No matter how Cen Zheping pleaded, the principal wouldn’t change her mind. Finally, Cen Zheping left the office, running through the famous kindergartens in Beicheng in his mind. The two walked a bit. Cen Zheping turned, saying he’d pick up Cen Yuankai, telling Fang Qin to wait in the car.
The commotion was loud. Classes near the office were taken to activity rooms. Many onlookers whispered at the sight of Fang Qin. The corridor was long. Fang Qin walked past the whisperers with her back straight. They looked at her, discussed her, sized her up. Fang Qin felt the air freeze. Their gazes were like invisible hands tearing her dignity.
She clutched her bag, knuckles white. The indistinct whispers chilled her spine, like vines choking her. Calm. Stay calm. Don’t regret. In such situations, she must maintain her poise and dignity. Just a kindergarten. What’s the big deal? Itβs just a transfer. The whispers faded.
She walked to the first-floor entrance. The activity room ahead echoed with children’s laughter. The room was covered with soft colorful carpet. Children sat in a large circle. Their faces were flushed, eyes shining with excitement. A little girl held a flowered handkerchief, running carefully around the circle. Her steps were light and sneaky. She scanned and dropped the handkerchief behind a child. She ran. The chosen boy noticed and chased.
“Go, Brother Qiqi!”
“Qiqi, run!”
Fang Qin stopped abruptly, looking in. The activity room was filled with laughter. The boy with the handkerchief ran fast, catching the girl in a few steps.
“Brother Qiqi wins!” a child jumped up.
The girl was nervous, stumbling. Pei Qiqi’s eyes moved. His hand, reaching for the girl, stopped in the air. Hesitating, the girl sat in his spot.
“Pfft, Qiqi is such a little gentleman. He could have caught her but let Xiaoxiao off. So good,” Teacher Apple laughed.
The co-teacher nodded. “He’s really good. When I first heard his uncle say he was sick, I was worried.”
A teacher on duty came over. “Sick?”
Qiqi’s illness wasn’t a secret. Pei Yi and Hua Zhao told the teachers when he enrolled, hoping they’d care for him.
Teacher Apple nodded. “Remember that child abuse kindergarten news?”
“Qiqi went there…”
The closed full-time kindergarten’s teachers were all involved in child abuse. After parents exposed it, they were sentenced to several yeays in prison. But the damage to the children was irreversible.
The teachers were heartbroken. “How could such a kindergarten exist? Qiqi is so pitiful. Where are his parents?”
The co-teacher and Teacher Apple didn’t know the privacy. They shook their heads. They looked at Qiqi with pity. It was Pei Qiqi’s turn to drop the handkerchief. He was like a little adult, stern, quiet. He didn’t know who to give it to.
A pretty little guy in the circle raised his hands. “Brother Qiqi, give it to me!”
Su Youli pointed behind himself. Pei Qiqi blinked. Youyou wanted the handkerchief. He’d give it to him. The little guy got the handkerchief and sprang up, chasing with his short legs. The two enjoyed the chase, laughing as they ran.
Pei Qiqi looked back at Youyou, who was giggling with the handkerchief, and smiled.
They ran several laps. The children shouted, “Qiqi, sit down! Sit down!”
The teachers doubled over laughing. Teacher Apple looked up and saw a parent outside the window, staring intently at the children.
Teacher Apple went over, smiling. “Hello, is there something you need?”
The co-teacher glanced over. Unfamiliar face. Probably not their class. She ignored it. Teacher Apple asked several times. The parent didn’t respond.
“Parent?” Teacher Apple raised her voice.
The parent shuddered as if electrocuted, turning with an “Ah.”
“Can I help you?” Teacher Apple was patient.
Fang Qin came back to herself, hands numb, bag falling.
“Qiqi, Youyou, stop running! Sit down!” the co-teacher ran over, grabbing the two rule-breakers.
Feeling the gaze, Fang Qin crouched abruptly, hands shaking. Her body reacted before her mind. She didn’t know why she hid.
“Are you okay? Do you need help?” Teacher Apple picked up her bag.
Fang Qin smoothed her hair, forcing calm. “No, no, thank you.”
She walked away quickly, red coat dirty, back forlorn. Teacher Apple found her strange. Later, learning the office troublemaker had left, she took the children back.
In the car, Fang Qin trembled. Pei Xu. Pei Xu could get into Xingya. He was taken by Pei Yi. Was Pei Yi that rich? Cen Zheping said Xingya was the strictest. Even the Cen family struggled to get Cen Yuankai in. Pei Xu seemed taller, healthier, praised by teachers. Was he ever this good? Fang Qin’s head throbbed, images flashing. Pei Xu smiled happily, carefree, nothing like the dependent little wooden boy.
The car door opened. Cen Yuankai rolled his eyes, sitting beside her, pushing her. “Get away from me, bad woman.”
