resolve this?”

“A life for a life.”

Xu Laizi said these four words very calmly, then looked at Zhou Zizheng. His expression was surprisingly placid, as if he had long since guessed this answer.

This made her wary. Had he left behind any safeguards?

Zhou Zizheng was only putting on a calm front. He was afraid of provoking her into attacking him right there in the car. He truly hadn’t expected this woman to be so crazy: “Is there no other solution?”

He was stalling for time. And starting to check the roadside for temporary parking spots.

“What do you think?”

As soon as she finished speaking, Xu Laizi’s expression turned ferocious. She suddenly pulled out the dagger she had hidden in her bag from the start and lunged at Zhou Zizheng’s abdomen.

Zhou Zizheng only saw a flash of silver light.

He saw part of her movement in the rearview mirror and, having anticipated this somewhat, raised his arm to block the blow. It didn’t pierce his abdomen, but the sharp dagger tore through his layers of clothing, leaving a wound on his arm. Bright red blood was gushing out.

“Are you insane?!” Zhou Zizheng’s brows twitched furiously. In that moment, adrenaline surged, and he didn’t feel any pain, only the desperate need to find a way to escape.

Because he was only using one hand to control the steering wheel, the car swerved awkwardly, even cutting off other cars on the road, whose horns blared wildly.

“I am insane! Wouldn’t you be insane too if you were me?!” Xu Laizi seemed to have a sudden breakdown, her eyes bulging out. “If you had seen your parents jump from the 32nd floor right in front of you, falling and turning into a bloody mess, you’d be crazier than me!”

While speaking, Xu Laizi didn’t stop her attack. Zhou Zizheng had to control the car while simultaneously preventing her from stabbing him in vital areas. He already had several more cuts on his body.

He was dripping with cold sweat. Any more delay, and he might die from excessive blood loss. Zhou Zizheng spotted a deserted roadside flowerbed not far ahead. As if having made a firm decision, he slammed the gas pedal, dodging the cars in front, and drove straight toward the flowerbed.

Xu Laizi was completely oblivious to his actions.

“I hate you! I hate all of you!” Xu Laizi cried, stabbing repeatedly. “If your Xie family hadn’t driven my parents to a dead end, how else would I have suffered all this? So, go to hell!”

Xu Laizi gripped the dagger, raising both hands, the tip aimed at the man’s heart.

Zhou Zizheng kept his eyes fixed ahead, both hands controlling the steering wheel. Enduring the intense pain, he floored the gas. The moment before the knife tip touched his heart, the car crashed with a loud “boom.” The airbags deployed, and the force immediately knocked both of them unconscious.

The front of the car was completely shattered, and the body was twisted and deformed.

“Oh my god! Quick, call the police! Call 120! There are two people inside; they’re stuck and can’t be pulled out.”

“Quickly, send more people to pry open the car doors! The oil’s leaking; if the car catches fire, we’re doomed!”

In the lounge, Yu Haozhou suddenly opened his eyes. He didn’t know why, but his heart was suddenly pounding fast.

He rubbed his temples, first generally scanning the surrounding environment, and then recalled the events before he lost consciousness. Midway through the memory, everything came back to him.

Xu Laizi had gotten some kind of drug and had secretly drugged him. Now… damn it, Zhou Zizheng was in trouble.

He had just found his cell phone and was about to make a call.

He saw that he already had over a hundred missed calls: from Zhou Zizheng, his own parents, Zhou Zizheng’s parents, and even Han Jin. A very bad feeling suddenly rose in his heart.

He gave Han Jin a call as he walked out.

The door opened, and two waiters standing outside were startled. Before they could say a word, Yu Haozhou gave them a sharp look and quickly walked out of the coffee shop.

“Oh my ancestor, you finally answered the phone,” Han Jin complained as soon as he picked up. “Where are you now? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” Yu Haozhou’s hand gripping the phone was shaking. He stood by the roadside and hailed a passing car. “Did something happen to Zhou Zizheng?”

