Hua Zhao stood before her, just looking at her, not responding. Fang Qin saw mockery and ridicule in her eyes. Her emotions were like boiling water, steaming and scalding, burning her face red. Thinking back to when she was with Pei Ye, she had disliked how straight-laced he was. Forget romance, he couldn’t even say a single sweet word. No matter how handsome he was, after a while, she found him boring.
Pei Ye was a workaholic. When the company was just starting, he was so busy his feet barely touched the ground. Fang Qin liked a stimulating, fresh life. Clearly, Pei Ye couldn’t satisfy her. Her life was brilliant and beautiful. Pei Ye didn’t understand her paintings, nor did he understand what she wanted.
After Pei Xu was born, their life together didn’t move in a better direction. It became more and more flavorless. After giving birth, Fang Qin’s figure changed. Pei Ye hired a confinement nanny and a postpartum recovery specialist to take care of her at home, so she didn’t have to do anything. One day, seeing Pei Xu lying on her chest, biting her nipple and drinking milk, Fang Qin’s emotions suddenly exploded.
When the confinement nanny heard the baby’s crying and rushed in, little Pei Qiqi, who had just been drinking milk obediently, was flipped over on the bed, his head pressed underneath him, his newborn body twisted on the bed.
Seeing the nanny rush in without knocking, Fang Qin screamed, “Get out, all of you get out!”
The nanny, her heart aching, picked up the baby from the bed, placed him in the crook of her arm, and gently rocked him while mixing formula with one hand. The newborn Qiqi seemed to sense his mother’s rejection of breastfeeding him. After that day, he drank formula and didn’t cry or fuss for his mother to feed him.
Before Pei Qiqi was half a year old, his mom and dad were always arguing. Although he couldn’t remember it clearly, he always didn’t dare to get close to his mother. Fang Qin didn’t breastfeed, and Pei Ye had no objection. He had done a lot of research and asked the doctor. The doctor said Fang Qin might have some postpartum depression. Pei Ye wasn’t good with words and didn’t know how to comfort his wife, so he took two months off to stay with her and Qiqi, and hired two more aunties to take care of her. Fang Qin still felt unhappy and wouldn’t hold the child either.
When Qiqi learned to crawl, he saw his mother sitting on the balcony painting, and babbled as he crawled over, his little hand on his mother’s foot. He looked up at his mother, smiling and drooling. Fang Qin held her paintbrush, looked down at him, and told him, disgustedly, to go away. How could a tiny infant understand his mother’s words, or see the disgust in his mother’s eyes? He still smiled happily, tilted his head, babbled, and patted his little hand hard on his mother’s foot.
Fang Qin kicked him away, fiercely. “So annoying.”
In his office, Pei Ye saw this scene on the monitor. His mood went from shock to anger. That evening, Fang Qin had just come back from yoga class and saw Pei Ye looking at the painting she hadn’t finished during the day.
“You can’t even understand it. What are you pretending for?”
Facing her sarcasm, Pei Ye ignored it. He shoved the video on his phone in front of her and demanded to know why she had kicked Qiqi.
Fang Qin panicked a little, but quickly steadied herself. “Because of him, my figure is ruined, and my organs are all messed up. What right do you have to make me like the culprit who made me not myself anymore!”
Pei Ye shook his head in disbelief, and for a moment didn’t know what to say. The childcare nanny and the two aunties said behind her back that she was making a fuss, that they had never seen a woman make such a fuss. The man had a good career and cared for the family, spent money on her without blinking, and the child was fair, chubby, well-behaved, and adorable. Yet she turned the house upside down.
Before Pei Qiqi was one year old, he was taken care of by the childcare nanny and the aunties. Fang Qin had held him only a handful of times. Every time she saw the stretch marks on her body that wouldn’t fade, her hatred for Pei Xu grew a bit more. Later, her body recovered to its pre-pregnancy state, and the stretch marks were gone. Only then did her attitude toward Pei Xu improve slightly.
By the time Pei Xu was one, he could already talk. His first sentence was, “Dad.”
His second sentence was, “Hungry.”
For a while, Fang Qin was obsessed with making him learn to say “Mom.” Pei Qiqi shook his head and refused to learn. He wouldn’t call her Mom either. Fang Qin poked his forehead hard and called him an ungrateful little wretch.
Pei Qiqi didn’t understand what his mother was scolding him for. He ran under the security camera, tilted his little head up, and shouted loudly, “Dad, Dad.”
Pei Ye talked to her many times, telling her to be nicer to Qiqi. Children were very sensitive to their parents’ emotions, and he could feel that his mother didn’t like him. Pei Qiqi actually liked his mother very much. Every time his mother went out for several days, he would miss her, and when she came back, he couldn’t help but rush over and hug her.
…
If, if Pei Ye were still here, at least her money wouldn’t have been cut off. She hadn’t seen Cen Zheping for many days. She heard he had finally gotten a job and gone to join a film crew. Before he left, he hadn’t even called her. The money in her card wasn’t enough for her anymore. Only then did she think of Pei Ye. Pei Ye was a person who always left a way out. He must have left property for Pei Xu.
After she had someone investigate, sure enough, she found that Pei Xu had a large flat of nearly 400 square meters under his name. P City was a first-tier city. Housing prices in the city center were very high. If the house were sold, it would definitely fetch several million.
She also searched online. Pei Xu was very popular now. Many businesses said they wanted him for commercials, and several agencies were fighting to sign him. If she could coax Pei Xu back, would she still have to worry about money? Seeing Fang Qin sitting there in a daze, smiling to herself, her expression changing again and again, Hua Zhao shouted, “Hey!” loudly. Fang Qin came back to her senses from her fantasy and felt that her plan just now was truly brilliant.
“Pei Xu is my son. I’m taking him with me today.”
The moment he heard this woman say Qiqi’s name, Pei Yi couldn’t stay calm.
He was genuinely curious about how this woman’s brain worked. “How do you have the nerve to say such a thing? And besides, Qiqi’s house was bought by my brother. You can’t take it even if you want to.”
Hua Zhao didn’t give Fang Qin a chance to retort. “Fang Qin, your previous behavior already constitutes the crime of abandonment. We’ve already gathered the evidence and can sue you at any time.
We haven’t come to settle accounts with you for the harm you did to Qiqi, and yet you have the nerve to come to our door and delusionally try to snatch what his father left him.”
“What do you mean his things? They’re my things too. I haven’t divorced his father, and he bought it with marital joint property!” Fang Qin shouted.
Pei Yi couldn’t hold back anymore. “Fine, you say marital joint property, right? Then let me ask you, as the heir to my brother’s estate, where did Qiqi’s portion of the inheritance go?”
Fang Qin was stammering from his shout. “What inheritance? Pei Ye died suddenly. How would I know what inheritance there was?”
“Bullshit. Don’t think I don’t know you sold all of my brother’s properties and his company.”
“In order to marry Cen Zheping, just days after my brother died, you abandoned Qiqi in that kind of place.
If I hadn’t come back, who knows what Qiqi would have become. Fang Qin, do you have a conscience, huh?”
Author’s Tip: When one spouse dies, the marriage relationship is automatically dissolved, and the surviving spouse returns to being single.
