PCMWF Chapter 185

Withdrawal from School

It was winter now. The old locust tree’s branches rustled in the cold wind. The car was stuck for five or six minutes. Passing the jam, Pei Yi craned his neck to look right. Two cars were parked by the kindergarten’s side door, doors open. A woman in a red coat stood by the car, coaxing a child. A man stood nearby, face dark. The couple was about to fight in front of the child. Security and teachers ran over to mediate. Many onlookers stood by. Pei Yi looked away, condemning the couple for fighting in front of their child.

After winter began, the children easily stayed in bed after naps. Su Youli sat obediently on his bed, put on his shoes, and went to the head of the bed to arrange his pillow. With the teacher’s help, the children got up. Some couldn’t dress themselves, their heads stuck in sleeves.

“Qiqi, Youyou, can you help the teacher?”

The two dressed little ones washed their faces. Hearing Teacher Apple call their names, they ran over. Lately, Teacher Apple often had them help other children with buttons. Over time, the two became the class’s little helpers. Several children told their parents that the new kids helped them dress. In a short time, the two became the most popular in Class 5.

The children were still dazed when they woke up, playing with toys at their desks. After naps, they went to the bathroom. Pei Qiqi held Youyou’s hand. The teacher waited at the door. In winter, the little guy wore more clothes, making pants harder to manage. Su Youli was a serious child. However Tang Dou dressed him in the morning, he had to replicate.

Thermal pants tucked into thermal shirt, outer pants into sweater. When crouching, if the thermal pants peeking out of socks showed, he’d crouch and slowly tuck them back. This process made bathroom time very long. Pei Qiqi knew he was slow and didn’t rush him. Occasionally, seeing other children return to class, he’d knock on the door.

He frowned. “Youyou, are you pooping?”

The little guy, dressed heavily, struggled to bend. His voice was muffled. “Brother Qiqi, I’m not pooping. I’m putting on my pants.”

Celebrating: after two weeks of kindergarten, Su Youli had learned to use “I.”

A major milestone in self-awareness. Suddenly, a crash from the bathroom entrance. Loud, followed by shouting.

The little guy, pants not tucked, pushed the door open, scared. “Brother Qiqi.”

Pei Qiqi hugged him, covering his ears. The two quickly found the teacher, were soothed, and taken back to class. Class 5’s floor connected to the teachers’ office. Hearing the fight, the teachers quickly took the children to the classroom.

“What’s going on?” Teacher Apple soothed the children, playing songs to mask the noise.

The co-teacher shook her head. “I don’t know. Sounds like Teacher Hua.”

The argument grew louder. Classes next to the office were led out by teachers. Class 5 was restless, crowding around Teacher Apple, hugging her legs, faces scared. The two head teachers exchanged looks and decided to take the children to the play area. Leaving, a girl with pigtails was scared to tears by the noise. Teacher Apple picked her up, leading the children out quickly. The principal’s office was a mess. A teacup shattered, tea everywhere. People crowded the door. Two security guards stood grimly. If the principal hadn’t stopped them, the woman smashing things would have been dragged out.

“Kai Kai’s mom, please calm down. This is a kindergarten. It’s class time.”

Fang Qin dragged a stool, blocking the door. Her red coat was dirty.

She smoothed her hair, sneering. “Calm? How can I be calm? You’re expelling my son!”

Teacher Hua rubbed her hands. “Kai Kai’s mom, it’s not expulsion. It’s a transfer. Kai Kai really isn’t suited for Xingya now…”

“Shut up!” Fang Qin stood, pointing at Teacher Hua. “You’re Kai Kai’s teacher. How can you be so biased? Kai Kai is just a bit naughty, and you want him expelled!”

She glared, grabbing a thermos from the desk and throwing it at Teacher Hua. Teacher Hua didn’t dodge. She took a breath, eyes red. Footsteps. A man pushed through the crowd into the office.

Fang Qin, seeing him, clung to him pitifully. “Honey, you’re finally here. These people are unreasonable.”

The mess made Cen Zheping’s temples throb. He pushed Fang Qin away, stepping over the shards.

“Sorry, sorry. My wife is impatient. She’s doing it for the child.”

Teacher Hua didn’t look at him, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. This family was unreasonable. Cen Yuankai bullied classmates and wouldn’t listen. Last week he pushed a child off the slide, dislocating his leg, injuring him. If he continued, it was a danger to the class. No parent wanted their child with an aggressive, naughty kid. Most of the class complained to her.

Teacher Hua tried transferring Cen Yuankai to other classes. He was sent back within days. Cen Yuankai was blacklisted by all teachers. No class would take him. She was wronged too. The school’s original opinion: Cen Yuankai had two semesters left. Educate him if possible. The school would never force a transfer unless absolutely necessary. If Cen Yuankai listened even a little, the school wouldn’t force him out. But he didn’t improve; he worsened. After the office scene, the principal and teachers lost their patience.

“Mr. Cen, Cen Yuankai has seriously disrupted the class. All the children have been bullied by him. We’ve tried many times with little effect. We can only advise you to transfer him.”

Cen Zheping’s face fell.