“…Yes, please come to Central Hospital quickly.” Han Jin said, “Chengcheng heard about his car accident and was so anxious that she went into premature labor. She’s still in the operating room and hasn’t come out. Your parents and his parents are all here. The elders are quite distressed; you need to come and comfort them quickly.”

The hospital was a complete mess.

When Yu Haozhou rushed over, Kang Lanxiang spotted him immediately. Her eyes were already red and filled with suppressed tears. Seeing her son, she couldn’t help herself. She hugged him, sobbing quietly and restrainedly: “Where did you run off to? Why are you only coming now? You wouldn’t answer your calls. What were you doing?”

The incident had happened so suddenly.

None of the elders knew that Yu Haozhou had been out of contact earlier. Han Jin, the only one who knew, was preoccupied with staying by Cheng Qianyu’s side and couldn’t spare the attention.

Therefore, the elders still thought that Zhou Zizheng had simply been in a very serious car accident.

Yu Haozhou patted Kang Lanxiang’s back: “I’m sorry, Mom, I was delayed by something. What did the doctor say? How long has he been in?”

Yu Xiang sighed beside them: “He was already in the operating room when we arrived. His parents said he was covered in blood when he came in. We don’t know the specific situation; we have to wait for the doctor to come out.”

What exactly did Xu Laizi do?

Yu Haozhou desperately wanted to grab her and question her right now. What hatred, what grievance could lead her to deliberately scheme against Zhou Zizheng like this? Their years of friendship felt like a joke; he hadn’t been able to help at all.

Mrs. Xie was sitting on a chair in the hallway, leaning on Mr. Xie’s shoulder.

Her face was so pale and exhausted that she looked ready to faint at any moment. Only the slim hope of good news about her son was bolstering her will. Yu Haozhou pursed his lips, knelt down, and squeezed her hand: “Mom, I…”

Mrs. Xie squeezed his hand, fighting back tears: “Child, I’m sorry. This is all our fault. The evil we created…”

Mrs. Xie painfully pounded her chest: “If heaven wants to punish someone, punish the two of us! Why must my son bear all the suffering?”

Yu Haozhou vaguely felt that Mrs. Xie and the others might know the full details, but clearly, this was not a good time to ask.

It must be said that after Yu Haozhou arrived, the four elders immediately found a pillar of strength. As long as Yu Haozhou wasn’t panicking, they could hold themselves together.

In truth, Yu Haozhou himself wished he could rush into the operating room.

After about an hour, Han Jin, from the maternity department, took a moment to come and check the situation. He didn’t feel it was appropriate to share the happy news of having a daughter at that moment.

It was Yu Haozhou who asked first, so he told him.

Kang Lanxiang then said that once the situation here stabilized, they would definitely go to offer congratulations. Han Jin quickly said there was no rush.

Then Yu Haozhou pulled Han Jin to a slightly further distance, frowning as he asked him, “Do you know what happened?”

Han Jin scratched his messy hair: “I don’t know the specifics very clearly, but it definitely has something to do with Xu Laizi. She was brought in with Brother Zhou. She’s not as seriously hurt as he is. I just went to check; she’s awake, but she refuses to say anything.”

Yu Haozhou looked at his parents, who were still anxiously waiting over there, and then looked at the direction of the operating room. He was very conflicted. He knew Xu Laizi was waiting for him, but he was also afraid that if Zhou Zizheng woke up later and didn’t see him, he would be sad…

Gritting his teeth, he said, “Could you cover for me here, please? Call me immediately when Zhou Zizheng comes out.”

“No problem, go ahead.” Anyway, Cheng Qianyu had his parents and the nanny, so he didn’t really need to worry about her.

Xu Laizi’s ward was on the floor above, a standard room.

She had no serious injuries, just some scrapes on her arms and calves and a minor bruise on her forehead. But her body was inexplicably covered in a lot of blood. As soon as Yu Haozhou saw her, it was difficult for him to pretend that nothing had happened. His face cold, he walked up to the bedside and didn’t even sit down: “Can you talk now?”
